SUMMARY:Students Map Genes on Zebrafish Embryos
DESCRIPTION:(Photos by Tom Stoelker)Junior Jessica Caushi admits to not having the steadiest hands. It’s a condition she thought would immediately disqualify her from working in the lab of Alma Rodenas-Ruano\, Ph.D.\, assistant professor of neuroscience in the Department of Natural Sciences at Fordham College at Lincoln Center. There\, Caushi dissects zebrafish embryos. \n“I went into a lab telling Doctor Rodenas that I have shaky hands and thinking that that was just going to be curtains for me and I wasn’t going to be able to do it\,” said Caushi. \nShe credited Rodenas-Ruano with giving her just the right balance of guidance and autonomy in the lab for her to gain confidence. \n“Not everyone is going to hold your hand along the way\, so when you’re put in an environment where you have to work by yourself\, you practice a lot—and yes\, sit there and get frustrated—but you have to work through it and figure out how best to maneuver\,” she said. “But I think being able to accomplish these experiments has definitely allowed me to consider surgical options for my career that I wouldn’t have thought about before.” \nRodenas-Ruano said as difficult as dissection can be\, it’s not as hard as the actual science. \n“They [the students]are building their fine motor skills and they are amazing at it\, but that’s the easy part\,” said Rodenas-Ruano. “The hard part is being able to do biochemical and molecular experiments in an accurate and reproducible way\,  to measure levels of gene expression and what that gene associates with that could regulate it.” \nRodenas-Ruano tasked Caushi and her partner in the lab\, Eveline Murphy-Wilson\, with creating an epigenetic map of the KCC2 Chloride transporter in neurons in developing zebrafish. In other words\, they are using developmental neuroscience with the zebrafish to look into the mechanisms behind the nervous system. \nIn the nervous system\, there are excitatory and inhibitory neurons\, explained Caushi. Excitatory neurons allow information to flow\, in the form of electrical activity\, through the brain. Inhibitory neurons regulate or quench that electrical signal when appropriate. Initially\, all the neurons are excitatory\, but at a critical point in development\, a population of those excitatory neurons become inhibitory. And that is important\, because balance between the excitatory and inhibitory neurons is necessary for normal brain function\, said Caushi. \n“An imbalance could be related to diseases such as autism and epilepsy\,” she said. “It’s important that we study this.” \n \nExamining Fast-Developing Embryos \nThe kcc2 gene triggers the inhibitory neurons. The gene is known as a chloride exporter because it maintains the chloride concentrations inside and outside the cell that are ultimately responsible for neuronal inhibition. Ultimately\, the student researchers are trying to find out what “turns on” this powerful gene. Last summer\, junior Eveline Murphy-Wilson found that the KCC2 gene was turned on at 18 hours after zebrafish is fertilized. \n“The zebrafish have a really quick developmental period\, so we’re able to get a lot of research done in a shorter amount of time than if we were working with mammals\,” said Murphy-Wilson. “They also develop the eggs externally\, so they’re not inside the mom\, which allows us to manipulate them in ways that we wouldn’t be able to work inside mammals.” \nThrough a confocal microscope\, students can follow embryonic development from one cell to two cells to four cells to eight cells and onwards\, said Rodenas-Ruano. Within 16 hours students begin to see what looks like a fish. They switch to a stereomicroscope when they begin dissection and remove the chorion\, the outermost embryo membrane of the embryos. Then it’s off with their heads to get to the brain where microdissection begins. They stain the brain to examine whether there is an expression of proteins important for excitation or inhibition. \nControlling the Process \nIn order to tell how many hours after fertilization that the kcc2 gene turns on\, one must know exactly when fertilization takes place. To do that\, the students attempt to control and observe the process. \nIn nature\, zebrafish mate when the sun rises. But in the small room filled with fish tanks at the Lincoln Center lab\, students control the light cycle. To set up a mating\, they plan the dissections and experiments first and work back from there to select an ideal time for fertilization to take place. It takes about 30 minutes for the female fish to mate and drop her eggs. Then the clock starts ticking on that roughly 18-hour observation period. Students have to think fast so they can examine them at the right time to focus on what turns the kcc2 gene on. \n \nTroubleshooting on the Fly \n“It’s here that critical thinking comes in to play; it means you have this information\, you have these skills\, but in biology\, things aren’t always the same\,” said Rodenas-Ruano. “So they have to think on their feet and modify things\, troubleshoot so that we can make this a good\, reliable experiment that’s going to give us some reproducible\, accurate data.” \nAlma Rodenas-Ruano said that normally this type of research is the type of research done at med schools and Ph.D. programs\, but the Natural Science Department has some very talented undergraduates. \n“These experiments they’re doing are very\, very difficult to do because they require a very specific precision and repetitiveness that also requires skill and knowledge\, all of which they have\,” she said.

