Anil Kalhan, a visiting assistant professor of law at Fordham Law School, will discuss “Pakistan, Martial Law and the Rule of Law” at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, as part of the Leitner Center for International Law and Justice Speaker Series.
Kalhan, who has worked for the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project and is a member of the council of advisors for South Asian American Leaders of Tomorrow, has written extensively about Pakistan, most recently “Whither Pakistan’s Charter of Democracy?” in the Sept. 8 issue of the online news site AsiaMedia. The lecture will be held in Room 310 of the Law School, 140 West 62nd St.
On Nov. 3, Pakistan’s president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, declared a state of emergency and imposed what amounts to martial law. The country’s constitution has been suspended, private television stations have been closed and opposition leaders have been arrested. Fordham Law School’s Leitner Center for International Law and Justice, which was established earlier this year, contributes to the promotion of social justice by encouraging knowledge of and respect for international law and human rights standards.
