SUMMARY:Sonic Icons: A Conversation with Sarah Bakker Kellogg and Ashley Purpura
DESCRIPTION:To the extent that Middle Eastern Christians register in Euro-American political imaginaries\, they are usually invoked to justify Western military intervention into countries like Iraq or Syria\, or as an exemption to anti-Islamic immigration policies because of an assumption that their Christianity makes them easily assimilable in the so-called “Judeo-Christian” West. \nUsing the tools of multisensory ethnography\, Sonic Icons uncovers how these views work against the very communities they are meant to benefit. Through long term fieldwork in the Netherlands among Syriac Orthodox Christians—also known as Assyrians\, Aramaeans\, and Syriacs—Bakker Kellogg reveals how they intertwine religious practice with political activism to save Syriac Christianity from the twin threats of political violence in the Middle East and cultural assimilation in Europe. \nIn a historical moment when much of their tradition has been forgotten or destroyed\, their story of self-discovery is one of survival and reinvention. By reviving the late antique Syriac liturgical tradition known as the Daughters and Sons of the Covenant\, these groups seek a complex form of recognition for what they understand to be the ethical core of Christian kinship in an ethnic and a religious sense\, despite living in societies that do not recognize this unhyphenated form of ethno religiosity as a politically legitimate mode of public identity. \nDrawing on both theological and linguistic understandings of the icon\, Sonic Icons rethinks foundational theoretical accounts of ethnicization\, racialization\, and secularization. \nOrthodox Studies Center events are free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Recent fighting in El Fasher\, the capital of North Darfur\, hit hospitals and most health clinics hard\, and international agencies withdrew. In the aftermath\, the surviving Sudanese medical teams combined efforts to turn a modest maternity hospital and a tin-roof clinic into the city’s last trauma wards. Join us as Darfur Peace and Development Organization (DPDO) President Suliman Giddo\, who has just returned from the Chad border; Dr. Eilaf Mohamed\, who served in the maternity hospital and escaped wounded; and filmmaker/emergency coordinator Daniel J. Gerstle will share their story to illuminate how the international community could do more to help. \nSudan’s western region of Darfur has suffered more than two decades of violence and worsening droughts\, a year of civil war\, and now the brutal siege of its last government and joint force-controlled city\, El Fasher. Over the three-month siege\, fighters have directly targeted hospitals\, medical teams\, pharmacies\, and even health clinics. \nSpeakers \n\nSuliman Giddo\, Ph.D.\, founder and president of DPDO\, will speak about how organizations like his\, the Emergency Response Rooms\, and others could do more with the help of international partners.\nEilaf Mohamed\, M.D.\, an OBGYN from Saudi Maternity Hospital in El Fasher and a physician building a career in psychology\, was one of the first medical staff wounded. She will share what it was like and what could help her colleagues.\nDaniel J. Gerstle\, founder and director of Humanitarian Bazaar and a former emergency coordinator\, is now producing documentary films and has been supporting Sudanese journalists and medical teams to tell the story of health care under fire.\n\nRuth Mukwana\, senior fellow\, and Lily Egan\, communications officer\, both of the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University\, will facilitate the webinar.

SUMMARY:Activism and the Art of Reinvention: Lyn Slater and Christine Platt in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Graduate School of Social Service is proud to host a conversation between author\, social worker\, fashion influencer\, and former GSS professor Lyn Slater\, Ph.D.\, and author Christine Platt\, J.D. The topic of conversation will be “living a life of activism creatively and finding opportunities to promote and facilitate intergenerational collaboration\,” using Slater’s upcoming book How to Be Old: Lessons in Living Boldly from the Accidental Icon (Plume\, 2024) and Platt’s 2021 release The Afrominimalist’s Guide to Living with Less as a framework for the discussion. \nAbout the Speakers\nLyn Slater is a writer\, activist\, social worker\, former professor\, and serial reinventer. Throughout her 47-year career as a social worker\, she has creatively accessed performance\, storytelling\, photography\, fashion\, social media\, and the internet in the service of her advocacy work. In 2014\, when she started a fashion blog at the age of 61\, she instigated a change in how older people are represented in the media\, as well as challenged stereotypes about what it means to be an older adult. She walked away when her role became more about consumerism than culture change. She shares her experience in her memoir\, How to Be Old. Today\, Slater writes on Substack and in a column in her local newspaper that seeks to engage residents of all ages in the project of making their city an age-friendly\, sustainable community. \nChristine Platt is a multigenre author who has carved a unique path in the worlds of lifestyle and literature. She holds a B.A. in Africana studies from the University of South Florida\, an M.A. in African and African American studies from The Ohio State University\, and a J.D. from Stetson University College of Law. Platt currently serves as the executive director for Jacqueline Woodson’s nonprofit residency for artists of the “global majority\,” Baldwin for the Arts. Platt is a member of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs\, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators\, the Association of Black Women Historians\, and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. She also serves as an ambassador for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

