DESCRIPTION:Join the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs for a webinar with Michel Maietta\, director of the Inter-Agency Research and Analysis Network (IARAN)\, on COVID-19 and the implications for the humanitarian sector. Maietta will discuss how this crisis can be an opportunity to accelerate necessary transformations for humanitarian actors to fit for the future. \nMaietta is a strategic foresight professional\, with expertise in strategy and organizational design and two decades of experience in the humanitarian and development sector. Maietta\, former director of strategy at Save the Children International and Action Against Hunger\, founded and facilitates the Interagency Research and Analysis Network. \nIn addition to his work for aid organizations\, Maietta has been designing ad hoc training courses for humanitarian and development leaders for over a decade\, teaching at Science Po\, Deakin\, Federico II Universities\, and in the Futuribles and IRIS Think Tanks\, and training the humanitarian workers of tomorrow. When Maietta is not conducting custom pieces of foresight work\, he leads strategic and transformational projects. \nMaietta will discuss the results of a scenarios analysis for the pandemic crisis and its impact on the humanitarian sector. He is the country head of Italy and head of government coverage for EMEA. \nFrom September 2001 to July 2004\, Domenico was director general of the Italian Treasury\, then became Italian minister of economy and finance (July 2004 to September 2005). In this capacity he was also a member of the Eurogroup of the European Council of Economy and Finance Ministers\, member of the G-7 and G-8\, and governor of the IMF. \nDomenico sits on the Board of HEC (Paris) and has been a Board member of the Grosvenor Group in London\, of the Board of Eni\, Telecom Italia\, and other companies. \nHe is chairman of Fondazione Luigi Einaudi (Torino)\, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (Milano)\, and chairman of the Council for the United States and Italy. \nDomenico developed a successful academic career at Cambridge\, Louvain la Neuve\, Johns Hopkins\, and at Torino University. SUMMARY:Epidemic and the Marginalized of Society: A View from the Jewish Past
DESCRIPTION:During times of pandemic\, societies often seek a scapegoat—sometimes in a foreign enemy\, sometimes among their own marginalized groups. In 19th century Eastern Europe\, a peculiar magical ritual emerged in which Jewish communities married their most vulnerable and marginalized members—orphans\, beggars\, and people with physical and cognitive disabilities—to each other in a wedding held in the town cemetery. What was the meaning of this ritual? Why was a wedding in a cemetery considered an efficacious remedy for cholera and other diseases? This talk considers whether Jewish society’s outcasts served as a scapegoat during times of catastrophe such as epidemics. \nNatan M. Meir is the Lorry I. Lokey Professor of Judaic Studies in the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at Portland State University. A scholar of the social and cultural history of East European Jewry\, he is the author of Kiev\, Jewish Metropolis: A History\, 1859-1914 (2010) and Stepchildren of the Shtetl: The Destitute\, Disabled\, and Mad of Jewish Eastern Europe\, 1800-1939 (forthcoming in August 2020). DESCRIPTION:Fordham University’s Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA)\, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations\, is unveiling the compendium of the lecture series\, titled “A Skein of Thought: The Ireland At Fordham Humanitarian Lecture Series” through a public virtual event. The series will first be published as an eBook\, with print to follow in the near future. \nAccompanying the book’s release\, IIHA and the Permanent Mission of Ireland will be hosting a panel discussion\, providing an opportunity to reflect upon the broad ranging challenges facing the humanitarian space today and how these issues may be addressed by the United Nations and its member states. The panel will include the following distinguished speakers: Richard Blewitt\, permanent observer for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC); Rena Ghelani\, director of operations\, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA); H.E. Mansour Ayyad Al-Otaibi\, permanent representative of Kuwait to the United Nations; and D.G. Ruarí de Búrca\, director general of Irish Aid. \nPanelists will also respond to the final lecture of the Ireland at Fordham Humanitarian Lecture Series by Tánaiste Simon Coveney TD\, which will be available for viewing on Thursday\, June 11. The panel discussion will be followed by an interactive Q&A session and we invite all to post questions to the panelists. \nThis lineup of humanitarian leaders binds the book to the contemporary world and asks audiences to dissect their humanitarian efforts to create better strategies. DESCRIPTION:The St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine\, located in Saint Augustine\, Florida is delighted to present its inaugural webinar\, a presentation by George Demacopoulos\, Ph.D.