SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion: "Wallah - Je te jure"
DESCRIPTION:Wallah – Je te jure tells the stories of men and women traveling along West African migration routes to Italy. Senegal’s rural villages\, Niger’s bus stations and “ghettos” full of traffickers\, Italian squares and houses are the backdrops of these courageous trips\, which often end in tragedy. No matter the cost\, the goal to reach Europe will be achieved\, “Wallah.”
But there are those who\, tired from the journey\, turn back home. \nDirector Marcello Merletto\, journalist Ilaria Sesana and Brendan Cahill\, Director of the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham\, will discuss the film and the humanitarian crisis that prompted it.

SUMMARY:GSAS Centennial Lecture: Democracy and Its Discontents
DESCRIPTION:America is a young nation but a very old republic. It is\, in fact\, the world’s oldest constitutional democracy. How did that happen? \nAmerican democracy is not simply the product of the genius of the founding fathers (and mothers) but rather the work of generations. It has had inherent problems and faced daunting challenges but over the centuries it has endured and expanded its scope and scale. \nToday it confronts new dangers — economic\, technological and above all political — and must find a way to combat and overcome them. The stakes are high. \nKeynote Speaker: Fareed Zakaria\, Ph.D.\nFareed Zakaria is host of CNN’s flagship international affairs program — Fareed Zakaria GPS — a Washington Post columnist\, a contributing editor at The Atlantic and a New York Times bestselling author. He was described in 1999 by Esquire Magazine as “the most influential foreign policy adviser of his generation.” In 2010\, foreign policy named him one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers. \nThis lecture celebrates Fordham’s Dodransbicentennial and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Centennial. \nRSVP here: https://form.jotform.com/60214573573959

SUMMARY:Strangers Drowning: A Lecture and Conversation with Larissa MacFarquhar
DESCRIPTION:SOCIAL INNOVATION invites you to meet Larissa MacFarquhar on April 19th\, 6 PM-7:30 PM at Freeman Hall\, Fordham Rose Hill. \nCharity may begin at home\, but where should it end? Should we help the worst off\, wherever they may be\, or should we take care of our family and our own people first? Is need more vital than loyalty? How important are the ties of place and community? Should we help strangers even at the expense of people we love? Larissa MacFarquhar will consider these questions by telling the stories of people who live lives of extraordinary moral commitment—for whom these issues are not theoretical but acutely real. \nLarissa MacFarquhar is the author of Strangers Drowning: Impossible Idealism\, Drastic Choices\, and the Urge to Help\, which came out in paperback last year. Since 1998 she has been a staff writer at The New Yorker magazine\, where her profile subjects have included Barack Obama\, Noam Chomsky\, Derek Parfit\, and Hillary Mantel.
