SUMMARY:Granting Permission: Toward Embracing Grief in Our Clients\, Our Systems\, Our Colleagues\, and Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:Completion of this Graduate School of Social Service class will result in the receipt of two (2) continuing education hours. \nIn modern Western society\, grief is not granted permission to exist\, to be felt\, without barriers. Grief of all types\, including grief through death as well as grief engendered by serious illness\, ambiguous losses\, and other life challenges and transitions\, is unavoidable within the human experience and is often excruciating. However\, it is rarely sufficiently recognized or supported. By considering and evaluating grief experiences through the lens of their access to permission\, clinicians can collectively imagine and promote inclusivity in grief. Permission will be presented as both a conceptual framework and a clinical tool. We will explore its micro- and macro-level applications across practice settings and populations\, and its utility for both professional and layperson engagement. Building from this foundation\, together we will imagine and set intentions toward building healthcare systems and social institutions that embrace healthier and more supportive narratives about grief.

SUMMARY:Continuing Education — Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking: A Widely Available\, Lesser-Known End-of-Life Option
DESCRIPTION:Completion of this class will result in the receipt of two (2) continuing education hours. \nMore patients are seeking to hasten their deaths by voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED) than by medical aid in dying (MAID). There are two main reasons for this development. First\, this end-of-life option has received significant media attention over the past few years (in books\, journal articles\, and obituaries). Second\, MAID\, which remains available in only twelve states\, patients need not wait for their state legislature to authorize VSED. Patients in every U.S. jurisdiction have the right to refuse any bodily intervention\, including oral nutrition and hydration. \nWhile VSED is legal and totally within the control of the patient themselves\, how should clinicians respond to requests to support the patient during this 8- to 14-day process? Which patients are eligible? Should clinicians apprise patients of this option without first being asked? And how exactly does VSED work? \nThis class addresses these issues as well as more complicated questions concerning VSED for incapacitated patients. Can patients request VSED in their advance directive? Can agents and surrogates request VSED for incapacitated patients without explicit direction from the patient herself? What if the incapacitated patient makes utterances or gestures indicating they now want water? How is VSED different from related approaches to nutrition and hydration such as Comfort Feed Only and Minimal Comfort Feeding?

SUMMARY:Continuing Education—Ambiguous Loss: Understanding the Implications for Hospice and Palliative Care Practice
DESCRIPTION:Completion of this GSS class will result in the receipt of one and one-half (1.5) continuing education hours. \nThis interactive presentation will describe the concept of ambiguous loss and illustrate how it shows up in hospice and palliative social work practice. Case examples and considerations for clinical intervention\, organizational policy\, and social work interprofessional practice will be shared. \nAmbiguous loss is a particular kind of grief in which resolution is not possible. It requires a focus on coping. This presentation will offer an overview of the theory and concepts as described by Pauline Boss\, Ph.D. and others\, and discuss particular considerations for hospice and palliative social work practice. Clinical situations\, including brain death\, life-altering diagnoses\, and progressive losses over the course of serious illness involve ambiguous loss for patients and their families\, caregivers\, and others. Because the loss continues to occur and remains unresolved\, learning to cope with the new situation becomes the focus. Certain situations\, for example\, brain death\, can engender ambiguous loss and\, if not addressed\, can create barriers to effective end-of-life care. Organizational policies around end-of-life care can be influenced by a better understanding of how ambiguous loss manifests and best practices for addressing it through interprofessional interventions. Case examples and interactive lecture will be used to enhance our understanding of how ambiguous loss shows up in practice and how social workers can intervene around this important issue.

DESCRIPTION:Whether facilitating a family meeting\, conducting an advance care planning conversation\, or providing discharge planning\, health social workers are involved as educators in almost every aspect of their practice\, yet few have had explicit training to maximize their effectiveness in this role. This interactive webinar will cover principles of adult education (andragogy) and explore strategies to enhance your influence and impact\, whether in formal educational roles (giving grand rounds\, guest speaking\, presenting at conferences)\, as supervisors\, mentors or sponsors (giving feedback and coaching support)\, or as organizational and community experts (providing advocacy regarding the impact of policies\, etc.). We’ll discuss strategies to expand your influence and provide resources to further your confidence and competence in this important skill. \nAttendees will receive 2 Continuing Education Hours upon completion of the course.

