DESCRIPTION:Join us for a three-part online mini-course over the winter break about Jewish Theology in Latin America with Ilan Stavans\, the current Fordham-NYPL Research Fellow in Jewish Studies. This mini-course explores the divine\, religious beliefs\, and their connections to an ethical life as experienced by Jews in Argentina\, Uruguay\, Mexico\, Colombia\, Cuba\, and other parts of Latin America from 1492 to the present. Topics include the persecution of conversos by the Spanish Inquisition\, immigrant Jewish institutions by Ashkenazim and Sephardim\, the Dirty War\, Liberation Theology\, and post-Holocaust Talmudic analysis. Authors featured are Luis de Carvajal the Younger\, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz\, Jorge Luis Borges\, Monsieur Chouchani\, and Rabbi Marshall Meyer. \nIlan Stavans is Lewis-Sebring Professor of Humanities and Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College\, the publisher of Restless Books\, and a consultant to the Oxford English Dictionary. His work\, translated into two dozen languages\, has been adapted into film\, TV\, radio\, and theater. His latest book is Conversations on Dictionaries: The Universe in a Book (Cambridge University Press). This academic year\, Stavans is a New York Public Library-Fordham University fellow on Jewish Studies\, completing a book on Hispanic Antisemitism. \nThis mini-course is possible thanks to the generosity of the friends of Fordham’s Center for Jewish Studies. SUMMARY:'After: Poetry Destroys Silence'—Virtual Film Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The film After: Poetry Destroys Silence juxtaposes two competing claims about poetry after genocide and unspeakable horrors: Theodor Adorno’s statement\, “To write a poem after Auschwitz is barbaric” and Charles Bukowski’s rebuttal\, “Poetry is what happens when nothing else can.” \nAfter explores poetry written about the Shoah\, in which contemporary poets respond to the Holocaust and talk about the importance and need for poetry in a world that still grapples with genocide. Rather than seeing the devastation\, After shows how poets respond to catastrophe and write in its aftermath. The film is ultimately about human resiliency\, the power and courage to forge new lives\, and the value of poetry in looking to the past to help create a better future. \nThe virtual panel discussion will include the film’s director Richard Kroehling\, Amelia Glaser\, a scholar of Slavic and Jewish literature from the nineteenth century to the present and the author of Jews and Ukrainians in Russia’s Literary Borderlands (2012) and Songs in Dark Times: Yiddish Poetry of Struggle from Scottsboro to Palestine (2020)\, and Anna Shternshis\, a scholar of Jewish culture in Russia and the Soviet Union\, oral history as well as Yiddish music and the author of Soviet and Kosher: Jewish Popular Culture in the Soviet Union\, 1923 – 1939 (2006) and When Sonia Met Boris: An Oral History of Jewish Life under Stalin (2017)\, and director of a Grammy-nominated project\, Yiddish Glory: The Lost Songs of WWII\, which highlights forgotten Yiddish music written during the Holocaust in the Soviet Union.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Hollis Landauer on American Denominational and Cause Haggadot
DESCRIPTION:The 20th century saw the breakdown of the hegemony of Orthodox Judaism and the rise of more liberal denominations and liturgies\, many of which reflected changes in the broader culture. This lecture will deal with both American denominational Haggadot\, which include those produced by the three major movements—Reform\, Conservative\, and Orthodox—and English-language\, cause-inspired Haggadot produced by liberal Jews. Since Passover is the Festival of Freedom\, the Haggadah has been often used as a vehicle for responses to historical events and connections with special causes related to social justice or specifically with Jewish issues. \nThe talk will explore cause Haggadot that connect with civil rights\, labor\, hunger\, refugees\, and climate change\, and Jewish causes that revolve around Jewish liberation\, women and LGBTQ issues\, the Holocaust\, Soviet Jewry\, Israel-Palestine\, and leftist secularism. \nAbout the Speaker\nHollis Granoff Landauer is a collector of nontraditional Haggadot. She holds a B.A. from Mt. Holyoke\, an M.A. in Near Eastern languages and literatures from UCLA\, and a library degree from Simmons College. After working in libraries for a number of years\, Granoff Landauer opened a design bookstore\, Another Man’s Poison\, in Toronto\, focusing on books on design\, graphics\, and architecture. She has presented about pre-state kibbutz Haggadot and Holocaust-era Haggadot at Fordham in the past.

