SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion: Commandment 613
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar discussion of the film Commandment 613 with Rabbi Kevin Hale\, Lois Roman\, Julie Seltzer\, and Miriam Lewin\, moderated by Rabbi Katja Vehlow\, Ph.D. The film will be virtually screened from September 19 to 29\, and a link will be sent to all registrants prior to the event. \nIn the award-winning\, 23-minute documentary\, Rabbi Hale joyfully practices the sacred craft of Torah restoration\, bringing new life to scrolls saved in Czechoslovakia during the Shoah. The scrolls are now loaned out to communities around the world by the Memorial Scrolls Trust in London. As Rabbi Hale’s scribal work takes him to some of those communities\, he reflects on his own path to faith and practice—and the many ways to fulfill the final commandment in the Torah: to write the scroll itself. \nOur online discussion will feature Rabbi Hale\, Julie Seltzer\, trustee of the Memorial Scrolls Trust Lois Roman\, and Miriam Lewin\, director of Commandment 613. The panel will be moderated by Rabbi Katja Vehlow\, Ph.D.\, of Fordham University. \nRead more about the speakers.

SUMMARY:Documentary Screening: Discerning the Call: Change in the American Priesthood
DESCRIPTION:When a man discovers a call to the priesthood today\, his process of discernment looks much different than it would have decades ago. In the past\, men entered seminary younger\, the application process was quicker\, and their friends and family usually celebrated the decision. Today\, the norm is much different. But why? \nIn this original documentary\, 2023–2024 Duffy Fellows Jay Doherty and Patrick Cullinan examine the cultural changes that have affected the American Catholic priesthood in the last 75 years. From the social and political upheaval of the 1960s and the clerical sex abuse crisis of the early 2000s to the modern embrace of secularism\, Discerning the Call: Change in the American Priesthood explores the many elements that have changed priestly discernment in the United States. \nThe documentary includes interviews with Cardinal Timothy Dolan\, archbishop of New York\, and Jesuit author James Martin\, SJ\, plus men ordained from the 1950s to the present day. \nAbout the Filmmakers\nPatrick Cullinan\, FCRH ‘24\, is in the Honors Program\, majoring in Latin and minoring in economics. He is deeply interested in Catholicism and its interaction with American culture\, having rediscovered the faith during his time at Fordham. \nJay Doherty\, FCRH ‘26\, is a sophomore studying digital technologies and emerging media and philosophy. He is a reporter for WFUV and serves as a University ambassador in the Rose Hill Society. Doherty is also the treasurer of Fordham’s Jesuit Network and the student representative of the University’s alumni association.

SUMMARY:MOSAIC Volunteer Outing with America Needs You
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a meaningful way to spend your Saturday? Then volunteer for a day with MOSAIC as a workshop coach with America Needs You (ANY)\, where you’ll join the fight for economic mobility for ambitious\, first-generation college students. \nCoaches work with college students during Saturday sessions to build their professional skills and help them realize their career potential. Saturday workshops serve ANY’s student fellows\, who are all first-generation college students. Coaches work with fellows on the day’s curriculum and activities by serving as a substitute mentor coach when the fellow’s mentor coach is absent for the day or by offering additional professional perspectives to an existing mentor coach-fellow pair. ANY curriculum covers all kinds of professional development topics\, from resume preparation and interview etiquette to giving and receiving feedback and managing up. \nAt workshops\, coaches typically participate in group or one-on-one work with fellows; for example\,\nwriting and reviewing a cover letter or building a pros/cons list for deciding between two internships. Workshops are generally from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Workshop coaches will expose students to their industries and prepare students to pursue internship/job opportunities by leading small group activities\, networking\, serving on panels\, or giving industry presentations. Coaches will receive additional details and logistics from an ANY staff member closer to the event date. Volunteers also attend a brief orientation on the day of the event. \nMOSAIC members will have the unique opportunity to volunteer with ANY as a group\, an experience that is generally reserved for ANY’s partner companies and organizations. ANY is looking for college graduates with one-plus year of post-graduation work experience who are willing to share their industry expertise and network. \nWe hope you can join us!

SUMMARY:The Mayor’s Office and the Church: NYC Migrant State of Emergency
DESCRIPTION:With migrant arrivals surging to 600 people per day\, and the reality that 44% of this population identifies as Latine\, Fordham presents a collaborative conversation between the NYC Mayor’s Office and one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people\, Sister Norma Pimentel\, on the current state of emergency gripping New York City due to the asylum-seeker humanitarian crisis. Fordham Law professor and immigration specialist Gemma Solimene will moderate the conversation. \nAttendees will be engaged in a compassionate and reflective dialogue designed to deepen their understanding of the formidable challenges faced by incoming migrants and residents alike. The discussion will spotlight the pivotal roles played by New York City’s communities and its religious and nonprofit organizations in offering critical support to all those in need\, as well as explore and encourage potential strategies for enhanced collaboration among stakeholders—with the ultimate aim of effectively addressing this pressing humanitarian issue.
