SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: James Park on The Valuation Treadmill: How Securities Fraud Threatens the Integrity of Public Companies
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lunchtime talk with UCLA Law professor James Park\, author of the forthcoming book The Valuation Treadmill: How Securities Fraud Threatens the Integrity of Public Companies\, who will discuss the history of securities fraud regulation from the 1960s until the present. \nPublic companies now face constant pressure to meet investor expectations. The typical public company must continually deliver strong short-term performance every quarter to maintain its stock price. This valuation treadmill creates incentives for corporations to deceive investors. Published 20 years after the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley\, which requires all public companies to invest in measures to ensure the accuracy of their disclosures\, The Valuation Treadmill shows how securities fraud became a major regulatory concern. Drawing on case studies of paradigmatic securities enforcement actions involving Xerox\, Penn Central\, Apple\, Enron\, Citigroup\, and General Electric\, the book argues that corporate securities fraud emerged as investors increasingly valued companies based on their future performance. Corporations now have an incentive to issue unrealistically optimistic disclosure to convince markets that their success will continue. Securities regulation must do more to protect the integrity of public companies from the pressure of the valuation treadmill. \nAgenda\n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks: Sris Chatterjee\, chair\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n12:03 p.m.: Speaker Introduction: David Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n12:08: p.m.: Presentation: James Park \n12:45 p.m.: Audience Q&A \n1 p.m.: Closing Remarks: David Cowen \nAbout the Speaker\nJames Park is a professor of law at UCLA School of Law\, where he teaches securities regulation. Before becoming a law professor\, he worked as an assistant attorney general in the Investor Protection Bureau of the New York Attorney General’s Office. He is a graduate of Yale Law School and Miami University (Ohio). \nCopies of The Valuation Treadmill will be raffled off to attendees. \nThis event is co-sponsored with the CFA Society New York\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance.

SUMMARY:Centennial Speaker Series: Bruce Usher on Investing in the Era of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:A climate catastrophe can be avoided\, but only with rapid and sustained investment in companies and projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To the surprise of many\, this has already begun. Investors are abandoning fossil-fuel companies and other polluting industries and financing businesses offering climate solutions. Rising risks\, evolving social norms\, government policies\, and technological innovation are all accelerating this movement of capital. \nBruce Usher offers an indispensable guide to the risks and opportunities for investors as the world faces climate change. He explores the role that investment plays in reducing emissions to net zero by 2050\, detailing how to finance the winners and avoid the losers in a transforming global economy. Usher argues that careful examination of climate solutions will offer investors a new and necessary lens on the future for their own financial benefit and for the greater good. Companies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions will create great wealth\, and\, more importantly\, they will provide a lifeline for humanity. \nGrounded in academic and industry research\, Usher’s insights bring clarity to a complex and controversial topic while illuminating the people behind the numbers. This book sets out a practical and actionable plan for investors to alter the course of climate change. \nAgenda\n12 p.m.: Welcome Remarks: James Kelly\, director\, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis \n12:03 p.m.: Speaker Introduction: David Cowen\, president and CEO\, Museum of American Finance \n12:08: p.m.: Presentation: Bruce Usher \n12:45 p.m.: Audience Q&A \n1 p.m.: Closing Remarks: David Cowen \nAbout the Speaker\nBruce Usher is professor of professional practice and the Elizabeth B. Strickler ’86 and Mark T. SUMMARY:Physics & Engineering Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Nick Geiser\, FCRH ’17\, will present\, “What good is string theory? The Math & Physics of Strings.” \nString theory is the most promising candidate for the unification of quantum mechanics and gravity in a mathematically consistent framework. Moreover\, string theory is a well-established conceptual and computational tool that has been applied to a wide range of topics\, including particle physics\, astrophysics\, and pure mathematics. In this talk\, Geiser will present a lightning review of the fundamental theories of quantum mechanics (the standard model of particle physics) and gravity (general relativity) before introducing string theory as a consistent theory of quantum gravity. Geiser will then explore some basic stringy calculations\, encountering several famous mathematical objects\, such as the gamma function and the Riemann zeta function\, along the way. Finally\, Geiser will discuss the stringy origins of the “double-copy” between gauge theory and gravity and its application to colliding black holes. \nThis talk assumes familiarity with calculus (integrals).

