John Bugg, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of English, received the 2023 Marilyn Gaull Book Award on Dec. 15 for his book British Romanticism and Peace (Oxford University Press). The award is conferred by the Wordsworth-Coleridge Association in recognition of the most outstanding monograph, biography, or scholarly edition reviewed during the previous year.
Rufus Burnett Jr., Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology, delivered a talk titled “Blue Notes on Flesh: Regenerating Intimacy in a Racialized World” on Nov. 15. at the University of Notre Dame as part of the Nanovic Institute’s Decolonizing Scholarship Lecture Series.
Leo Guardado, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, assistant professor of theology, published the book Church as Sanctuary: Reconstructing Refuge in an Age of Forced Displacement (Orbis Books, 2023.)
Sarit Kattan Gribetz, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, associate professor of theology, published the essay “Secrets of Time: The Pursuit of Divine Wisdom and The Dead Sea Scrolls” on Nov. 10 on the website Marginalia Review of Books. She also participated in an online interview about her research in the Researching Religion series and delivered a talk titled “How Did Helena of Adiabene Become Queen of Jerusalem?” on Dec. 5 as the Kwartler Family Lecturer at Princeton University.
Michael Peppard, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology, published a new introduction to the Gospel of Mark in The SBL Study Bible, which is in the revised edition of The HarperCollins Study Bible, (HarperOne, 2023).
Lance Strate, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of communication and media studies, published his third collection of poetry, First Letter of My Alphabet (NeoPoiesis Press, 2023). He also published the preface to the sixth edition of Science and Sanity: An Introduction to Non-Aristotelian Systems and General Semantics (Institute of General Semantics, 2023). He also published the foreword to Can We Zoom into God: A Major Critique of New Church Worship—Causes and Effects (Wipf and Stock, 2023)
He presented a paper, “Justice, Reason, and the Open Society: Towards a Non-Aristotelian Approach to Democracy,” at the New York State Communication Association 81st Annual Conference held from Oct. 13 to 15 at the Villa Roma Resort and Conference Center.
He was also interviewed for an episode of the Godian Cross podcast series.
Magda Teter, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of history and Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies, spoke at a conference, Addressing Antisemitism: Contemporary Challenges, on Jan. 28 hosted by the Center for Jewish History. She spoke about antisemitism in the U.S. on a panel with Pamela Nadell and Jonathan Sarna.
Jennifer Udell, Ph.D., ADMINISTRATION, was on a panel discussion titled “Art: Culture, Ownership, and Society,” presented by the New York Classical Club, the NYU Classics Department, and the NYU Center for Ancient Studies on Jan. 27.
Christiana Zenner, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, associate professor of theology, was a featured commentator on NPR’s All Things Considered on the episode Pope Francis: Climate Activist? on Nov. 20. She also led a workshop called “The Practical Ethics of AI for Humanists” at the University of Connecticut on Nov. 27 and appeared in an international webinar with atmospheric scientist Katharine Hayhoe, Ph.D., and Jose Aguto, director of the Catholic Climate Covenant, titled “Faith Voices at COP-28” on Nov. 30.
