A Catholic Pole embarks on a decade long journey to heal the wounds and bridge the divide. Starting alone\, he confronts the deepest prejudices of his fellow citizens and strives to reconnect Kielce with the outside Jewish community.

SUMMARY:Fordham's Jewish Studies Presents: A Screening of “Witness Theater”
DESCRIPTION:This Yom HaShoah\, please join Fordham’s Jewish studies program and the Jewish Student Organization for a special screening of Witness Theater: The Film. This documentary gives the viewer a look behind the scenes into a unique program led by a drama therapist\, pairing Holocaust survivors with high school students in Brooklyn. The Witness Theater workshop they participate in culminates in the performance of a play based on survivor stories. This moving documentary\, currently shown at film festivals across the country\, is about the power of connection\, friendship\, and love between generations. It is also about healing\, to the extent possible\, in the context of the most brutal genocide in human history.

SUMMARY:Fordham - NYPL Lecture Series: Nina Valbousquet
DESCRIPTION:“Un-American” and “Un-Christian?” Global Antisemitism and Jewish-Catholic Relations in the United States\, 1936–1945. \nThis lecture examines the impact of antisemitism on Jewish-Catholic relations in the United States from 1936 to the Holocaust. It is especially timely today to further investigate the historical shapes of antisemitism in the U.S. and to consider both its religious and secular components. The second half of the 1930s bore witness to an unprecedented “tide of Catholic antisemitism” in America (Father Gregory Feige). In response\, American Jewish defense organizations approached the Vatican and American Catholic leaders to convince them that antisemitism was “un-American” as well as “un-Christian.” The lecture reassesses the weight of home-grown antisemitism (Father Charles Coughlin\, the Christian Front\, and the Tablet of the Brooklyn diocese\, for instance) as well as the impact of global issues such as the Spanish Civil War and the refugees’ crisis on the eve of WWII. \nIn this presentation\, Valbousquet follows cases of Jewish-Catholic collaboration against antisemitism and the initiatives of the American Jewish Committee\, the National Conference of Christians and Jews\, and the Committee of Catholics to Fight Antisemitism. I dedicate specific attention to Jewish-Catholic encounters that took place in New York and especially to the key role of New York universities (Fordham University\, Hunter College\, Jewish Theological Seminary\, among others). As a result\, the lecture discusses the significance of these interactions: to what extent did they go beyond mere religious self-interests and address broader issues of human rights\, racism\, and pluralism? \nAll Fordham events in Jewish studies are free and open to public.

DESCRIPTION:GSAS Futures invites you to join Fordham Bronwen Durocher\, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of English\, and Judith Sheridan\, Ph.D.\, Associate Director for Evaluation and Accreditation at the New York State Association of Independent Schools\, for a conversation on teaching at an independent school. Incorporating a large body of private and parochial schools\, independent schools are often autonomous institutions that value creative and rigorous approaches to classroom instruction. Independent schools court individuals with advanced degrees\, including master’s and Ph.D.’s\, with an interest in applying their expertise to classroom teaching. State certification is not always a requirement for independent school teaching\, and schools that do require certification typically offer guidance and support for teachers to become certified. \nMs. Durocher\, who teaches at Riverdale Country School\, will describe her experience transitioning from graduate school into an independent school classroom\, along with her day-to-day experience teaching. Dr. Sheridan will also discuss her journey from university to secondary school teaching at an independent school. Having worked as the director of an independent school in Manhattan\, Dr. Sheridan hired a number of graduate students and will describe the traits that accompany ideal independent school candidates. \nCoffee and light refreshments will be served. SUMMARY:Behind the Crime:  Interview with a White Collar Felon
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of the hows and whys of white collar crime led by former prosecutor and professor of law at the U. of St. Thomas Law School\, Hank Shea\, and featuring Columbia Law School graduate\, former international finance attorney and ex-offender\, Leigh Sprague. In the latter part of his career\, Mr. Sprague held executive positions in the employ of Russia’s richest oligarchs. As a result of “going native”\, an addiction and resulting poor decisions\, Mr. Sprague stole money from a Russian billionaire and was forced to flee Russia for a life on the run. After conviction in the US and serving a 50 month prison sentence\, Mr. Sprague now writes and talks about his experience in hopes of helping others learn from his mistakes and avoid stumbling down the same sort of slippery slope.