\, titled “Augustine and the Orthodox: The ‘West’ in the East\,” on the Feast of Saint Augustine of Hippo. \nThis event is hosted by the Saint Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine and Fordham. The free broadcast will be livestreamed and open to all\, although pre-registration is required. The event will include live audience questions. For those who miss the live event\, the Shrine will archive this unique event on its website and Facebook page. The webinar is part of a dual observance shared between the Saint Photios Shrine and Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint Augustine. Both Orthodox Christians and Roman Catholics celebrate the memory of the prolific theologian of the fourth century\, Saint Augustine of Hippo\, though on different days. His legacy in Eastern and Western Christian traditions is markedly different. On August 28\, the observance of the saint’s memory in the Roman Catholic Church\, the Diocese of Saint Augustine will reciprocate in events as yet to be determined. \nAbout George Demacopulos\, Ph.D. \nGeorge Demacopoulos\, Ph.D.\, is the Father John Meyendorff and Patterson Family Chair of Orthodox Christian Studies at Fordham. Along with Aristotle Papanikolaou\, Ph.D.\, Demacopoulos co-founded the Orthodox Christian Studies Center at Fordham\, which is the only research university-based center of Orthodox studies in the United States. The Center offers an interdisciplinary minor in Orthodox Christian Studies and a host of research-related initiatives that are bringing the insights of the history\, thought\, and culture of Orthodox Christianity into a broader academic conversation. In 2010\, Demacopoulos was named an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate\, Didaskalos tous Genous (Teacher of the Nation)\, and now serves as the historian for the Order of St. Andrew. \nAbout St. Augustine\, (Commemorated June 15 on the Orthodox Christian Calendar)\nSt. Augustine was born in the city of Thagaste in northern Africa. He was raised by his mother\, St. Monica (May 4)\, and he received his education at Carthage. In the capacity of professor of rhetoric\, Augustine arrived at Milan\, Italy where St. Ambrose (December 7) was bishop. Under the guidance of St Ambrose\, Augustine studied the Holy Scriptures. \nThe Word of God produced in his soul a radical crisis; he accepted holy Baptism\, gave all his wealth to the poor and was tonsured as a monk. In the year 391\, Valerian\, Bishop of Hippo\, ordained St. Augustine a priest\, and in 395\, appointed him vicar bishop of Hippo. After the death of Bishop Valerian\, St. Augustine took his place. During his 35 years as bishop\, St Augustine wrote many works devoted to combating the Donatist\, Manichaean\, and Pelagian heresies. \nSt. Augustine wrote many works—according to his student and biographer Possidias\, the number approached 1030. Of his works the best known are: The City of God (De civitate Dei)\, The Confessions\, 17 Books Against the Pelagians\, and Handbook of Christian Knowledge (The Enchiridion). St. Augustine was concerned above all else that his writings be intelligent and edifying. It is better\, he said\, for them to condemn our grammar\, than for people not to understand. SUMMARY:From HIV/AIDS Epidemic to Pride Shabbat
DESCRIPTION:Liturgical Cultural Transformations in Progressive Judaism: A Conversation Between Elazar Ben Lulu and Deborah Megdal \nWhen the AIDS epidemic hit the United States\, the American Reform Jewish community was the only formal Jewish institution to respond\, advocating an open discussion about congregants who lived with HIV or had AIDS. In 1985\, the General Assembly of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC) passed a historic resolution calling to abolish discrimination against HIV positive people. Elazar Ben Lulu and Deborah Megdal will discuss liturgical and cultural transformations that arose from the HIV/AIDS crisis—from the new needs for personal and social mourning that resulted in the recognition and inclusion of the American gay Jewish community\, to lasting effects\, such as the creation of LGBTQ congregations\, Pride Shabbat celebrations\, and more. \nAbout the Speakers \nElazar Ben Lulu holds a Ph.D. in social and cultural anthropology. As an anthropologist of religion and gender\, he is particularly interested in the intersection of LGBTQ identities and Judaism. His Ph.D. dissertation examines religious rituals in Israeli Reform Jewish congregations and demonstrates how rituals become political performances that affirm and empower gender and sexual minorities previously excluded from Jewish liturgy and the Jewish community. He is the recipient of the Salo Baron New Voices in Jewish Studies Award from the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies\, Columbia University\, and Fordham University’s Center for Jewish Studies. