Stegman has been dealing with glioblastoma for a few years and has been treated with chemotherapy and radiation, according to Rev. Thomas Massaro, S.J., who said he went to school with Stegman at the Western Jesuit School of Theology and later worked with him at BC. “He’s suffered a great deal,” said Massaro, a professor at Fordham University and former professor at the STM. “Yet he continues to soldier on … already exceeding the doctor’s expectations. And so it makes sense that he would be able to step down and take care of his health.”

A number of factors contribute to both the opportunities and obstacles Black women face headed into 2022, said Fordham University political scientist Christina Greer. Black women have long been qualified for political leadership but they increasingly have insisted on and gotten recognition for their ability, Greer said. Donors are increasingly betting on Black women for elected office, but “by and large, they still don’t get the benefit of the doubt from the donor class in the ways that White male candidates do,” she said.

Born in 1931, Ralph Thompson, in 1952, earned a doctor of law degree at Fordham University in New York, then had a stint as an officer in the US Air Force, mostly stationed in post-war Japan. He returned to Jamaica, married, and was involved in real estate development. And he painted and wrote poetry. He exhibited and gave readings. He was friends with the likes of St Lucian Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott, whose Trinidad Theatre Workshop he hosted in Jamaica in the 1970s. In the late 1970s, he took a higher degree in literature while living in Florida.