SUMMARY:The Role of Psychologists in Immigration Court: Ethical\, Legal\, and Practical Challenges
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will cover a range of issues that arise when mental health professionals conduct evaluations for Immigration Court. The nature and focus of forensic mental health evaluations in the context of Immigration Court proceedings will be discussed in order to set a framework for understanding the roles that psychologist (and other mental health professionals) can—and often do play. In addition\, the relationship (and distinctions) between forensic and clinical psychology plays an important role in navigating these challenging legal issues\, along with pragmatic considerations (e.g.\, navigating cultural and linguistic challenges) that can complicate these evaluations. Finally\, this presentation will address training needs\, systemic barriers to practice\, and a wide range of ethical issues that arise and require attention.

SUMMARY:Online Discussion: Narrative Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Fordham’s Alliance for Better Health would like to invite you to an online conversation on Thursday\, May 8 with Dr. Rita Charon\, who originated the field of narrative medicine. She is the Bernard Schoenberg Professor of Social Medicine and Professor of Medicine and the founding chair of the Department of Medical Humanities and Ethics at Columbia’s medical school. \nWe will engage in a conversation with her on the challenges in the field and explore our interests in moving the field forward. Narrative medicine is an approach to healthcare that emphasizes the importance of patients’ stories in clinical practice\, research\, and education. It focuses on developing the ability of healthcare professionals to recognize\, absorb\, interpret\, and be moved by the stories of illness. \nNarrative medicine is increasingly recognized as a legitimate and valuable discipline within the practice of medicine—especially in medical education\, primary care\, palliative care\, and psychiatry. For more information please see Dr. Charon’s award-winning books on Narrative Medicine: Honoring the Stories of Illness (Oxford UP\, 2006) and co-author of Principles and Practices of Narrative Medicine (Oxford UP\, 2017).

SUMMARY:Advance Care Planning at the Margins: An Interactive\, Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The provision of whole-person care requires us to recognize the multidimensional impact that living with a serious illness has on each aspect of a patient’s quality of life. \nConducting a comprehensive biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment lays the groundwork for the sensitive exploration of how serious illness and its treatment influence medical decision-making\, especially for those who have been historically\, politically\, and socially marginalized\, as well as those with limited cognitive capacity. \nSocial workers have the clinical background to provide nuanced advance care planning conversations and may be well positioned to offer leadership in expanding advance care planning programs within their organizations. \nThis interactive workshop will explore strategies to support proxy decision-makers for those who are the most vulnerable. Advance care planning tools and resources will be provided. 2.5 Continuing Education hours provided!

SUMMARY:Breaking the Silence: Addressing Gender-Based Violence Across the Lifespan
DESCRIPTION:Gender-based violence transcends age\, culture\, and geography\, affecting individuals at every stage of life. This conference aims to not only deepen our understanding of GBV but also how it manifests\, evolves\, and impacts individuals across the lifespan. With a focus on key life stages\, including childhood and adolescence\, young adulthood\, middle adulthood\, and later years\, we will explore the unique challenges and needs at each stage. The phrase “breaking the silence” highlights the need for open discussion\, advocacy\, and action. Through expert panels and interactive discussions\, participants will explore prevention\, intervention\, and support strategies for each stage of life. This is a call to challenge stigma\, advocate for survivor-centered policies\, and create practices that empower individuals and communities. Join us as we break the silence\, raise awareness\, and inspire change. Together\, we can create a future free from violence\, where action replaces silence.

SUMMARY:Sonic Icons: A Conversation with Sarah Bakker Kellogg and Ashley Purpura
DESCRIPTION:To the extent that Middle Eastern Christians register in Euro-American political imaginaries\, they are usually invoked to justify Western military intervention into countries like Iraq or Syria\, or as an exemption to anti-Islamic immigration policies because of an assumption that their Christianity makes them easily assimilable in the so-called “Judeo-Christian” West. \nUsing the tools of multisensory ethnography\, Sonic Icons uncovers how these views work against the very communities they are meant to benefit. Through long term fieldwork in the Netherlands among Syriac Orthodox Christians—also known as Assyrians\, Aramaeans\, and Syriacs—Bakker Kellogg reveals how they intertwine religious practice with political activism to save Syriac Christianity from the twin threats of political violence in the Middle East and cultural assimilation in Europe. \nIn a historical moment when much of their tradition has been forgotten or destroyed\, their story of self-discovery is one of survival and reinvention. By reviving the late antique Syriac liturgical tradition known as the Daughters and Sons of the Covenant\, these groups seek a complex form of recognition for what they understand to be the ethical core of Christian kinship in an ethnic and a religious sense\, despite living in societies that do not recognize this unhyphenated form of ethno religiosity as a politically legitimate mode of public identity. \nDrawing on both theological and linguistic understandings of the icon\, Sonic Icons rethinks foundational theoretical accounts of ethnicization\, racialization\, and secularization. \nOrthodox Studies Center events are free and open to the public.
