SUMMARY:Loving Strangers: How Would Such a Moral Code Reshape Our Lives?
DESCRIPTION:Social isolation and animosity are arguably the central challenges of our angry age. Can philosophy play a role in overcoming the affective\, social\, and political alienation that mark our communities today? \nMeghan Sullivan focuses her work on the ways philosophy contributes to the good life\, and she is currently writing a book on the role love plays in grounding moral\, political\, and religious reasoning. It is tentatively titled Samaritanism: Moral Responsibility and Our Inner Lives. In this year’s Daniel J. Sullivan Memorial Lecture\, she will expound on the central themes of this forthcoming book. \nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate a discussion after the talk\, including questions from the audience. \nAbout the Speaker\nMeghan Sullivan is the Wilsey Family College Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. She is a popular writer and speaker and founded Notre Dame’s God and the Good Life Program\, which introduces undergraduates to essential philosophical questions concerning happiness\, morality\, and meaning\, and key methods for wrestling with them.

DESCRIPTION:Sergiy Olehovych Kyslytsya is a Ukrainian career diplomat\, who serves as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Ukraine and permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations. He previously served as deputy minister of foreign affairs of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019. \nAmbassador Kyslytsya will give a live talk covering topics on Ukraine current events\, such as the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. Approximately 10 minutes will be delegated toward opening remarks and an introduction to welcome the ambassador. This will be followed by a talk with an official moderator to oversee the topics and questions of the discussion. The talk will then be followed by a short informal reception where guests can chat and network.

SUMMARY:'Fordham’s Jesuit You’ve Likely Never Heard of: William F. Lynch\, S.J. (1908–1987)'
DESCRIPTION:In May 1960\, following the publication of his best-known work\, Christ and Apollo: The Dimensions of the Literary Imagination\, Time magazine hailed the Jesuit William F. Lynch as “one of the most incisive Catholic intellectuals in the U.S.” However\, by 1987\, Daniel Berrigan could write in his obituary for Lynch (Berrigan’s close friend) that his later years were marked by “remarkable public neglect.” \nAided by documents found in Lynch’s papers in Fordham University’s Archives and Special Collections\, this lecture from Stephen Schloesser\, S.J.\, will try to remember Lynch: his childhood years in an Upper East Side tenement along the East River; attending Regis High School; his years at Fordham—first as a student earning his B.A.\, M.A.\, and Ph.D. degrees\, then as a teacher\, and later as the editor of Thought\, Fordham’s journal of culture and ideas; his struggles with mental illness; and his later years. The lecture will conclude by identifying several key themes in Lynch’s studies of the imagination\, especially the question: “Can we trust the limited and finite to lead somewhere?” \nAbout the Speaker\nStephen Schloesser\, S.J.\, has been a professor of European cultural and intellectual history at Loyola University Chicago since 2011. After receiving his Ph.D. in history and humanities from Stanford University\, Schloesser was a member of the Boston College history faculty between 1999 and 2011. He is the author of Jazz Age Catholicism: Mystic Modernism in Postwar Paris\, 1919–1933 (2005) and Visions of Amen: The Early Life and Music of Olivier Messiaen (2014); curator and editor of “Mystic Masque: Semblance and Reality in Georges Rouault\, 1871–1958” (2008); co-editor with Kyle B. Roberts of Crossings and Dwellings: Restored Jesuits\, Women Religious\, American Experience\, 1814–2014 (2017); and co-editor with Jennifer Donnelson of Mystic Modern: The Music\, Thought\, and Legacy of Charles Tournemire (2014). \nCo-sponsored by the Spellman Jesuit Community

DESCRIPTION:Father Joseph Gill Biography: \nCurrently the chaplain at Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford\, Connecticut\, Father Joseph Gill is a man with a mission. A pilgrimage to Rome at the age of 14 transformed his life. “I remember standing in the Coliseum\, realizing that over 10\,000 people shed their blood for Jesus on that very spot… What can I do with my life to glorify God?” he asked himself. A graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville and Mount St. Mary’s University\, Father Gill was ordained a priest in 2013 for the Diocese of Bridgeport. A singer and musician (keyboard and guitar)\, he has produced several albums of Christian rock. He is also a blogger who has inspired many followers on the internet\, and is author of Days of Grace\, a spiritual novel of suspense. In all of his activities\, Father Gill wishes to share his profound and personal encounter with Jesus Christ. “I want to give my life to him and to make him known and loved\, so that he may set souls ablaze with a passion for holiness.”
