SUMMARY:Pope Leo XIV: Assessing His First Year as Pontiff
DESCRIPTION:A panel of experts and friends of Pope Leo will discuss Robert Prevost’s life before he became pope\, why he was elected\, what this first year showed us\, and what his papacy will mean for the Catholic Church\, and for the world. \nThe Rev. Arthur Purcaro\, OSA\, is a Bronx native and Augustinian priest who got to know Robert Prevost\, a fellow Augustinian\, when they both worked as missionaries in Peru starting in the 1980s. \nEmilce Cuda is an Argentine-born theologian and political scientist who serves as secretary of the Vatican’s Pontifical Commission for Latin America\, which was headed by Cardinal Prevost before he was elected pope. \nMichael Sean Winters is a columnist for National Catholic Reporter who covered the 2025 conclave in Rome and is one of the most knowledgeable commentators on Catholicism in the United States. \nDavid Gibson\, director of the Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate the discussion and questions from the audience. \nThis lecture is made possible by the Russo Family Foundation in memory of Wanda and Robert Russo Sr.\, M.D.\, FCRH ’39.

DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Christopher D. Tirres\, Ph.D.\, Michael J. Buckley Endowed Chair at Santa Clara University. \nHow can spirituality serve as a catalyst for social transformation and healing in an age of darkness and despair? How can we cultivate inclusive and justice-centered approaches to spirituality? \nProfessor Tirres will explore these questions by drawing on the rich traditions of liberation theologies and philosophies of the Americas\, engaging the works of figures such as Gloria Anzaldúa\, José Carlos Mariátegui\, Ada María Isasi-Díaz\, Paulo Freire\, Virgilio Elizondo\, and Ivone Gebara.

SUMMARY:Author Rachel Swarns onThe 272: The Families Who Were Enslaved and Sold to Build the American Catholic Church
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Swarns will discuss her new book\, The 272\, which follows one family through nearly two centuries of indentured servitude and enslavement to illuminate the harrowing origin story of Georgetown University and the Catholic Church in the United States. Through the saga of the Mahoney family\, Swarns illustrates how the Church relied on slave labor and slave sales in Maryland to sustain its operations and to help finance its expansion. Torn apart by a Jesuit slave sale in 1838 and reunited by Swarns’ reporting in 2016\, the Mahoney descendants have joined other GU272 descendants who have pressed Georgetown and the Catholic Church to make amends\, prodding the institutions to break new ground in the movement for reparations and reconciliation in America.

SUMMARY:2023 Rita Cassella Jones Lecture: The Evil of Violence Against Women and The Hope Manifest in Pope Francis’ Enduring Legacy
DESCRIPTION:The 19th Annual Rita Cassella Jones Lecture on Women and U.S. Catholicism will be presented by Nancy Pineda-Madrid\, Ph.D. (Loyola Marymount University).ome \nPineda-Madrid’s lecture will explore how disciples of Jesus Christ must denounce and subvert this evil\, finding in Pope Francis’ writings a source to encourage Christian hope through the subversion of evil. Ultimately\, she claims that the subversion of this evil will enable us to see more clearly the goodness of God in the land of the living—that is\, salvation.

SUMMARY:Who Counts As Catholic? Central American Proxy Wars and the Battle for Catholic Identity
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture presented by Theresa Keeley\, Ph.D.\, University of Louisville. \nMuch of today’s conversation about U.S. Catholics and politics centers on so-called “culture war” issues\, but in the 1970s and 1980s\, Catholics sparred over foreign policy in Central America. Behind the political debate was one about the meaning of Catholic identity. By highlighting this transnational debate\, we can see how contesting Catholic views shaped U.S. Cold War policy and how U.S. foreign policy aggravated divisions among Catholics from the U.S. and Central America.

SUMMARY:The Juncture of Worlds: Scholarship As a Way of Life and Living As a Scholarly Practice
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 17th annual Rita Cassella Jones Lecture on Women and Catholicism. The university began in the Middle Ages as an extension of Catholic monasticism\, an intellectual world separate and apart from the practice of everyday life. In many ways\, advanced scholarship retains something of its original monastic flavor. Academics are taught to keep a respectable distance from their subjects\, to aim for objectivity\, to cultivate detachment. But what are we missing when we constrain scholarship within these normative dimensions? What else might we learn—about the past\, about others\, about even ourselves—if we let down our guard and sidle up close to and alongside our subjects of study? \nIn dialogue with her most recent work on Catholic narratives of sickness and disability in early modern French North America\, Mary Corley Dunn\, Ph.D.\, University of St. Louis\, articulates a vision for a more humane kind of scholarship beyond the ivory tower—a kind of scholarship that sits at the juncture of the personal and the professional\, lived experience and archival record\, scholarly practice and everyday life. \nVisit the website to learn more about the Curran Center.

SUMMARY:15th Annual Rita Cassella Jones Lecture: Cuéntame: How Women's Storytelling Shapes the Future of the Church
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Natalia Imperatori-Lee\, Ph.D.\, professor of religious studies\, Manhattan College\, this lecture explores how undervalued narratives from marginalized communities can and should inform our understanding of the church’s identity and mission. Drawing from historical\, demographic\, and artistic sources\, Professor Imperatori-Lee will show how women are vital not only to the life of the church at present\, but how women are also indispensable to the work of imagining a more inclusive\, more just church for future generation.

SUMMARY:"Everything That Rises Must Converge": Race & Grace in Flannery O'Connor
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion of O’Connor’s “Everything That Rises Must Converge.” The story is a fascinating exploration of race relations written at the height of the Civil Rights Era—yet it is a story that in many ways still speaks to us in our current cultural moment. The story presents an excellent opportunity to engage in conversation about the ways in which the relationships between white Americans and African Americans are portrayed in O’Connor’s story and the degree to which her story mirrors the relationships evident in our own time and place.

SUMMARY:Practicing Justice\, Building Communion: American Catholicism’s Moral Imperative to Embrace Its Hispanic/Latino Identity
DESCRIPTION:The social\, cultural and ecclesial transformations triggered by the fast-growing Hispanic/Latino presence demand that Catholics in the United States renew our commitment to communion and justice amidst diversity. The strength of that commitment will depend on whether the larger U.S. Catholic community embraces or resists a practically irreversible process of hispanization. This lecture defines a path forward into what it means to be American Catholic in the rest of the 21st century.
