“How are the bagels? Are they good, bad or indifferent?”

Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham University, chatted with students in an informal breakfast to celebrate Ignatian Awareness Week at the Lincoln Center campus on Jan. 31. The celebration was sponsored by the Office of Campus Ministry. Joan Cavanaugh, the office’s assistant director, raffled off a copy of Thoughts of St. Ignatius Loyola (Fordham University Press, 2006) to the students who attended. The book of daily maxims was originally published in 1928 and was republished last year to commemorate the Jesuit Jubilee.

“What better gift than this for Ignatian Awareness Week, to capture the spirit of the event,” she said.

Father McShane bantered with the group of students, many of whom had met him before and some who came for the chance to make his acquaintance.

“Awareness week is definitely something that I look forward to every year,” said Tamara Shehadeah, a Fordham College at Lincoln Center senior.

“It’s been fun talking with him,” said Carley Beck, a Fordham College at Lincoln Center junior, after meeting Father McShane for the first time. “His ice breaker was my strawberry scone. Anybody who can make a conversation from that is all right.”
