SUMMARY:Holy Cow: Religion\, Race\, and Milk in Lancaster County\, Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:In the past 15 years\, Lancaster County has increasingly become a thriving hub for Orthodox Jewish tourists seeking “kosher” leisure activities\, including encounters with the Amish tourist industry. The expanding Orthodox Jewish tourist infrastructure has developed in tandem with an unexpected economic collaboration between some ultra-Orthodox Jews and local Amish and Mennonite farmers to produce unpasteurized kosher dairy products. Based on anthropological research with Orthodox Jewish tourists\, dairy entrepreneurs\, and local Amish/Mennonite farmers\, Feldman and Fader show that kosher collaborations around milk\, in particular\, offer a lens to think through contemporary American racialized politics and minority religious identities in our\npost-COVID-19 and post-Trump realities. \nAbout the Speakers\nRachel Feldman is a cultural anthropologist and currently an assistant professor of religious studies/Judaic studies at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania. Starting on July 1\, she will be moving to Dartmouth College and will be joining the Department of Religion. Feldman is the author of Messianic Zionism in the Digital Age: Jews\, Noahides\, and the Third Temple Imaginary\, a book that is forthcoming from Rutgers University Press and was recently awarded the Jordan Schnitzer first book prize by the AJS. She is also the co-editor of Settler-Indigeneity in the West Bank\, a volume that will be available in July from McGill-Queen’s University Press. \nAyala Fader is a professor of anthropology at Fordham University. She is the author of the award-winning books Mitzvah Girls: Bringing Up the Next Generation of Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn (2009) and Hidden Heretics: Jewish Doubt in the Digital Age (2020). Fader’s research\, supported by prestigious fellowships from the NSF and the NEH\, appears in academic journals and more public venues. Fader is the co-founder of the Seminar on Jewish Orthodoxies at Fordham\, is on the steering committee of the Haredi Research Group\, and is a fellow at the American Academy for Jewish Research. As the director of Fordham’s New York Center for Public Anthropology\, Fader is currently collaborating on the Demystifying Language Project\, which works to make linguistic anthropology a social justice resource for public high schools. \nCo-sponsored by the Seminar on Jewish Orthodoxies and the Haredi Research Group.

SUMMARY:Secularism and Interfaith Dialogue in Modern Nation-States: How the Concept of "Judeo-Christian" Tradition Illuminates the Shaping of French and American Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this event in the CJH-Fordham Lecture Series in Jewish-Christian Relations with Joel Sebban. \nBy focusing on the origins of the concept of “Judeo-Christian tradition” from the end of the 18th century to the mid-20th century in France and the United States\, Joel Sebban offers a rereading of the history of this controversial phrase. The notion of a “Judeo-Christian tradition” derives from a complicated process of redefining Judaism and Christian denominations within the framework of modern nation-states\, more specifically in France and the United States\, the first countries to emancipate Jews in their respective continents at the end of the 18th century and to fully separate Church and State. The history of the “Judeo-Christian tradition” opens new perspectives on the construction of state secularism on both sides of the Atlantic as well as on the acculturation process of Jews into mainly Christian societies. It eventually helps us understand the ways religious communities rethink their texts and traditions within the democratic public space. \nA reception with vegetarian refreshments will follow. \nAll Fordham events in Jewish studies are free.

SUMMARY:Compassion for Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:Tiffany Schiller\, a foundation-year student in the graduate school of social service\, will be offering a free all-levels Yoga class. \nThis 40-minute class will focus on breath work and simple vinyasa sequencing. Classes will be suited for all levels\, including those who have never attempted yoga before. \nThe intention of this class is to invite yoga as a form of self-care into the everyday lives of social work students. Inspired by the words of Audre Lord—“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence\, it is self-preservation\, and that is an act of political warfare”—Tiffany hopes to aid social work students in learning to self-advocate by first finding compassion for themselves and others on a yoga mat. \nPlease bring your own mat and wear clothing that you are comfortable moving around in. This event is open to all Fordham GSS students and alumni. \nIf you have any questions or concerns (e.g.\, “I don’t have a yoga mat\, what do I do?”) please reach out to Tiffany Schiller at tschiller@fordham.edu.

SUMMARY:A Late Arrival: Isaac Bashevis Singer in New York City\, 1935
DESCRIPTION:Fordham-NYPL Lecture Series in Jewish Studies \nNobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer arrived penniless in New York in 1935\, having left his common-law wife and five-year-old son in Warsaw. He entered the United States on a six-month visa\, his older brother having arranged illegal work for him to write for the Jewish daily\, The Forward. His fiction was largely unknown and his subject matter obscure—and yet his mission was to find his way in literature\, which meant taking the literary lessons he had learned in Poland and making them relevant in America. \nThis talk will focus on Singer’s first two decades in America—from his early Yiddish writing in The Forward (beginning in 1935) to his first English collection\, Gimpel the Fool and Other Stories (published in 1957). It will examine Singer’s experience as a Yiddish writer in America as reflected in his cultural journalism\, personal correspondence\, and translation process\, revealing an acculturation process that affected and informed his literary work. \nThis lecture is part of the Fordham-NYPL Lecture Series in Jewish Studies\, which highlights the work of scholars and writers in New York on the Fordham-NYPL Fellowship in Jewish Studies.
