The Fordham University community mourns the death of George Doty, of Rye, N.Y., on April 24. He was 94.
Doty was born in Brooklyn on Feb. 15, 1918, in New York City. He graduated from Fordham University with a bachelor of science degree in 1938 and earned a mater’s degree from Columbia University in 1939.
Along with his wife, Marie Doty, he received an honorary doctor of humane letters, L.L.D., from Fordham University in 1981.
Doty was a Trustee Emeritus and served as the chair of Fordham’s Board of Trustees from 1971 to 1980. He was also known as the donor who has given more consistently than anyone else in theUniversity’s history.
Among he and his wife Marie’s gifts to the University were the Dr. M. J. Werthman, GSAS ’85, Memorial Endowed Scholarship, which supports female graduate students who are engaged in the study and clinical treatment of mental illness, and the Marie Ward Doty University Chair for the Aging.
Doty served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and was discharged with the rank of commander. He was a partner in Goldman, Sachs & Co., until 1984. Prior to that, he was a partner at Lybrand, Ross Bros. and Montgomery, C.P.A.s.
He is survived by his daughters, Anne Marie Paine of Fairfield, Conn.; Barbara Doty of Sag Harbor, N.Y.; and Virginia Doty; and sons George Doty Jr., of New York City, and William Doty of Harrison, N.Y., and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Doty’s wife, Marie, died in 2008.
