DESCRIPTION:Please join us for breakfast\, networking\, and conversation on family violence\, with a focus on grandparents. \nProfessor Amanda Holt is a criminologist and critical psychologist who will be a visiting professor at Fordham University from the University of Roehampton in the U.K. She has focused much of her research on the problem of child violence toward parents. Her most recent work extends to child and teen violence toward grandparents. She suggests the value of a life-course perspective on family violence. \nInvited guests include practitioners and researchers in the elder justice\, domestic violence\, and grand parenting services communities. We hope to create a climate where we can share our different perspectives on supporting and protecting older caregivers/grandparents both within the NYC service community and globally between the U.S. and the U.K. \nThis event is sponsored by the Ravazzin Center on Aging and Intergenerational Studies.

SUMMARY:GSS Professional Development Workshop: Social Work Careers at the Center for Court Innovation
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Court Innovation (CCI) seeks to help create a more effective and humane justice system. Originally founded as a public/private partnership between the New York State Unified Court System and the Fund for the City of New York\, the Center for Court Innovation creates operating programs to test new ideas and solve problems\, performs original research to determine what works (and what doesn’t)\, and provides expert assistance to justice reformers around the world. \nThe Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES) aims to increase public safety through innovative services that reduce crime and incarceration\, improve behavioral health\, promote recovery and rehabilitation\, and create opportunities for success in the community. \nCCI and CASES will discuss how social workers are integral to criminal justice reform\, how social workers make their programs run\, as well as the challenges and rewards of working in the criminal justice system. They will also discuss current career opportunities at their organizations. \nPresenter Bios: \nGiles Malieckal joined CASES in August 2016 to lead the newly created Manhattan Supervised Release program. He is a clinically trained social worker (LCSW) with over 14 years of experience working in social service settings at the intersections of behavioral health\, child welfare\, homelessness and criminal justice court-based diversion. In addition to currently serving as the Senior Director of Pretrial Services at CASES\, Giles led the Safety Committee of the agency to develop guidelines and procedures to assist both staff and participants. Giles holds a Master’s in Social Work from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service as well as an undergraduate degree in History from Occidental College in Los Angeles. \n** All Professional Development Workshops will be recorded and made available to current GSS students through the GSS youtube channel**

DESCRIPTION:Andrii Iurov\, Ph.D.\, an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Computer Science at the Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York\, will present\, “Temperature-Dependent Plasmons\, Thermal-Convolution Paths\, and Chemical Potential in Tunable Extrinsic Dirac Structures.” \nIn this talk\, Iurov will present and discuss some of their recent results for the finite-temperature plasmons in graphene and other low-dimensional innovative materials in addition to graphene\, such as silicene\, germanene\, and transitional metal dichalcogenides. They have also derived a set of analytical equations to calculate the chemical potential for all these various tunable extrinsic (or doped) Dirac structures and thermal plasmons controlled by different thermal-convolution paths. Furthermore\, they have used the dynamical polarizability and random-phase approximation to study the split plasmon branches in buckled lattices and predicted a unique splitting\, different from that in gapped graphene. Their results are crucial for stimulating new research into electronic\, transport\, and collective properties in the recently discovered lattices\, photovoltaics\, and transistor devices.

SUMMARY:GSS Professional Development Workshop: Working with LGBT Clients—Terminology and Best Practice
DESCRIPTION:This professional development workshop will discuss the basic concepts and terminology surrounding the LGBTQ community. It is for students who are interested in gaining a better understanding of the gender spectrum\, sexual orientation\, and working with clients who are part of the queer community. \nSpeaker Bio: \nEmma Gross\, L.M.S.W.\, is a social worker and clinician working in Manhattan and Brooklyn. She has experience working with homeless\, low-income\, and LGBTQ populations throughout New York City\, providing case management\, individual\, and group therapy services. Emma has also worked with transgender patients and their families\, providing mental health support in outpatient and inpatient medical settings\, and developed a fellowship to provide social work services at Rhode Island Hospital’s transgender medicine clinics. Prior to pursuing her M.S.W.\, Emma spent years working in online communities for queer and gender non-conforming individuals. As part of this work\, she helped to build and manage the Gender Spectrum Lounge\, an online space designed to help connect gender non-conforming young people\, their parents and families\, and the professionals that work with them to in a supportive space for conversation and resource sharing. Emma is passionate about individuals’ right to self-identify and excited about the infinite variety of ways to be a human in the world.

