SUMMARY:Lecture: Science & the Sacred: Spirituality without Religion?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by John Cottingham\, DPhil\, University of Reading\, University of London\, Oxford University \n“I’m spiritual but not religious” has become an increasingly popular slogan. Many materialist and atheist thinkers have begun to acknowledge the importance of those specially uplifting aspects of human experience we call “spiritual”\, but maintain they can be explained entirely in scientific terms and without any traditional religious beliefs. This lecture will explore exactly what we mean by notions such as “spirituality” and “the sacred” and will argue that it is not easy to make adequate sense of them without a something very close to a religious worldview. \nThe Walton lectures in Science\, Philosophy\, and Religion aim to provide interested professionals around the New York area the opportunity to interact with scholars of the highest caliber concerning topics at the intersection of science\, philosophy\, theology\, and public policy. \nAll Lectures are free and open to the public. Reception to Follow.

SUMMARY:How to Die in Oregon: Screening & Discussion of NY Medical Aid in Dying Act
DESCRIPTION:Fordham University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology\, in partnership with Compassion & Choices\, is hosting a screening of the documentary How to Die in Oregon followed by Q&A and a discussion of the New York Medical Aid in Dying Act. Compassion & Choices is the nation’s oldest\, largest and most active nonprofit organization committed to improving care and expanding choice at the end of life. \nHow to Die in Oregon is an award-winning film that shows viewers real life experiences with Oregon’s Death with Dignity law. (We expect a full-house) \nLight refreshments will be served; RSVP appreciated: medicalaidindying.eventbrite.com \nA trailer of the movie is available here: http://www.howtodieinoregon.com/ \nSee also the Research Guide on Palliative and End-of-Life Care compiled by Fordham librarian\, Diane Batemarco. http://fordham.libguides.com/Palliative

SUMMARY:Social Justice Organizing Tapestry: From Police Reform to Worker's Rights
DESCRIPTION:The term “organizing” has inspired new momentum as people search for ways to pursue social justice against many forms of institutionalized oppression – Black Lives Matter\, reproductive rights\, LGBTQ rights among others. \nAlthough organizing has always been a part of strategies for change\, the tactics and outcomes are often not addressed or formalized within the context of a campaign. \nPlease join us for a panel presentation of different social justice campaign models\, each employing different tactics and varying levels of success and/or implementation outcomes. Our discussion will also highlight these organizing initiatives as an art form\, (ex. The “Hip Hop Movement” in Cuba) open to us all as extensions of our commitment\, creativity and self-reflection about our role in society. \nHosted by Fordham School of Professional and Continuing Studies – Westchester
