The Rev. John O’Malley, S.J., Fordham’s newest Loyola Chair in the Humanities, will present a lecture titled “The Big Picture: Four Cultures of Western Christianity” on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. in the Flom Auditorium at Walsh Library on the Rose Hill campus. Fr. O’Malley, who is writing a book with the same title, will discuss four cultures that are basic traditions in Western religion, education and expression. These cultures, with origins in antiquity, still affect the Western world today. Fr. O’Malley, a professor of church history at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., is an internationally recognized expert in the Renaissance, Reformation and Counter-Reformation periods. He has written or edited several award-winning books. Among the most recent are The First Jesuits (Harvard, 1993) and Trent and All That: Renaming Catholicism in the Early Modern Era (Harvard University Press, 2000). The Loyola Chair was established in 1992 with a $1-million grant from Fordham’s Jesuit community. Its purpose is to foster research and teaching in the humanities in the Jesuit tradition.