SUMMARY:Social Value Investing with Author Howard W. Buffett and Matthew Bishop of the Economist
DESCRIPTION:Social Value Investing presents a new way to approach some of society’s most difficult and intractable challenges. Although many of our world’s problems may seem too great and too complex to solve—inequality\, climate change\, affordable housing\, corruption\, healthcare\, food insecurity—solutions to these challenges do exist\, and will be found through new partnerships bringing together leaders from the public\, private\, and philanthropic sectors. \nDress is business attire and strictly enforced by The University Club. \nAbout the Author: \nHoward W. Buffett is an adjunct associate professor and research scholar at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He served as the executive director of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and coauthored the New York Times best-seller 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World (2013). Previously\, Buffett oversaw economic stabilization programs in Afghanistan and Iraq for the U.S. Department of Defense. He also served as a policy advisor for the White House Domestic Policy Council\, where he co-authored the president’s cross-sector partnership strategy. \nAbout Matthew Bishop: \nMatthew Bishop most recently served at the Rockefeller Foundation as managing director\, focused on taking forward the Foundation’s convening\, networking\, and problem-solving capabilities by expanding the work of The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center. Bishop created a new global institute that brought together diverse voices from around the world to shine a light on big ideas\, and help to rapidly\nimplement scalable solutions to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people. Previously\, he spent more than 25 years at The Economist\, serving in roles such as U.S. Business Editor\, New York Bureau Chief and global business editor. Through a variety of writing\, editorial\, and leadership roles\, he has committed himself to turning good ideas into forceful action. Bishop cofounded the Social Progress\nIndex\, helped to launch the #GivingTuesday campaign\, and was a member of the G8 Taskforce on Social Impact Investing. He is the co-author of several books\, including Philanthrocapitalism: How Giving Can Save the World and The Road From Ruin. Some years ago\, he was honored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. \nThis talk is followed by a reception. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book.

SUMMARY:Investing In Financial Research: A Decision-Making System For Better Results with Cheryl Einhorn
DESCRIPTION:Got financial decisions to make? Learn how to invest in financial research with author Cheryl Einhorn at this book lecture sponsored by the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. \nEvery day\, people around the world make financial decisions. They choose to invest in a stock\, sell their holdings in a mutual fund\, or buy a condominium. These decisions are complex and financially tricky—even for financial professionals. But the literature available on financial research is dated and narrowly focused without any real practical application. Until now there’s been a gap in the literature—a book that shows you how to conduct a step-by-step comprehensive financial investigation that ends in a decision. \nThis book gives you that how. \nInvesting in Financial Research is a guidebook for conducting financial investigations and lays out Cheryl Strauss Einhorn’s AREA Method—a research and decision-making system that uniquely controls for bias\, focuses on the incentives of others and expands knowledge while improving judgement—and applies it to investigating financial situations. AREA is applicable to all sorts of financial sleuthing\, whether for investment analysis or investigative journalism. It allows you to be the expert in your own life. \nFirst 100 attendees will receive a free copy of the book. \nAbout the Author: \nCheryl Strauss Einhorn is the creator of the AREA Method\, a decision making system for individuals and companies to solve complex problems. She is the founder of CSE Consulting and the author of the award-winning book Problem Solved: A Powerful System for Making Complex Decisions with Confidence & Conviction. Einhorn teaches as an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and has won several journalism awards for her investigative stories about international political\, business and economic topics. SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Maureen E. Raymo\, Ph.D.\, Bruce C. Heezen/Lamont Research Professor and director of the Lamont-Doherty Core Repository at Columbia University\, will present\, “Climate\, CO2\, and Sea Level: Past is Prologue.” \nThe Earth is running a fever. The ongoing pollution of our atmosphere by an invisible odorless gas called carbon dioxide is trapping heat at the Earth’s surface and causing temperatures to rise on land and in the ocean. The polar regions are warming fastest of all and the melting ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise around the globe. This talk will review evidence for climate change—natural and human-caused—and explore how ice sheets and sea level changed in the past. How fast the climate changes in the future will depend on our collective actions as individuals\, families\, communities\, and governments.

SUMMARY:Dear Editor: Advice Columns and the Making of the American Yiddish Press
DESCRIPTION:At the turn of the 20th century\, American Yiddish newspapers overflowed with advice columns offering implicit and explicit guidance to readers about how to live their lives. From the Forverts’ famous “A Bintel Brief” to more practical advice columns\, such as Der tog’s “Letter Box” column\, these publications printed countless letters from readers asking editors to help them navigate personal tribulations\, American political infrastructures\, and Jewish communal life. \nEditors and publishers introduced these features to engage and entertain newspaper readers\, as well as to increase circulation. But these features also encouraged audiences previously unaccustomed to reading newspapers to view these publications as central sources for information and guidance about acclimating to American life. Eventually\, these interactions spilled off the page. Yiddish newspapers became so successful at marketing themselves as fountains of advice that they had to create open office hours and hire staff members whose job it was to correspond or meet with readers eager to receive personal counsel from their favorite papers. \nIn this talk\, Ayelet Brinn will explore the crucial role of advice columns in the development of the Yiddish press\, how these columns shaped the relationships between newspapers and their readers\, and how central advice columns became to the acclimation process of new immigrants eager to learn more about American life.\nThis is a joint event of the Center for Jewish Studies at Fordham University and the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University.
