SUMMARY:Exhibition: Banned! A History of Censorship
DESCRIPTION:Books\, libraries\, librarians\, and writers are subject to attacks—again. Recent bans of books across the United States targeting Black history\, the Holocaust\, and LGBTQ themes have dominated the news. But book censorship has a longer history. “Banned! A History of Censorship” explores this history\, along with practices of censorship\, the methods to control and ban books and ideas\, the resilience of censored works\, and attempts to push back. \nAs the Talmud says\, “The parchment is burning\, but its letters are flying to the heavens.” Authorities could ban books\, but they could not destroy them or the ideas contained in them entirely. Indeed\, while today some voices are heard complaining about universities not teaching major texts of “Western civilization\,” many of these books were originally banned across Europe—by Protestant and Catholic authorities: Thomas Hobbes\, John Locke\, David Hume\, Denis Diderot\, Jean-Jacques Rousseau\, John Stuart Mill\, Immanuel Kant\, and more. Major works of literature—cherished today—were also banned\, among them Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables or Alexander Dumas’s Three Musketeers\, which were on “Index Librorum Prohibitorum\,” or the Index of Prohibited Books. \nAs this exhibit demonstrates\, cultural\, religious\, and moral values are never static. They change over time. If some of the books and ideas become acceptable\, others might become abhorrent. Because Fordham as a Catholic and Jesuit university was obliged to abide by the Index of Prohibited Books until its abolition in 1966\, the exhibit also explores how Fordham dealt with books that were included in the Index. \nThe exhibit is on view at the Walsh Family Library in the main exhibition hall on the first floor and in the Special Collections on the fourth floor. \nThe exhibit is a collaboration between Fordham University’s Walsh Family Library—especially its O’Hare Special Collections—and the Center for Jewish Studies. It was curated by Gabriella DiMeglio; Amy Levine-Kennedy; Hannorah Ragusa\, FCRH ’26; and Magda Teter. Vivian Shen at the special collections and archives set up the exhibit with great care and attention to detail. Additional research has been provided by Samantha Sclafani\, FCLC ’22\, and Kevin Bogucki\, FCLC ’23. The lecture series and student research associated with the exhibit have been made possible through the generosity of donors to the Center for Jewish Studies at Fordham.

SUMMARY:The Mayor’s Office and the Church: NYC Migrant State of Emergency

SUMMARY:How Did We Get Here?: A Deep Dive into the History of Israel and Palestine\, Part II: 1948–1967
DESCRIPTION:The Hamas-engineered massacre of October 7\, 2023\, stunned and shocked Israel and the Jewish world to the core. It triggered a massive Israeli response that has reduced large parts of northern Gaza to rubble. Supporters of Israel and the Palestinians are more bitterly divided than ever\, around the world and especially on college campuses. What are the roots of today’s conflict? And what does it portend for the future of the region? \nTo gain insight into this latest stage in a brutal and divisive conflict that has ebbed and flowed for more than a century\, Fordham University’s Center for Jewish Studies is sponsoring a four-part series on the history of the conflict with Hussein Ibish\, Ph.D.\, and professor David Myers. During the 2017-2018 academic year\, Ibish and Myers came to campus to deliver a three-part series on the history of this conflict. Five years later\, they return to Fordham to offer an in-depth perspective on the history of Israel-Palestine in light of the current moment. \nThis is the second in a four-part series. For more information about the series\, please visit https://jewishstudies.ace.fordham.edu/how-did-we-get-here-a-deep-dive-into-the-history-of-israel-and-palestine/. \nAbout the Speakers\nHussein Ibish is a senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. He is a weekly columnist for The National and previously served as a senior fellow at the American Task Force on Palestine. \nDavid N. Myers is a distinguished professor and the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair of Jewish History at UCLA. The author and editor of many books\, he directs the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy and the UCLA Initiative to Study Hate.

SUMMARY:MOSAIC Volunteer Outing with America Needs You
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a meaningful way to spend your Saturday? Then volunteer for a day with MOSAIC as a workshop coach with America Needs You (ANY)\, where you’ll join the fight for economic mobility for ambitious\, first-generation college students. \nCoaches work with college students during Saturday sessions to build their professional skills and help them realize their career potential. Saturday workshops serve ANY’s student fellows\, who are all first-generation college students. Coaches work with fellows on the day’s curriculum and activities by serving as a substitute mentor coach when the fellow’s mentor coach is absent for the day or by offering additional professional perspectives to an existing mentor coach-fellow pair. ANY curriculum covers all kinds of professional development topics\, from resume preparation and interview etiquette to giving and receiving feedback and managing up. \nAt workshops\, coaches typically participate in group or one-on-one work with fellows; for example\,\nwriting and reviewing a cover letter or building a pros/cons list for deciding between two internships. Workshops are generally from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Workshop coaches will expose students to their industries and prepare students to pursue internship/job opportunities by leading small group activities\, networking\, serving on panels\, or giving industry presentations. Coaches will receive additional details and logistics from an ANY staff member closer to the event date. Volunteers also attend a brief orientation on the day of the event. \nMOSAIC members will have the unique opportunity to volunteer with ANY as a group\, an experience that is generally reserved for ANY’s partner companies and organizations. ANY is looking for college graduates with one-plus year of post-graduation work experience who are willing to share their industry expertise and network. \nWe hope you can join us!

SUMMARY:Historian Jules Isaac: From the Teaching of Contempt to the Teaching of Esteem
DESCRIPTION:Few people were more influential in changing the relations between the Catholic Church and Jews than the historian Jules Isaac. In his life\, Jules Isaac lived through and played a role in some of the most pivotal moments in European history. Born in 1877\, he closely followed the Dreyfus affair\, which put a spotlight on modern antisemitism in France\, and joined the Drefussard camp. \nAs a historian and a man deeply committed to the French ideal of secularism\, he co-authored with Albert Malet a famous history textbook\, which shaped the way French children studied and understood history. Before focusing his attention on Catholic teachings about Jews and Judaism\, Isaac worked toward Franco-German reconciliation. When\, during World War II\, he was subjected to anti-Jewish laws by the Vichy regime and removed from his job as a teacher\, he turned his attention to the study of the roots of antisemitism. Then\, after the war\, despite the deportation and murder of his wife Laure and his daughter Juliette in Auschwitz\, he found the courage to open a dialogue with the Christian world and work toward reconciliation. \nIn 1948\, Isaac published his influential book Jesus and Israel\, in which he discussed the Jewishness of Jesus\, and founded the French organization called Judeo-Christian Friendship of France. His meeting with Pope Pius XII and his visit to Pope John XXIII on June 13\, 1960\, were both decisive in helping change the Church’s view of Judaism\, leading to the Nostra Aetate declaration of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. \nIsaac\, who died in 1963\, did not see the fruit of his labor: the promulgation of the Declaration “Nostra Aetate.” Emmanuel Chouraqui’s documentary explores the life of Jules Isaac and how he was able to help transform Catholic anti-Jewish teachings “of contempt” into a teaching of esteem. \nWe will view an early version of the film by Emmanuel Chouraqui and hear him discuss the film with Matthieu Langlois and Norman C. Tobias\, the author of Jewish Conscience of the Church: Jules Isaac and the Second Vatican Council.
