The Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education kicks off its Winter Institute series, a five-week course titled “Ethics and Identity in Pastoral Ministry,” on Saturday, Jan. 13, with a presentation by Catholic moral theologian Richard Gula, S.S., Ph.D. Father Gula is a professor of moral theology at the Franciscan School of Theology of the General Theological Union in Berkeley, Ca., who specializes in professional ethics for ministers. His keynote presentation, “Just Ministry: When Ministers Turn Pro,” will be the first of five daylong sessions making up the three-credit course, and is open to the public, with prior registration and tuition.

The purpose of the institute is to assess the theological foundations for ministerial ethics, and to examine ethical and moral responsibilities of the professional minister. Course topics include power relations, sexuality, identity and confidentiality in ministry. The institute will feature different speakers each week, including Anthony Ciorra, S.J., Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education and Zeni Fox, Ph.D., Seton Hall University. The course will meet for five consecutive Saturdays, through Feb. 17, at Keating Hall, Rose Hill campus.
