SUMMARY:Remnants: Photographs of the Jewish Bronx by Julian Voloj
DESCRIPTION:The Ten Commandments in the façade of a supermarket\, a Star of David above the entrance of a Baptist church\, a Hebrew date in the cornerstone of an apartment building. Nearly two decades ago\, photographer and writer Julian Voloj started to create images of Jewish traces\, remnants of a once-thriving Jewish culture—not in Poland\, Ukraine\, or other countries that today are places of pilgrimage for American Jewish heritage tourists\, but in his adopted hometown of New York City\, home of the largest Jewish diaspora in the world. His fascination with formerly Jewish neighborhoods stems from his own upbringing growing up Jewish in Germany\, where he himself felt like a remnant of a once-thriving culture. \nThe exhibition at Fordham University will focus on sights in the Bronx and also include portraits from his series on New York Jewish identity and diversity. \nJulian Voloj is an award-winning writer and photographer. Born in Germany to Colombian parents\, his work has been featured in publications including The New York Times\, Washington Post\, and Rolling Stone\, as well as in other national and international publications\, such as El País\, Neue Zürcher Zeitung\, Frankfurter Allgemeine\, the Jerusalem Post\, and more.

How might you map your experiences onto your concept of leadership in this fast-paced\, ever-changing world? In this discussion\, we will explore how to build your own leadership narrative and showcase your skills to competitive fellowships like Schwarzman Scholars. SUMMARY:Rethinking Social\, Economic\, and Sustainable Practices to Foster Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:The impending doom of climate change has dominated global discourse in recent times. It revolves around finding a sustainable solution to the equitable dispensation of scarce natural resources. Cardozo School of Law\, clean energy law and policy expert

SUMMARY:Why Health Professions Need Fordham Students with Health Conditions and Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Disabilities are defined as health conditions that substantially impair bodily functions. Health professionals exert enormous influence over the lives of people with disabilities by providing health care\, and by generating research and information about them that forms the basis for policies and practices that affect their everyday lives. In this 20-minute talk followed by Q&A\, Nicholas D. Lawson\, M.D.\, J.D.\, will explain why the health professions need persons with health conditions and disabilities and need disability studies to make their policies and practices reflect the priorities of those purported to benefit from them. He will describe some of the professions’ existing barriers\, recent progress\, and invite audience questions and ideas at the end of the talk. \nLawson is a former psychiatry resident\, a person with a disability (dyslexia\, ADHD\, generalized anxiety disorder)\, and a disability advocate who serves as commissioner on the American Bar Association Commission on Disability Rights. He has written many articles on disability inclusion within the medical and legal professions and is a Georgetown Law scholar who will be teaching disability studies at Fordham for the first time this fall.

Istratii\, who was born in the Republic of Moldova and raised in Greece\, has more than 10 years of experience working as a decolonial international development researcher and practitioner to develop de-westernized\, faith-sensitive\, and culturally appropriate methods for researching and addressing gender issues and domestic violence in religious societies of Africa. SUMMARY:Catholic Discordance: Dialogue or Division
DESCRIPTION:Massimo Borghesi\, a moral philosopher at the University of Perugia\, has published Catholic Discordance: Neoconservatism vs. the Field Hospital Church of Pope Francis. The book is a history of the rise to prominence of conservatism in the U.S. Catholic Church. How will the U.S. church respond to Francis’ call for “synodality”—dialog of renewal and discernment among the whole of the people of God? Can the spirit of Vatican II be rekindled here? Can the social justice mission of the church be protected and renewed? Is the U.S. church\, like the polity\, headed for soft schism? \nWe invite you for a conversation with the author and theologian professor Massimo Faggioli (Villanova University)\, professor Michael Baur (Fordham University)\, and moral theologian Thomas Massaro\, S.J.\, (Fordham University). The panel will be moderated by George Conk\, senior fellow at Fordham’s Stein Center for Law and Ethics.

SUMMARY:The Quality of Mercy: Justice\, Forgiveness\, and Public Discourse—Debating Repentance and Redemption in an Era of “Cancel Culture”
DESCRIPTION:Critics across the political spectrum are decrying a new wave of censoriousness and intolerance in American society: a “cancel culture” that they say inhibits public discourse and development. But is the heart of the problem also spiritual and religious? Are we witnessing a kind of “neo-Puritanism” that has deep roots in U.S. culture? And can religious traditions point a way toward a solution? Can we recover the practices of repentance\, forgiveness\, and redemption that are central to the great spiritual teachings? \nThis panel of distinguished writers and scholars examines the state of America’s soul and remedies for our current predicament. \nPanelists \n\nThe Rev. Charles Howard is the University Chaplain at the University of Pennsylvania and a widely published writer who sees his vocation as working for “a communal increase in joy\, peace\, justice\, and love.”\nRabbi Danya Ruttenberg\, of the National Council of Jewish Women\, is an award-winning author whose latest book\, to be published in fall 2022\, is titled On Repentance and Repair: Making Amends in an Unapologetic World.\nStephen Pope is a professor of theology at Boston College and a popular speaker who teaches and writes regularly on issues of mercy and forgiveness.\n\nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate the discussion\, including questions from the online audience

SUMMARY:Continuing Education: Navigating Microaggressions Through the Lens of Clinicians of Color
DESCRIPTION:While social workers work to raise our collective voices of protest against blatant forms of racism in society\, we may be less sensitive to “the subtle\, cumulative mini-assault [that]is the substance of today’s racism” present in our profession. Microaggressions are often elusive and nuanced\, verbal and nonverbal acts that reflect the superiority\, hostility\, and discrimination of the dominant culture against a minority. They prove to be more insidious than overt forms of racism because they are easier to go unnamed and therefore\, invalidated. \nEspecially in the current political environment\, it is imperative that social workers increase our attunement and consciousness of microaggressions\, not only in society at large but also in our profession. This class will review ways in which racial microaggressions are experienced by and impact clinicians of color in a variety of settings. It seeks to illuminate a framework to understand clinicians’ disenfranchised experiences\, particularly in clinical environments that are susceptible to act as depositories of transference and countertransference. From the perspective of the professional experience of clinicians of color and a review of literature\, we will explore ways to forge critical awareness of the subject. The goals of the presentation are for participants to critically reflect on their practice\, become more informed and thereby support\, and ultimately create alliances with their peer clinicians of color. \nContinuing Education Hours Offered: 1.5
