SUMMARY:Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Art+Feminism
DESCRIPTION:This event is designed to improve coverage of women to mitigate the gender gap on Wikipedia. The edit-a-thon will include tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian\, ongoing editing support\, reference materials\, and refreshments. This event is free\, and people of all gender identities and expressions are encouraged to participate. \nWikipedia is the largest knowledge base on the planet and although Wikipedia is the fifth-most visited website\, its lack of diverse race and gender content reflects the homogeneity of its editors. In a 2018 survey\, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female (see the “Gender bias on Wikipedia” entry). Fewer than 17% of the biographies on Wikipedia are of women. \nParticipate in this edit-a-thon and help increase the coverage of women on Wikipedia.

SUMMARY:Alumni Chapter of New Jersey: Author Peter Quinn\, GSAS ’74\, College Club Talk
DESCRIPTION:Peter Quinn\, “New York Paddy\,” author and Fordham Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Class of 1974 alumnus\, will discuss the Irish in America. \nIn 1979\, Quinn was appointed to the staff of Governor Hugh Carey as chief speechwriter. He continued in that role under Governor Mario Cuomo\, helping craft the governor’s 1984 Democratic Convention speech and his address on religion and politics at Notre Dame University. Quinn joined Time Inc. as chief speechwriter in 1985 and retired as corporate editorial director for Time Warner at the end of 2007. \nHis 1994 novel Banished Children of Eve won a 1995 American Book Award. Looking for Jimmy: In Search of Irish America\, a collection of non-fiction pieces\, was published in 2007. National Book Award-winner Colum McCann has summed up Quinn’s trilogy of historical detective novels—Hour of the Cat (2005)\, The Man Who Never Returned (2010)\, and Dry Bones (2013)—as “generous and agile and profound.” All his books are currently in print and available from The Overlook Press.

SUMMARY:Crispina and Her Sisters: An Evening with Christine Schenk
DESCRIPTION:In her acclaimed book Crispina and Her Sisters\, author Christine Schenk\, C.S.J.\, explores the history of women’s roles in early Christianity\, as well as the authority that women exercised in the ancient church. Looking closely at the visual imagery found on the burial artifacts of these early Christian women\, Schenk demonstrates how they and those around them regarded them as influential leaders within the church. \nJoin us for an evening of dialogue and conversation with Schenk\, where we will delve into this fascinating history and ask what it means for Christian communities today. As a columnist for the National Catholic Reporter and the retired co-founder of FutureChurch\, Schenk brings to Fordham wisdom and experience in talking about the role of women in the church. \nThis event is complimentary.

SUMMARY:Physics and Engineering Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Jason Bini\, Ph.D.\, associate research scientist at Yale University and a Fordham alum (FCRH ’06)\, will present “Positron Emission Tomography: From Antimatter to Medical Imaging.” \nThe positron\, first theorized by Paul Dirac in 1928 and later experimentally confirmed by Carl David Anderson (1936 Nobel Prize)\, has unique properties that have been harnessed to create a powerful imaging technique that is utilized to understand human physiology and disease. The lecture will survey a number of aspects where physics and engineering principles are harnessed to create and understand 3D images of living beings and possible future advancements in this field. Bini will also touch on a few concrete examples of how\, in his own research\, he is harnessing positron emission tomography to understand the pathophysiology of diabetes and obesity.

SUMMARY:Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Celebrating Women's History

SUMMARY:Salo Baron New Voices in Jewish Studies: Noam Shoked
DESCRIPTION:In the news\, the conversation about the Israeli–Palestinian conflict often revolves around the settlements built in the West Bank\, which Israel conquered from Jordan in 1967. Very little\, however\, is said about the actual design and construction of the settlements and their relationship to Zionism\, as well as to the tradition of modernist architecture that developed in Israel. \nThis talk looks at the design of one of the first settlements built in the West Bank\, at a time when Israelis were still debating the administrative fate of the occupied territories. While government officials were hesitant to populate the West Bank with Israelis\, activists advocated for building settlements\, whether out of a desire to be close to Biblical sites or to be close to Arab culture. Meanwhile\, professional architects preferred ignoring the West Bank. This talk examines the debates that emerged between these different groups and the architectural forms that resulted from those debates. It takes the case of the Jewish settlement of Hebron in order to show how a political landscape that we take for granted today came about in contingent and unexpected ways.