DESCRIPTION:Join Fordham students and the U.K. alumni chapter in welcoming Dominik Duell\, a lecturer at the University of Essex\, for a conversation surrounding women in politics. \nParliaments in democracies surely should reflect the composition of the societies they are elected to represent. The record number of women entering legislatures across democracies around the globe in recent elections can only be welcomed. Beyond giving a group that has been historically excluded from political power more equal access\, it turns out women are more competent politicians\, make better policies for everyone\, and even inspire other women to overcome hurdles in the labor market. This talk shows you how that works. \nAbout the speaker: \nDominik Duell\, Ph.D.\, is a lecturer in the Department of Government at the University of Essex. He studies how our memberships in different social groups affect what we know about politics\, how we vote\, and how we evaluate politicians’ performance. He also writes about how political and economic institutions either create and sustain\, or hinder group-based biases\, stereotypes\, and discrimination. His work has been published in renowned scientific journals in both political science and economics. SUMMARY:Critical Issues Conversations: Staten Island
DESCRIPTION:The four pillars of the community schools strategy are: integrated student supports\, expanded learning time and opportunities\, family and community engagement\, and collaborative leadership and practices. While these concepts are consistently demonstrated in community schools\, how they are lived out day-to-day can vary from district to district and from school to school. As practitioners in the field\, you are the experts in providing the perspective\, gaining the experience\, and sharing demonstrated success in how these pillars are embedded in your school’s programs. With a strong orientation toward the academic success of your students\, we invite you to join us for a day of learning\, sharing\, and networking that will provide you with actionable resources to bring back to your school. \nJoin us for a day of professional conversation facilitated by experienced school leaders who will engage you in critical thinking and active participation. This unique opportunity will allow the participants to lead the learning in a truly collaborative way. Planned topics for this first round of Critical Issues Conversations will include: collaborative leadership\, parental engagement\, relating the community school strategy to the classroom\, and a brief overview of the newly-created\, state-funded Community Schools Technical Assistance Center at Fordham University. \nA certificate of attendance and Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits will be awarded to the attendees.

SUMMARY:GSS Professional Development Workshop: Career Opportunities with Mental Health Providers of Western Queens
DESCRIPTION:This professional development workshop is for bilingual (Spanish/English) social work students interested in clinical work with children\, adolescents\, or adults in mental health or substance abuse. Fay Radding-Mascioli\, M.A.\, R.N.\, will discuss full-time\, part-time\, and fee-for-service psychotherapy opportunities with the Mental Health Providers of Western Queens. \nFay Radding-Mascioli is a community liaison with Mental Health Providers of Western Queens. Fay started her career as a teacher of English as a second language\, providing language and job interviewing skills to Mexican migrant workers and newly arrived refugees from Vietnam. Later\, after several years in personnel recruitment\, she returned to school and transitioned to health care as a nurse working in psychiatry. When she moved to New York\, she joined the Mental Health Providers of Western Queens as the director of managed care\, leveraging her experience in business and mental health. Prior to her rejoining the Mental Health Providers of Western Queens as a community liaison in 2013\, she held positions in nonprofit organizations serving diverse populations including family caregivers\, post-9/11 veterans\, and the home-bound elderly. \nShe has two degrees from the University of Michigan: a B.A. in linguistics and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan’s School of Education with a focus on community development. She obtained her nursing degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
