SUMMARY:Out of the Flames: Preserving the Manuscript Heritage of Endangered Syriac Christianity in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Dr. Columba Stewart\, OSB\, Professor of Theology and Director of the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library (HMML) at St. John’s University\, Collegeville\, MN \nThe Syriac Christians of Mesopotamia (modern Iraq\, Syria\, and southeast Turkey) are among the most vulnerable of minority cultures in the current middle eastern crisis. Their culture is ancient and its manuscript heritage is among the richest in the Christian world. This lecture will describe the significance of Syriac Christianity as a counterpoint to historically dominant Greek and Latin Christian cultures\, with a particular focus on the manuscripts that embody and represent Syriac heritage. It will also describe current efforts to preserve and share those precious manuscript witnesses in the face of determined efforts to destroy them.

SUMMARY:"The Long Loneliness in Baltimore": Stories of Viva House and a Half Century of life with The Catholic Worker
DESCRIPTION:Brendan Walsh\, a former seminarian\, and Willa Bickham\, a former member of the Sisters of St. Joseph\, established Viva House\, a Catholic Worker House of Hospitality in Baltimore\, 47 years ago and have run it continuously ever since\, devoting their lives to the hallowed and holy enterprise of bearing witness. Their book\, The Long Loneliness in Baltimore\, offers a view of the city few people have seen\, including many who have lived there. In addition to providing a historical overview\, the book presents poignant vignettes\, moments of revelation that illuminate the life of the neighborhood and the plight of the poor—not just the poor of Baltimore\, but those across our country who struggle to survive in the merciless environment of the modern American city. Brendan’s unflinching narrative and Willa’s delicately rendered illustrations of daily life give a face and a name to the anonymous poor and depict the challenges they face. Their stories attest to the lives\, the courage and the wisdom encountered in ordinary people.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Religious Nationalism in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
DESCRIPTION:The Israeli-Palestinian conflict was born out of competing nationalisms in the same land\, and to a large extent it remains a struggle over land and rights. However\, the events of 1967 and 1979 in the Middle East catalyzed the latent forces of religious nationalism\, further complicating the unresolved conflict between two peoples in the land from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. \nRoss Brann is the Milton R. Konvitz Professor of Judeo-Islamic Studies and the Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell University. He is the author of The Compunctious Poet: Cultural Ambiguity and Hebrew Poetry in Muslim Spain (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 1991)\, recipient of the National Jewish Book Award for Sefardic Studies; and of Power in the Portrayal: Representations of Muslims and Jews in Islamic Spain (Princeton University Press\, 2002). \nBrann has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies of the University of Pennsylvania\, and he was elected as a Fellow by the American Academy for Jewish Research. Brann is also the editor of four volumes and author of many essays on the intersection of Jewish and Islamic culture. He is currently completing his newest publication\, Andalusi Moorings: Al-Andalus and Sefarad as Cultural Tropes (University of Pennsylvania Press\, forthcoming). \nThis is a joint event hosted by the Department of History\, the Jewish Studies program\, and the Middle East Studies program. \nFor more information\, contact Magda Teter\, Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies at 347-364-3472 or jewishstudies@fordham.edu. \nFor additional information\, please visit fordham.edu/jewishstudies.

SUMMARY:Multiple Legal Views: A Comparison of the Methods of Early Modern Christian Legal Scholars and Rabbi Joseph Caro\, Author of the Standard Code of Jewish Law (Shulhan Arukh)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Edward Fram of Ben-Gurion University will discuss how legal humanists proposed to deal with legal conundrums\, comparing their approaches to those used by their contemporary Rabbi Joseph Caro\, who created would become the standard code of Jewish law (Shulhan Arukh). \nBy Roman times\, it was already clear that there was a need for guidance on how to decide between multiple legal views. A solution was offered by the lex citationum\, or the laws of citations\, which was included in the Theodosian Code. The laws gave rules as to which views should be followed in which situations. In the late 15th and 16th centuries\, with learned law assuming an ever greater role in the life of towns\, European jurists too faced a plethora of legal views. This lecture by Professor Edward Fram of Ben-Gurion University will discuss how legal humanists proposed dealing with these legal conundrums\, comparing their approaches to those used by their contemporary Rabbi Joseph Caro\, who created what would become the standard code of Jewish law (Shulhan Arukh). \nFram’s lecture will be followed by a response by Fordham University’s Ethan J. Leib\, professor of law\, and W. David Myers\, professor of history. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Tsvi Blanchard\, the Meyer Struckmann Professor of Jewish Law at the Humboldt Faculty of Law in Berlin. \nAbout the Main Speaker\nEdward Fram is a professor of Jewish history at Ben Gurion University of the Negev. His research interests lie in developments in Jewish law in mid-16th century Eastern Europe\, with a particular emphasis on attempts to codify rabbinic law. He is the author of three books\, Ideals Face Reality: Jewish Law and Life in Poland\, 1550-1655 (1997); My Dear Daughter: Rabbi Benjamin Slonik and the Education of Jewish Women in Sixteenth-Century Poland (2007); and A Window on Their World: The Court Diary of Rabbi Hayyim Gundersheim\, Frankfurt am Main\, 1773-1794 (2012). \nThis event is cosponsored by Fordham’s Jewish Studies program and the Institute on Religion\, Law\, and Lawyer’s Work at Fordham Law School. \nFor more information\, contact Professor Magda Teter\, the Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studie at 347-364-3472 or jewishstudies@fordham.edu. \nFor additional information\, please visit www.fordham.edu/jewishstudies.
