James Dechant and Sónia da Silva Monteiro, ARTS AND SCIENCES, theology Ph.D. candidates, received the Hank Fellowship in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition for summer 2022.

Edward Dunar, Ph.D. 2021, ARTS AND SCIENCES, published the chapter, “Undoing the Memory Wipe: Metz, Droids, and the Victims of History,” in Theology and the Star Wars Universe (Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, 2022). The book was published in July.

Julie L. Gafney, Ph.D., ADMINISTRATION, Executive Director Center for Community Engaged Learning, was inducted into the All Hallows High School Hall of Fame at the President’s Hall of Fame Dinner 2022 on October 27. 

Sarit Kattan Gribetz, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, associate professor of theology, discussed some of her research about gender in antiquity on the new “Women Who Went Before” podcast on August 30. The episode is titled “Invisible Women and How They Make History,” available here.

Quamrul Haider, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of physics, published an article in the Daily Star entitled, “Man, technology, and the environment” on June 5, 2021. You can read the article here.

Bradford E. Hinze, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology, and Karl Rahner chair in theology,  published Confronting a Church in Controversy, Paulist Press, 2022 on June 7. In June, he also published a chapter in a collection of essays, “What Is the Spirit Saying to the Churches Through the Laments of the Faithful?” in Receptive Ecumenism as Transformative Ecclesial Learning: Walking the Way to a Church Re-Formed. Claire Koen, ARTS AND SCIENCES, Ph.D. candidate in JCIA, attended the American Papyrological Society’s Summer Institute at the University of Cincinnati which ran from June 20 – July 19 where she received training in papyrology and worked on transcribing and translating three original papyri and one ostracon. She also presented “Landscapes and Mindscapes in the Writings of Shenoute of Atripe” at the May meeting of the North American Patristics Society. 

Galina Krasskova, ARTS AND SCIENCES, Ph.D. candidate in theology, had six acrylic paintings included in a professional gallery show throughout the month of August, curated by Riverwinds Gallery and hosted at the Live-4-Art gallery in Pawling, NY.

Kathryn Kueny, Ph.D, ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology, published a review essay of ‘Islam: An Advanced Introduction,’ in Journal of Near Eastern Studies, vol. 81 no. 2 (October 2022): pp. 433-434.

Srdjan Maksimovic, ARTS AND SCIENCES, Ph.D., candidate in Judaism and Christianity in Antiquity, delivered a lecture on August 23 titled “Prayer, dialogue with God.” This was the featured event lecture during the Municipal Spiritual and Cultural Week in Cajnice, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was attended by over 300 people. Aristotle Papanikolaou, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology and Archbishop Demetrios Chair in Orthodox Theology and Culture, co-edited with Thomas Arentzen and Ashley Purpura (Fordham 2014) Orthodox Tradition and Human Sexuality (Fordham University Press), in which he published the article, “A Theology of Sex”.

Michael Peppard, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology, had two articles published: “Apostolic Posture: Mary Magdalene as Witness to Death and Resurrection in Art,” in Death and Rebirth in Late Antiquity (ed. Lee M. Jefferson; Lexington Books / Fortress Academic, 2022, 197–216); and “Fumbling the First Amendment,” in Commonweal, July 6. He also presented “Is No One Immortal? Greek Epitaphs and Their Adaptations in Early Christianity” at the May meeting of the North American Patristics Society.

Annie George-Puskar, Ph.D., EDUCATION, assistant professor of curriculum and teaching, is being invested into the Order of Malta on November 18 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. 

Magda Teter, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of history and the Shvidler Chair of Judaic Studies became President of the American Academy for Jewish Research, over the summer. AAJR is the oldest organization of Judaic scholars in North America, established in 1920. Read more about the AAJR here.

Cristina Traina, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology, and Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J. Chair in Catholic Theology, recently published an essay entitled “Family/ies and Transcendence”. It’s an open access article in The Transcendent Character of the Good: Philosophical and Theological Perspectives, ed. Pertuschka Schaafsma (Routledge, 2022), the ebook was published on August 9.

Larry Welborn, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology, presented a paper on “The Prerogatives of Age in First Clement” at the symposium on “Conceptualizing Old Age in Ancient Jewish and Early Christian Contexts,” which took place on June 2 at the Protestant Theological University in Amsterdam and was co-sponsored by the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology, & Religious Studies at Radboud University.

Larry Welborn, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology, published an essay entitled “Writing the Sublime in a Destitute Time” in Ancient Philosophy and Early Christianity, ed. Gideon Kotze and Philip Bosman (Leiden:  Brill, 2022) 287-312.

Larry Welborn, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of theology, published an essay entitled “The Materiality of Grace: Paul’s Collection for the Poor” in God’s Grace Inscribed on the Human Heart, ed. Peter Bolt and Sehyun Kim  (Sydney:  SCD Press, 2022) 241-70. The book was published on August 31.

Christiana Zenner, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, associate professor of theology, science and ethics, was featured in a conversation about her work in ecology, theological ethics, and fresh waters, hosted by Rev. Dr. John Thatamanil in conjunction with the Centre for the Study of Religion and Society at the University of Victoria and the Episcopal Church of St. John the Divine in Victoria, BC, on August 14. Christiana Zenner, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, associate professor of theology, science and ethics, was a participant in the weeklong Environmental Humanities Institute at Colby College from August 1-7, where she workshopped part of her current book project on Anthropocene theologies and ethics with a selected group of 30 scholars from five continents.