SUMMARY:Discussion: Can We Talk About Racism?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Linda McClain about her book Who’s the Bigot? Learning from Conflicts over Marriage and Civil Rights Law. Talking productively about race is a central problem in our divided nation. While some celebrate diversity and inclusion\, others feel excluded and fear being tarred as bigots. The hope spawned by Barack Obama’s election was followed by the angry resentments of Trump’s MAGA followers. \nMcClain’s book traces the themes and rhetoric of prejudice\, bigotry\, ignorance\, and animus in the law and public debate over civil rights\, marriage\, and recognition of the rights of gays and lesbians. The Robert Kent Professor of Law at Boston University and a graduate of the University of Chicago Divinity School\, McClain’s careful history pays close attention to the participation of religious advocates in the developing law. \nMcClain will be joined in conversation by two writers who have reflected on the problems of bias among American Catholics and Latino Americans. LaSalle University Professor of Christian Ethics Maureen O’Connell plumbs her own family’s history in Undoing the Knots Five Generations of American Catholic Anti-Blackness. Tanya Kateri Hernandez too looks inward in her newly published Racial Innocence Unmasking Latino Anti-Black Bias and the Struggle for Equality. The Archibald R. Murray Professor of Law at Fordham\, she is also the author of Multiracials and Civil Rights. \nGeorge Conk\, a senior fellow at Fordham Law\, will moderate.

SUMMARY:Continuing Education: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
DESCRIPTION:Completion of this class will result in the receipt of three (3) continuing education hours. \nApproximately 2.7 million grandparents in the United States are raising their grandchildren without a parent present\, with the majority raised only by the grandmother. The proportions of these grandparents are highest among Black\, Hispanic\, and Native-American families. Data from New York State show 122\,000 grandparents are raising their grandchildren\, and they are doing so informally\, outside of the foster care system. Factors contributing to grandparents’ caregiving include parental substance abuse\, incarceration\, child abuse/maltreatment\, mental illness\, and death. In addition\, when parents are unable to care for their child\, federal child placement laws specify a preference for placement with relatives\, and in most instances\, this is the grandparent. These families face many challenges including financial strain\, psychological and emotional stress\, and transitioning to their new roles. The COVID-19 pandemic further intensified these challenges as it impacted both generations. This workshop\, taught by Carole Cox\, Ph.D.\, will discuss the issues that confront these families and the social work interventions that can assist them. \nAbout the Instructor\nCarole Cox is a professor at the Graduate School of Social Service at Fordham University. She is a Fulbright Scholar and representative of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGGO) to the United Nations. She is the author of eight books and more than 60 chapters and journal articles\, with the majority focusing on older adults. For many years\, she worked specifically with grandparents raising grandchildren\, having developed and facilitated with the NYC Department for the Aging an empowerment training program for these caregivers. The recent COVID-19 pandemic put an extra strain on these families and the empowerment program was offered virtually. The program continues to be offered as it specifically addresses the needs of these families.

SUMMARY:IPED Lecture Series 2022-2023: A More Just Economic System
DESCRIPTION:A growing chorus of economists and politicians is demanding a new paradigm to create a global economy for the common good. In his recent book Cathonomics\, Anthony M. Annett unites insights in economics with those from theology\, philosophy\, climate science\, and psychology\, exposing the failures of neoliberalism while offering us a new model rooted in the wisdom of Catholic social teaching and classical ethical traditions. Drawing from the work of Pope Leo XIII\, Pope Francis\, Thomas Aquinas\, and Aristotle\, Annett applies these teachings to discuss current economic challenges such as inequality\, unemployment and underemployment\, climate change\, and the roles of business and finance. \nAnnett is a Gabelli fellow at Fordham University and a senior adviser at the Sustainable Development Solutions Network. He has a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University and spent two decades at the International Monetary Fund\, where he worked as a speechwriter to the managing director. He is also a member of the College of Fellows of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology.
