Andrew S. Hillman, a visiting lecturer of diplomacy in Fordham University’s graduate program in International Political Economy and Development (IPED), died recently at his home in Edgemont, N.Y. He was 57.
He was buried July 16 in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.
For the past seven years, Hillman, a foreign service officer assigned to the United States Mission to the United Nations, taught two graduate seminars at Fordham. His fall course focused on the United Nations and international security. His spring seminar explored conflict resolution.
Hillman was in the process of developing a new seminar focused on terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
He consistently received high teaching evaluations and was highly regarded by students who appreciated his professionalism and ability to bring real-world issues into the classroom, said Henry Schwalbenberg, Ph.D., director of IPED.
“Professor Hillman was a very devoted and caring teacher. He not only delivered well-prepared lectures, but he also gave easily of himself as a wonderful mentor to his students,” Schwalbenberg said. “He encouraged and guided a number of our students, some of whom went on to pursue public service careers with various U.S. and U.N. agencies and others who went on to serve overseas with various international humanitarian organizations.”
Hillman earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University.
