Fordham has been ranked 55th out of the top 101 colleges that make veterans’ success a priority in a survey by Military Times EDGE magazine.
The magazine, which focuses on career and educational opportunities for servicemen and women, invited more than 4,000 accredited institutions of higher learning to submit information about their veterans’ programs, policies and resources.
Colleges and universities that responded were evaluated in four categories, including:
• financial assistance, such as scholarships, discounts and waivers specifically for veterans;
• academic flexibility, including partnerships with military education networks and acceptance of military learning and subject tests;
• campus culture, including the percentage of veterans in the student body and faculty; and
• support services, such as the number and kind of staff designated to work with veterans.
Fordham is one of two New York City-area universities included on the list.
“This is a tremendous source of pride and encouragement for the people in many offices who have worked hard to make sure Fordham is as veteran-friendly as possible,” said Michael Gillan, Ph.D., co-chair for the FordhamVets Task Group and associate vice president for the Westchester campus.
Fordham is a participant in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, which allows the University to offer grants matched by the government to cover all tuition and fees for veterans in the 100 percent eligibility category.
Those are vets who have been on active duty for at least 36 months since Sept. 11, 2001, or who served 30 continuous days after 9/11 and have been honorably discharged from active duty for a service-related disability.
Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham, was among the first university presidents to opt for full participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program.
