The International Conference on Cyber Security (ICCS) brings together academics, law enforcement, and industry every 18 months to share information in an effort to combat cybercrime and promote data security. Jointly sponsored by Fordham and the FBI, the event, which began in 2009, draws prominent speakers as well as hundreds of guests.
This year, as the Fordham community waits for pandemic guidelines to safely allow in-person gatherings, organizers of the event are holding a series of virtual discussions by notable experts in the field. In a well-attended Jan. 28 Zoom talk, FBI Director Christopher Wray highlighted the interagency cooperation needed for the takedown of the Emotet criminal botnet.
The next panel, a Zoom webinar to be held on Tuesday, April 20, at 2 p.m., promises to be no less illuminating. Focusing on the infiltration of the credit scoring company Equifax by the Chinese military that exposed the personal information of at least 145 million individuals, “Crisis, Collaboration and China: The 2017 Cyber Attack on Equifax,” will feature speakers who helped investigate the crisis and bring the bad actors to justice.
Over the course of 76 days, the Chinese military methodically scrapped data from the company’s databases, resulting in an event that stands today as one of the most consequential cyberattacks in history. Jamil Farschi, chief information security officer at Equifax, will join Chad Hunt, supervisory special agent from FBI Atlanta Field Office, to discuss the anatomy of the attack and how the private company and the government agency collaborated in the aftermath of the attack to indict four members of the Chinese military.
After leading teams at some of the world’s most recognized brands, Farschi joined Equifax in 2018 and helped lead the transformation of the company’s security and technology in the aftermath of the devastating attack. Hunt, who has 17 years of investigative experience with the FBI, leads an investigative team that supports the FBI Cyber Division’s mission “to identify, pursue, and defeat adversaries.”
