SUMMARY:Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon : Fordham at 175
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Fordham’s Dodransbicentennial Celebration\, the general topic for the Edit-a-Thon will be the history of Fordham. But in keeping with the spirit of the Edit-a-Thon movement\, we would like to take this opportunity to enrich Wikipedia with edits and articles about underrepresented groups and events in Fordham history. Along the way\, we will learn a lot about how to evaluate content in Wikipedia\, how Wikipedia works\, and best practices for contributing to the world’s largest crowd-sourced encyclopedia. \nAll skill levels are welcome — orientation and training will be provided for beginners\, and plenty of computers will be available for use. Don’t know much about Fordham’s history? Don’t let that stop you from participating–Fordham librarians will be on hand to help participants navigate print and electronic reference sources that can be used when updating and adding Fordham-related content in Wikipedia. \nSnacks and refreshments will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there! \nQuestions? Please contact tmendenhall@fordham.edu for more info. \nWHEN: Wednesday\, November 2\, 2016\, 12PM – 3PM\nWHERE: Walsh Library\, Room 044\, Rose Hill Campus

SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion: Torture and Dual Loyalty Conflicts
DESCRIPTION:This training event will help professionals\, especially social workers\, to practice more effectively when faced with dual loyalty ethical dilemmas that can occur when working with institutionalized or incarcerated clients (e.g. when ordered to monitor the health of prisoners kept in solitary confinement without sufficient authority to end the harmful isolation). \nThe event will begin with a viewing of the 40 minute documentary\, Expert Witness: Health Professionals on the Frontline Against Torture by Dr. Martha Davis (www.expertwitnessagainsttorture.com). The film profiles four groups of health professionals working within or outside prisons who contribute to the prevention of state-supported torture\, sometimes at great personal risk. \nFollowing the documentary will be a brief discussion with the film’s director\, psychologist Dr. Martha Davis\, followed by a round table discussion of interdisciplinary professionals from psychology and medicine facilitated by Dr. Davis. In a second round table discussion\, facilitated by Dr. Tina Maschi (Fordham University GSS; Social Workers Against Solitary Confinement)\, will include other members of Social Workers Against Solitary Confinement)\, such as author/social worker\, Mary Buser. The facilitated dialogue with correctional social workers and former incarcerated individuals will give personal accounts of experiencing or witnessing prison abuse. The event will conclude with an rich discussion with all participants about how professionals can help prevent prison abuse\, manage dual loyalty dilemmas\, and advocate effectively for prison reforms.