SUMMARY:Continuing Education: Sexuality in Serious Illness Care
DESCRIPTION:The provision of whole-person care requires us to recognize the multidimensional impact that living with a serious illness has on each aspect of a patient’s quality of life: physically\, socially\, psychologically\, spiritually\, and culturally. Conducting a comprehensive biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment lays the groundwork for the sensitive exploration of how serious illness and its treatment influences our patient’s sexuality and sexual expression. This interactive workshop will use the PLISSIT model as a foundation to address these concerns. Strategies to support the historically\, politically\, and socially marginalized with these complex and interconnected issues will be explored\, with tools and resources provided. \nCompletion of this class will result in the receipt of 2.5 continuing education hours.

SUMMARY:How Did We Get Here? A Deep Dive into the History of Israel and Palestine\, Part III: 1967–2023
DESCRIPTION:The Hamas-engineered massacre of October 7\, 2023\, stunned and shocked Israel and the Jewish world to the core. It triggered a massive Israeli response that has reduced large parts of northern Gaza to rubble. Supporters of Israel and the Palestinians are more bitterly divided than ever\, around the world and especially on college campuses. What are the roots of today’s conflict? And what does it portend for the future of the region? \nTo gain insight into this latest stage in a brutal and divisive conflict that has ebbed and flowed for more than a century\, Fordham University’s Center for Jewish Studies is sponsoring a four-part series on the history of the conflict with Hussein Ibish\, Ph.D.\, and professor David Myers. During the 2017-2018 academic year\, Ibish and Myers came to campus to deliver a three-part series on the history of this conflict. Five years later\, they return to Fordham to offer an in-depth perspective on the history of Israel-Palestine in light of the current moment. \nThis is the third in a four-part series. For more information about the series\, please visit https://jewishstudies.ace.fordham.edu/how-did-we-get-here-a-deep-dive-into-the-history-of-israel-and-palestine/. \nAbout the Speakers\nHussein Ibish is a senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. He is a weekly columnist for The National and previously served as a senior fellow at the American Task Force on Palestine. \nDavid N. Myers is a distinguished professor and the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair of Jewish History at UCLA. The author and editor of many books\, he directs the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy and the UCLA Initiative to Study Hate.

SUMMARY:Historian Jules Isaac: From the Teaching of Contempt to the Teaching of Esteem
DESCRIPTION:Few people were more influential in changing the relations between the Catholic Church and Jews than the historian Jules Isaac. In his life\, Jules Isaac lived through and played a role in some of the most pivotal moments in European history. Born in 1877\, he closely followed the Dreyfus affair\, which put a spotlight on modern antisemitism in France\, and joined the Drefussard camp. \nAs a historian and a man deeply committed to the French ideal of secularism\, he co-authored with Albert Malet a famous history textbook\, which shaped the way French children studied and understood history. Before focusing his attention on Catholic teachings about Jews and Judaism\, Isaac worked toward Franco-German reconciliation. When\, during World War II\, he was subjected to anti-Jewish laws by the Vichy regime and removed from his job as a teacher\, he turned his attention to the study of the roots of antisemitism. Then\, after the war\, despite the deportation and murder of his wife Laure and his daughter Juliette in Auschwitz\, he found the courage to open a dialogue with the Christian world and work toward reconciliation. \nIn 1948\, Isaac published his influential book Jesus and Israel\, in which he discussed the Jewishness of Jesus\, and founded the French organization called Judeo-Christian Friendship of France. His meeting with Pope Pius XII and his visit to Pope John XXIII on June 13\, 1960\, were both decisive in helping change the Church’s view of Judaism\, leading to the Nostra Aetate declaration of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. \nIsaac\, who died in 1963\, did not see the fruit of his labor: the promulgation of the Declaration “Nostra Aetate.” Emmanuel Chouraqui’s documentary explores the life of Jules Isaac and how he was able to help transform Catholic anti-Jewish teachings “of contempt” into a teaching of esteem. \nWe will view an early version of the film by Emmanuel Chouraqui and hear him discuss the film with Matthieu Langlois and Norman C. Tobias\, the author of Jewish Conscience of the Church: Jules Isaac and the Second Vatican Council.
