SUMMARY:Catholicism As Cultural History: The Enduring Legacy of John O’Malley\, S.J.
DESCRIPTION:John O’Malley\, S.J. (1927–2022) was an extraordinarily talented and devoted scholar\, writer\, teacher\, and Jesuit priest. The research of his early career helped recast our understanding of the Catholic response to the Reformation and the development of the Society of Jesus. The writings of the last 20 years of his long and prolific life—books and essays on church councils and Western culture—brought him new audiences beyond the academy. \nThe golden thread running through all of his work was the centrality of cultural history. This conference will highlight that legacy while expanding on the ways that O’Malley’s style can help us understand a more global and diverse Catholicism of the future. \nAnchored by a keynote address by Carlos Eire of Yale University\, the conference will feature panels on “Catholicism as Cultural History” and “Languages of Dialogue and Inclusion\,” and will include contributions from scholars Pamela Jones\, Mary Dunn\, Thomas Worcester\, S.J.\, Mary Ann Hinsdale\, Catherine Chaput\, and James McCartin. \nFordham’s Brenna Moore will offer concluding remarks\, to be followed by a wine-and-cheese reception. \nThis event is organized by the Center on Religion and Culture and is also made possible through the support of the Spellman Jesuit Community of Fordham\, the Fordham Division on Mission and Ministry\, and the Fordham History Department.

SUMMARY:Voices from the Amazon: Activists on Protecting the Indigenous and Healing the Planet
DESCRIPTION:The fate of the Amazon rainforest is tied to the fate of our planet: The vast region touches eight different South American countries plus French Guiana and is home to more than 2 million indigenous peoples from almost 400 traditional nations. Moreover\, the health of Amazonia’s ecosystem is key to the ecological health of the entire world. \nIf nations can work in concert to protect at-risk human rights and rescue the unique biodiversity of the Amazon\, then we can make great steps in advancing social peace and the common good—as well as saving our common home. \nThis panel of distinguished religious leaders\, activists\, and theologians working to heal the Amazon will discuss the current crisis and prospects for change—and reasons for hope. Many of our speakers are in New York for the March 2023 United Nations Water Conference. \nPanelists \nPedro Barreto\, S.J.\, Archbishop of Huancayo in Peru\, is president of the newly created Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA) and a member of the Board of the Amazonic University Program (PUAM). He is an outspoken defender of human rights and the Amazonian environment and works closely with Pope Francis on these issues. \nPatricia Gualinga is widely known for her work as a defender of the human rights of the Kichwa People of Sarayaku\, an indigenous community in the Ecuadorian Amazon. She is also vice president of CEAMA and a member of the Amazonic University Program. \nFernando Ponce\, S.J.\, is president of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. He is a board member of AUSJAL\, the association of 30 Jesuit universities in Latin America. \nCarol Jeri is the human rights coordinator for Caritas\, the Catholic Church’s development and relief network in Madre de Dios in the Peruvian Amazon\, and a participant of the Human Rights School of the Panamazon Ecclesial Network (REPAM). \nChristiana Zenner is an associate professor of theology at Fordham University who writes widely on religious ecological ethics. She is the author of Just Water: Theology\, Ethics\, and Global Fresh Water Crises. \nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate a discussion with the audience. \nThis event is organized and co-sponsored by the Amazonic University Program (PUAM)\, which is part of the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA)\, and the Association of Jesuit Universities in Latin America (AUSJAL).

