SUMMARY:AT CAPACITY: Lenten Read-Along and Discussion with the Alumni Chaplain
DESCRIPTION:In less than a month\, on February 17\, the Lenten season of reflection and preparation for Easter will begin with ashes and a reminder of our mortality. It will end in the light of a new fire\, the celebration of Easter\, and the promise of eternal life. \nEither as a part of your Lenten preparation for Easter or for a greater understanding of what Catholics believe\, all are invited to read Gerhard Lohfink’s 2020 book\, Is That All There Is? On Resurrection and Eternal Life\, along with Alumni Chaplain Damian O’Connell\, S.J. We will meet on Zoom on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. for seven weeks\, starting on Ash Wednesday\, February 17\, and ending on March 31\, the Wednesday of Holy Week. We will read and discuss fewer than 60 pages a week for 45 to 60 minutes. \nSince the plan is for these sessions to be interactive\, it is necessary to limit them to 15 participants. Please do feel personally invited and register at the link below. Once you register\, O’Connell will follow up via email with the readings for each week. We encourage you to purchase the book as soon as possible so that you can begin the first reading. The book is available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble.

DESCRIPTION:Please join Fordham’s Graduate School of Social Service and the Beck Institute on Religion and Poverty for this important interfaith conversation about how to support children and youth during this upcoming holiday season. SUMMARY:Fordham Alumni Chapter of Westchester: 2020 Holiday Toy Drive
DESCRIPTION:We are having our annual toy drive benefiting Elizabeth Seton Children’s Center\, now through December 18! The center has been closed to visitors since March due to COVID-19\, so let’s try to make their holiday a happy one. \nElizabeth Seton Children’s Center is the largest residential care center in the U.S. for children with severe medical complexity\, and a national leader in caring for this unique population. The children’s center offers vital medical\, educational\, and rehabilitative services to 169 children so they can lead their fullest lives. By also providing social\, recreational\, and spiritual programs\, the children’s center gives the children and their families a place to call home—and the peace of mind of true support 24 hours a day. Just as we cherish our precious children\, we are equally devoted to our families\, who are our partners in care. The majority of our children and their families are economically disadvantaged\, and 99% qualify for Medicaid assistance. \nThis year\, instead of drop boxes for your donations\, we are doing the toy drive virtually. Have a safe and happy holiday season!

SUMMARY:Solidarity\, Catholicism\, and Our Post-Pandemic Future: Pope Francis’s New Call for a Radical Reordering of Society’s Priorities
DESCRIPTION:The Vatican is releasing Pope Francis’s latest encyclical on Oct. 4\, the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi\, and his encyclical is expected to call for a radical commitment to genuine solidarity and economic and social justice. While grounded in Catholic social teaching\, the encyclical will be addressed to “the whole of humanity”—and it will land just weeks before a historic U.S. presidential election that features Catholic candidate Joe Biden squaring off against President Donald Trump. The issues raised by the encyclical are at the heart of the campaign\, and they are central to the intense debate over America’s core values and identity. The contrast could not be starker. The stakes could not be higher. \nIn this hour-long webinar\, three experts on Catholic social teaching and the Vatican will analyze the new encyclical—the most authoritative document a pope can issue—in the context of the Church’s new course under the pope\, the polarized dynamics of American politics\, and American Catholicism. \nPanelists\nMT Dávila is an associate professor of practice at Merrimack College in North Andover\, Massachusetts\, and a leading expert in Christian ethics. Her work focuses on immigration\, racism and racial justice\, and class and inequality. She is a past president of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States. \nChristopher Lamb is the Rome correspondent for The Tablet and author of The Outsider: Pope Francis and His Battle to Reform the Church (2020). His book explores the ministry of the pope and investigates the opposition that has mobilized against him\, and what it portends for the Catholic Church. \nThe Rev. Bryan Massingale is a professor of theology and social ethics at Fordham. He is a past convener of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium and a former president of the Catholic Theological Society of America. \nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate the discussion\, and take questions from the online audience. \nThis webinar is presented in collaboration with Fordham’s Curran Center for American Catholic Studies.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Coed Preached Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:St. Ignatius Loyola always urged retreatants to be keenly aware of their life circumstances—what was going on interiorly in the heart and exteriorly in the world and in the Church. During our preached weekend retreat\, we will look into the signs of the times by the light of faith and pray to devote ourselves more wholeheartedly to the service of the Gospel. Through our baptismal commitment\, we want to be attentive to the needs of all. Through sharing their grief and pain\, their joy and hope\, we may faithfully proclaim the healing that Christ brings to our fractured and broken world and the Church. Through our weekend retreat\, we want to become more courageous and bold in sharing Christ’s mission in our world today. \nThe retreat begins on Friday evening with dinner at 7 p.m. and ends on Sunday after Mass and lunch around 1 p.m. It will be led by the Rev. Tom Marciniak\, S.J.\, and Karen Florance. \n

