SUMMARY:School Superintendent's Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:The Graduate School of Education at Fordham Westchester is hosting a Superintendents Breakfast with special guest speaker Amelio A. D’Onofrio\, PhD\, Clinical Professor & Director of the Psychological Services Institute at Fordham University. \nDr. D’Onofrio will be speaking on Being a Kid in the 21st Century: How the Pressures of Contemporary Life Can Lead to Disconnection\, Despair\, and Violence. \nBeing a kid in 2017 is vastly different from life just a few short decades ago. Parental stress\, materialism\, the ubiquity and influence of technology\, pressure to achieve\, perfectionism\, uncertainly about the future\, and other toxic cultural influences are creating a generation of disconnected and unhappy kids. Some of these kids are not only disconnected from others but from themselves and occasionally offer vague complaints of “something missing inside.” They lack enthusiasm and a sense of purpose and\, when despair sets in\, their depression\, anxiety\, and anger can turn to violence toward others or toward oneself through self-injury or suicide. In this presentation\, we will explore how the contemporary landscape of childhood can cultivate despair in vulnerable children and how school personnel can identify problems and compassionately engage these children to help transform their sense of emptiness to one of hope.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Moral Stress and Spiritual Struggles
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores crises that make people feel fearful or shameful about causing harm\, generating moral stress. Such stress often involves conflicting values. For example\, health crises can involve shame about not taking care of one’s health\, and fearful conflicts over the financial vs. health costs of seeking or not seeking health care. Chaplains\, religious leaders\, and clinicians can easily experience moral stress over providing client/spiritual care while complying with health plans/organizations that limit time with those needing care. Many people experience conflicts in balancing family\, professional\, and financial responsibilities. These conflicting values and associated emotions like shame\, fear\, and guilt may be part of automatic\, stress-based moral/spiritual orienting systems shaped by family/cultural systems (like racism\, sexism\, classism\, and heterosexism) that heighten individual responsibility for causing harm. \nParticipants will explore their own experiences of moral stress and identify calming practices that foster self-compassion. Illustrations\, self-reflection\, and roles plays will be used to identify spiritual practices fostering self-compassion. Participants will reflect on how to identify and use spiritual practices to live out values and beliefs about goodness\, compassion\, and love.

SUMMARY:"Mama Hajji" or the Christian Family Hajj to Jerusalem
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Valentina Izmirlieva\, Associate Professor of Slavic Languages\, Columbia University \nThe protagonists of this lecture are Orthodox Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem who took as their model the Muslim Hajj to Mecca. These paradoxical pilgrims from the European part of the Ottoman Empire called themselves “hajjis\,” using an Islamic honorific\, but insisted on their Eastern Orthodox identity and the Orthodox ethos of their quest. While the Christian Hajj to Jerusalem emerged as an Ottoman phenomenon already in the 17th century\, in the early 19th century it underwent a significant transformation. The hajjis began to travel “family style\,” taking along not only their wives and male children\, but also their elderly mothers and unmarried daughters of all ages. Despite the dangers of the long trip\, some took their new brides on a honeymoon pilgrimage so that their first child would be conceived in Jerusalem\, and some even took their pregnant wives so that they would give birth in the Holy Land. The Orthodox Hajj to Jerusalem thus emerged as a family project and a surprising vehicle for female mobility\, creativity\, and empowerment. This talk will explore how this transformation occurred and why.

SUMMARY:Bursting into Song in the Hollywood Musical