SUMMARY:Taking Responsibility: Jesuit Educational Institutions Confront the Causes and Legacy of Clergy Sexual Abuse Keynote Plenary Panel
DESCRIPTION:This panel features five distinguished speakers addressing the core questions of the Taking Responsibility project. They will help us ask how to confront and handle the history of clerical sexual abuse and its many legacies in the present. This event brings together one of the foremost researchers on clerical sexual abuse in the United States\, a Jesuit who is also a survivor of clerical sexual abuse and whose research is directed at the crisis\, two well-known writers who are survivors and who have deep ties to Jesuit educational institutions\, including Fordham\, and the director of a major Truth and Healing initiative at a Jesuit-sponsored high school for Native American students. \nFrom their own perspectives\, each member of this group will reflect on the long and recent history of the sexual abuse crisis. We are honored to host these colleagues as they address the pressing question of what it means for today’s Jesuit institutions (and their employees\, students\, and graduates) to take responsibility for addressing and redressing the bitter legacy of clerical sexual abuse.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Justice for Children: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:All children should be protected from violence\, exploitation\, and abuse. Yet millions of children worldwide—from all socioeconomic backgrounds and across all ages\, religions\, and cultures—suffer violence\, exploitation\, and abuse every day. And millions more are at risk. Looking back at the last century\, have we created a more just world for children? \nIn honor of Social Work Month 2020\, Fordham’s Graduate School of Social Service is hosting a lecture devoted to these important topics. Shirley Gatenio Gabel\, Ph.D.\, the newly appointed MaryAnn Quaranta Endowed Chair in Children for Social Justice\, will discuss how our sense of justice for children has changed and explore the future expectations for justice we are creating for children. Attendees are invited to stay after the lecture for a networking reception. \nFeatured Speaker Bio:\nShirley Gatenio Gabel\, M.S.W and Ph.D.\, is a professor who was recently appointed as the MaryAnn Quaranta Endowed Chair in Children for Social Justice at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service. She began her career as a case worker in child welfare and in community organizing\, moving to lobbying and policy analysis. Gatenio Gabel has served as a consultant to UNICEF\, UNESCO\, and U.N. member countries on child poverty and social protection and represents the International Association of Schools of Social Work at the United Nations. She has been an invited to speak on children and families\, human rights\, and comparative social policies around the world. She is the editor of a book series on applying rights-based approaches to social work practice and is the co-founder/co-editor of the Journal of Human Rights and Social Work.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Book Launch for America's Last Great Newspaper War: The Death of Print in a Two-Tabloid Town
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book launch to celebrate the publication of America’s Last Great Newspaper War: The Death of Print in a Two-Tabloid Town by Mike Jaccarino. Refreshments will be served. \nAmerica’s Last Great Newspaper War is a from-the-trenches view of New York Daily News and New York Post runners and photographers as they stop at nothing to break the story and squash their tabloid arch-rivals. \nWhen author Mike Jaccarino was offered a job at the Daily News in 2006\, he was asked a single question: “Kid\, what are you going to do to help us beat the Post?” That was the year things went sideways at the News\, when the New York Post surpassed its nemesis in circulation for the first time in the history of both papers. Tasked with one job—crush the Post—Jaccarino here provides the behind-the-scenes story of how the runners and shooters on both sides would do anything and everything to get the scoop before their opponents. \nThe New York Daily News and the New York Post have long been the Hatfields and McCoys of American media: two warring tabloids in a town big enough for only one of them. As digital news rendered print journalism obsolete\, the fight to survive in New York became an epic\, Darwinian battle. In America’s Last Great Newspaper War\, Jaccarino exposes the untold story of this tabloid death match of such ferocity and obsession its like has not occurred since Pulitzer–Hearst. \nTold through the eyes of hungry “runners” (field reporters) and “shooters” (photographers) who would employ phony police lights to overcome traffic\, Mike Jaccarino’s memoir unmasks the do-whatever-it-takes era of reporting—where the ends justified the means and nothing was off-limits. His no-holds-barred account describes sneaking into hospitals\, months-long stakeouts\, infiltrating John Gotti’s crypt\, bidding wars for scoops\, high-speed car chases with Hillary Clinton\, O.J. Simpson\, and the baby mama of a philandering congressman—all to get that coveted front-page story. \nToday\, few runners and shooters remain on the street. Their age and exploits are as bygone as the News–Post war and American newspapers\, generally. Where armies once battled\, often no one is covering the story at all.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Orthodoxy and Anthropology in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Most scholarly engagements with Orthodox Christianity rest in the fields of theology and history\, with little ethnographic focus on the socio-political\, everyday lives of Orthodox Christians today. Similarly\, anthropology of Orthodoxy is often devoid of theological sensitivity. In an effort to make Orthodox Studies holistic and attuned to the experiences of believers\, this panel brings together theologians and anthropologists of Orthodox Christianity to think through the social life of religious concepts and the future of the field. Orthodoxy is not a tradition of the past\, but rather is forged by the challenges of the modern world and the debates of contemporary life. \nModerators:\nCandace Lukasik\, OCSC Coptic Studies Fellow\nSarah Riccardi-Schwartz\, OCSC NEH Dissertation Fellow \nPanelists:\nAngie Heo\, University of Chicago\nSonja Thomas\, Colby College\nElina Vuola\, University of Helsinki\nAlexandra Antohin\, Avoice Virtual Library Project\nDonna Rizk Asdourian\, Independent Scholar

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Pope Francis: Reform and Resistance
DESCRIPTION:As Francis’s remarkable pontificate approaches its seventh anniversary\, the pope is facing an increasingly virulent and vocal opposition—much of it based in the United States or funded by American Catholics. How serious is this opposition? Is it damaging the Church? The papacy? Or is it only directed at Francis and will recede when he leaves the scene? \nThese questions will be at the heart of a discussion with papal biographer Austen Ivereigh\, who will be at Fordham for the United States launch of his new biography\, Wounded Shepherd: Pope Francis and His Struggle to Convert the Catholic Church.