SUMMARY:Holy Rebellion or Religious Egoism? The Achievements of Religious Zionist Feminism and the Rabbinic Illiberal Backlash in Israel
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is based on the groundbreaking research presented in Holy Rebellion: Religious Feminism and the Transformation of Judaism and Women’s Rights in Israel (Brandeis\, 2024). Co-authors Tanya Zion-Waldoks and Ronit Irshai will delve into the emergence\, achievements\, and challenges of Religious Zionist (Dati) feminism in Israel—one of the most dynamic and influential movements within contemporary Judaism and Israeli feminism. Drawing from sociological\, theological\, cultural\, and legal perspectives\, the lecture will explore the dual narrative shaping this critical moment in Israeli society. On one hand\, it will spotlight the remarkable strides made by Religious Zionist feminists in challenging gender inequities within Orthodox Judaism and Israeli society at large. On the other\, it will analyze the rising illiberal backlash involving rabbinic authorities seeking to reverse these gains. The authors will discuss the pivotal role of Israel’s judiciary—particularly the Supreme Court—in navigating these tensions and will introduce their book’s innovative theoretical frameworks: the “Narrative Ripeness Test” and the “Dignity Test.” They will also address the broader societal dynamics at play within a “Jewish and democratic” society in crisis. This lecture is a must for anyone interested in the complex interplay of religion\, feminism\, law\, and activism in Israel and beyond. \nAbout speakers:\nTanya Zion-Waldoks\, a tenured assistant professor at the Seymour Fox School of Education at Hebrew University\, investigates intersections of gender\, education\, religion\, and politics. She studies feminist activism for social change\, gender equality in education\, and anti-racist activism in Israel. She published in top journals and her recent book\, with Ronit Irshai\, is Holy Rebellion: Religious Feminism and the Transformation of Judaism and Women’s Rights in Israel (Brandeis University Press\, 2024). She previously held a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University\, and her work is supported by the Israel Science Foundation. \nRonit Irshai is an associate professor and the former head of the gender studies\ndepartment at Bar Ilan University in Israel; a research fellow at the Shalom Hartman institute in Jerusalem (For pluralistic Judaism)\, a member in the board of the Reckman center at Bar Ilan University (For women rights) and a member Kolech; – A religious feminist forum. She has been a visiting scholar at Harvard Divinity School during the academic year of 2007-2008\, a visiting scholar at the Hadassah Brandeis Institute in fall 2016 and a visiting Professor at Gindal Global University in February 2019 in India. Her work focuses on the judicial and theological intersections between Jewish law (Halakhah) and feminist and gender insights\, from diverse Jewish-denominational perspectives\, but especially from the Orthodox angle. She has written numerous articles and book chapters. Among them articles on halakhah (Jewish Law)\, theology and gender; Fertility and Jewish law; Sexual injuries\, halakhah and Israeli Rabbinical courts; Jewish religious feminism; Jewish feminist theologies and Jewish law and LGBTQ people. Her first book: Fertility and Jewish Law – Feminist Perspectives on Orthodox Responsa Literature was published by Brandeis University Press in 2012. The second book on abortion was published in Hebrew by Magness press\, in 2022 and the third book\, Holy Rebellion\, on Modern-Orthodox Feminism in Israel (together with Dr. Tanya Zion-Waldoks) was published by Brandeis University Press in spring 2024. She also co-edited a Jubilee book in honor of Prof. Tamar Ross.

DESCRIPTION:In today’s complex business world\, where “soft skills” like ethical decision-making and communicating across differences are crucial for success\, our career partners increasingly tell us they prefer to hire graduates with liberal arts backgrounds. FCLC alumni consistently build outstanding careers in fields like finance\, management\, and consulting. If you’re thinking about your own path from FCLC to the world of business\, several of our illustrious alumni will be participating in a Zoom webinar panel moderated by Tracyann Williams\, assistant dean for student support and success. \nPanelists \nMaureen Beshar is the executive director of business development for Hardman Johnston Global\nAdvisors LLC\, an investment management firm based in Stamford\, Connecticut\, as well as being a shareholder\nof the firm. Prior to this\, Beshar was CEO of North America for Robeco Investment Management\nin New York. Some prior firm affiliations include Nuveen\, Lazard Asset Management\, Invesco\, and\nSmith Barney. Beshar is a longtime member of Fordham’s President’s Council and has been an\nactive mentor to Fordham students and graduates. She earned a B.A. in philosophy and political\nscience from Fordham University at Lincoln Center in 1986. \nScot Hoffman is a vice president and the director of communications at Dodge & Cox\, a San\nFrancisco-based value-oriented\, investment management firm. In this role\, he leads a team responsible\nfor delivering an integrated communications and brand strategy designed to support Dodge & Cox’s\nglobal business priorities. Prior to joining the firm in 2017\, he was vice president and global head of\ncorporate communications at Prudential Financial Inc. Scot received a B.A. in English and classics\nfrom Fordham University at Lincoln Center in 1998. \nJonathan Valenti is a principal in the financial services practice of Deloitte\, focused on customer\nstrategy and applied design\, and lead for Deloitte Digital’s applied innovation offering. He has 20 years of\nexperience consulting organizations on various strategy projects and transformation programs\, including\nthose for growth strategy\, customer segmentation\, customer experience design\, digital transformation\,\nand innovation. Valenti graduated from Fordham University at Lincoln Center with a B.A. in information science in 1998. \nThe panelists also will be joined by Robert Daly\, assistant dean at the Gabelli School of Business at\nLincoln Center\, who advises FCLC students interested in declaring Gabelli minors.