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Azrieli Center for Israel Studies at The Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. \nDeborah Megdal holds a J.D. from Yale Law School\, where she was managing editor of the Yale Journal of Law and Feminism and worked on an amicus brief to the Ninth Circuit in the case that legalized same-sex marriage in California—the case which became Hollingsworth v. Perry before the U.S. Supreme Court. She also worked in impact litigation at Lambda Legal; researched gender in the military; and in family law\, helped low-income clients struggling with issues of domestic violence and child custody. She is currently a rising fifth-year rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York\, and the senior Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical intern at Congregation Beit Simchat Torah (CBST)\, which was founded in 1973\, and welcomes gay men\, lesbians\, bisexuals\, transgender\, queer\, and straight individuals and families who share common values. \nQuestions? She\, among other activities\, headed Lehman Brothers’ Global Finance practice for Northern Europe. \nIn 2015\, Kiechel co-founded Youthonomics\, an index which ranks countries according to youth-friendliness. \nIn 2019\, she founded Global Sovereign Advisory\, an independent structure providing holistic advice to states and state-owned enterprises on public policy and financial matters. \nKiechel graduated from HEC and Sankt Gallen; and holds a master’s degree in mathematics. \nAbout Andrea Mennillo \nAndrea holds a B.S. in business from Federico II University in Naples and a B.S. in international banking from University of Lecce. He also is an alumnus of INSEAD Graduate School. He has almost 30 years of leadership experience\, mostly in financial institutions and infrastructure funds worldwide. \nHe has acted as chairman\, managing director\, and board member in banks\, insurance companies\, and financial conglomerates in Italy\, Spain\, France\, Germany\, Portugal\, the United Kingdom\, and Switzerland. After Cassa Depositi e Prestiti\, where he was appointed by the Ministry of Finance of Italy\, he founded IDA Capital\, an investment firm that operates in the fastest-growing countries and focuses on business diplomacy. \nAndrea is the parent of Francesco Mennillo\, GSB ’16\, and past chair of International Parents Leadership Council. Dame Averil is one of the world’s most accomplished scholars of late antiquity and Byzantium\, with major contributions to our understanding of early Christian historical writing\, devotion to the Theotokos\, and the intersection of Christianity with the Roman Empire. While teaching at Kings College London  from 1965 until 1994\, she founded the Centre for Hellenic Studies and served as the editor for the Journal of Roman Studies. In 1994\, she was elected warden of Keble College\, Oxford\, a position she held until her retirement in 2010. She is the author or editor of more than twenty books and\, among her many honors\, she was named “Commander of the Order of the British Empire” in 1999 and “Dame Commander” in 2006. She has recently written on contemporary appeals to the Byzantine heritage and the concept of orthodoxy in Byzantium. A career diplomat\, Ambassador Massolo was the coordinator of the Italian intelligence community from 2012 to 2016\, the Prime Minister’s personal representative\, Sherpa\, for the G-8 and G-20 Summits in 2008 to 2009\, and the secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2007-2012. He is an adjunct professor of national security and international relations studies both at the School of Government of the LUISS University in Rome and at Sciences Po’s Paris School of International Affairs. He regularly contributes on international and security matters to the newspaper La Stampa. \nAbout Andrea Mennillo \nAndrea holds a B.S. in business from Federico II University in Naples and a B.S. in international banking from University of Lecce. He also is an alumnus of INSEAD Graduate School. He has almost 30 years of leadership experience\, mostly in financial institutions and infrastructure funds worldwide. \nHe has acted as chairman\, managing director\, and board member in banks\, insurance companies\, and financial conglomerates in Italy\, Spain\, France\, Germany\, Portugal\, the United Kingdom\, and Switzerland. After Cassa Depositi e Prestiti\, where he was appointed by the Ministry of Finance of Italy\, he founded IDA Capital\, an investment firm that operates in the fastest-growing countries and focuses on business diplomacy. \nAndrea is the parent of Francesco Mennillo\, GSB ’16\, and past chair of International Parents Leadership Council. SUMMARY:IPED Summer Lecture Series: Leading with a Conversation on Race with Nikko Viquiera\, IPED ’13\, of RaceForward
DESCRIPTION:With the ongoing #BlackLivesMatter protests and calls for the abolition of police and prisons at the forefront\, this one hour session will amplify the importance of talking about race and racism\, not just as a moral imperative\, but as a strategic tool for advancing racial justice in our communities and institutions. \nThroughout this conversation\, we will: \n\ntalk about why it’s important to be race explicit and intersectional in our individual and institutional conversations\ndig into the construction of race on Turtle Island (what indigenous folks call the United States)\, and its implications for the racial disparities we see today\ntalk about the distinctions between modern institutional terms such as diversity\, inclusion\, and equity\, and what they mean for the fight for racial justice\ntalk about some concrete shifts we can make towards de-centering whiteness and advancing racial equity within the U.S. and the rest of the world\n\nAs senior trainer for the movement and capacity building team of RaceForward\, Viquiera facilitates racial justice trainings for people who want to advance racial equity within their institutions.
