SUMMARY:Leave Me Alone With the Recipes: The Life\, Art and Cookbook of Cipe Pineles
DESCRIPTION:October 17-January 21\nOpening reception and book signing with editors Sarah Rich and Wendy \nMacNaughton:\nTuesday\, October 17\, 2017 6-8pm\nCurators: Wendy MacNaughton and Sarah Rich Exhibition Advisor: Debbie Millman\nExhibition Coordinator: Abby Goldstein \nBehind every celebrated work of art\, there are innumerable others that never see the light of day. Such was the case with the hand-painted cookbook of Cipe Pineles\, which sat unopened for decades a er her death until it landed at an antique book fair\, where an artist and an editor spo ed its breathtaking contents and gave it a spotlight in the new book\, Leave Me Alone With the Recipes: The Life\, Art and Cookbook of Cipe Pineles (Bloomsbury\, 2017). \nPineles was a 20th-century art director and graphic designer whose in uence has touched generations\, though few people know her name. In the 1940s\, as the rst female art director at Conde Nast\, Pineles helped launch Seventeen Magazine\, and in doing so\, created an entirely new media category dedicated to young women. She was the rst to hire ne artists for magazine illustration\, among them Andy Warhol\, who once called her his favorite art director. \nConcurrently in 1945\, Pineles was privately painting her mother’s Eastern European Jewish recipes in vibrant gouache on the pages of a sketchbook she kept at home. Borscht\, roast chicken\, goulash and kugel accompany stunning\, hand-lettered instructions—a handmade cookbook that never reached publication\, until now. \nFordham University is pleased to present Cipe Pineles: Leave Me Alone With the Recipes\, an exhibition of selected works from the new book\, along with archival materials that take the viewer along on the process of publication design and art direction under one of the great creative minds of the time. Join us in celebrating Cipe—a woman\, an immigrant\, a hidden gure in the history of design.\nLeave Me Alone with the Recipes will available for purchase at the opening reception. | cipepineles.com Hors d’oeuvres by Russ & Daughters.

SUMMARY:Behind the Crime: Interview with a White Collar Felon
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of the hows and whys of white collar crime led by former prosecutor and professor of law at the U. of St. Thomas Law School\, Hank Shea\, and featuring Columbia Law School graduate\, former international finance attorney and ex-offender\, Leigh Sprague. In the latter part of his career\, Mr. Sprague held executive positions in the employ of Russia’s richest oligarchs. As a result of “going native”\, an addiction and resulting poor decisions\, Mr. Sprague stole money from a Russian billionaire and was forced to flee Russia for a life on the run. After conviction in the US and serving a 50 month prison sentence\, Mr. Sprague now writes and talks about his experience in hopes of helping others learn from his mistakes and avoid stumbling down the same sort of slippery slope.

SUMMARY:Mass Incarceration and Violence: Are We Over-Punishing Violent Offenders?
DESCRIPTION:The King’s College has partnered with Fordham’s Center for Ethics Education to discuss whether or not we are over-punishing violent offenders. \nNearly 2.3 million men and women are currently incarcerated in America’s jails and prisons\, 88% of which are in state prisons. According recent data\, approximately 53% of all state prisoners are in prison for violent offenses. Reducing prison populations in the future will require that we reconceptualize why and how we prosecute violence. \nJoin us at the Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus on Thursday\, October 12 to hear an exclusive conversation among America’s leading criminal justice professors—Douglas Husak\, Professor of Philosophy and Law at Rutgers University and Barry Latzer is Emeritus Professor of Criminal Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice\, CUNY—on the facts of the national prison population and new solutions for prosecuting and sentencing violent offenders.

SUMMARY:Theology and the War on Terror
DESCRIPTION:Is there such a thing as a theological thriller? \nJoin theologian\, philosopher of religion\, and counterterrorism adviser Gwen Griffith-Dickson\, Ph.D.\, for a discussion of her riveting new novel Bleedback. Griffith-Dickson—a visiting professor at King’s College London\, the president of the Lokahi Foundation\, and a parent of a Fordham senior—is a leading figure in the British counterterrorism scene. She has worked supportively with Muslim communities and government\, and she helped prevent a terrorist attack through one of her projects. \n Bleedback immerses the reader in the conflicts of the war on terror and the many questions it raises for our time. What is it that makes people turn to terrorism? What really drives the war on terror—global politics or the sordid business of profit-making? Should spiritual leaders get involved in politics for the sake of peacemaking\, or should religion be kept out of politics and security? Can terrorists have a change of heart—and do they merit forgiveness if they do? \nPatrick Hornbeck\, Ph.D.\, chair of the Department of Theology\, will discuss these questions and more with Griffith-Dickson. And thanks to the generosity of a Department of Theology donor\, all who register for this event will receive a free copy of Bleedback. \nThis event is presented by Fordham University’s Department of Theology and Office of Alumni Relations. \n\nQuestions?