SUMMARY:CANCELED: A Poor Church for the Poor: The Community of Sant’Egidio and the Radical Ministry of Pope Francis: An Evening with Marco Impagliazzo\, President of Sant’Egidio
DESCRIPTION:The Community of Sant’Egidio is one of the most remarkable\, and lesser-known\, examples of faith in action in the Catholic Church today. The identity of the Community of Sant’Egidio is guided by what Pope Francis has called the three P’s: Prayer\, Peace\, and the Poor. \nSince 1968\, the Community has offered a powerful witness of lay people living out their faith through programs that\, for example\, provide material and emotional support for the elderly\, the homeless\, and those suffering from HIV/AIDS. \nSant’Egidio has also worked closely with Pope Francis on a number of projects\, such as resettling refugees\, developing the Humanitarian Corridors program that has settled over 2\,500 refugees in Italy\, and operating the Pope’s recently opened home for the homeless. \nSant’Egidio has also been an effective protagonist for global peacemaking\, most recently helping to broker an end to hostilities in the brutal and long-running South Sudan conflict. \nThe Community has been nominated for a Nobel Prize for Peace. \nSant’Egidio’s president\, Marco Impagliazzo\, will be in New York for meetings at the United Nations and he will speak with Fordham’s community about Sant’Egidio’s mission in today’s world\, how they are working to assist the Pope\, and how faith can make a difference.

SUMMARY:Vipassana Meditation with Dr. Paul Fleischman
DESCRIPTION:In his eighth annual visit to New York City\, Dr. Paul R. Fleischman\, author\, psychiatrist\, and Vipassana meditation teacher in the tradition of S.N. Goenka\, will be giving a public talk called\, “Vipassana Meditation—A Practical and Spiritual Path.” This event will be organized by the Fordham South Asian Business Association and\nNew York Vipassana Association. \nDr. Fleischman will discuss Vipassana meditation\, which in the tradition of S.N. Goenka is taught in free\, donation-funded\, ten-day residential retreats. It combines a focus upon practical\, cognitive\, and emotional skills for living life with equanimity\, along with an additional emphasis on a spiritual path that echoes the teachings of the Buddha. Students on a ten-day retreat are challenged to observe themselves as minds and bodies\, which can be trained to live with greater peace and harmony. They also are guided towards the values of pro-social living\, and activities that contribute to more widespread availability of meditation in the contemporary world. Vipassana is both useful and a doorway to an inspired daily practice. \nThe talk will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A session where Dr. Fleischman will answer questions from audience members. \nAbout Dr. Paul R. Fleischman\nDr. Paul R. Fleischman was chief resident in psychiatry at Yale University\, where he also taught a seminar on psychiatry and religion. He is the author of numerous books and articles\, including Cultivating Inner Peace\, Karma and Chaos\, and Wonder: When and Why the World Appears Radiant. He was honored by the American Psychiatric Association for “unique contributions to the study of psychiatry and religion.” Dr. Fleischman has practiced Vipassana meditation since 1974. He and his wife\, Susan Fleischman\, were appointed Vipassana teachers by Mr. S.N. Goenka\, to explain meditation in the West. Some of his lectures and podcasts are available at pariyatti.org/paul. \nAbout Vipassana Meditation:\nVipassana is an ancient Indian technique of meditation that is now taught for free in ten-day residential courses. Vipassana leads its practitioners towards deep insights about the ultimate reality of one’s own body\, mind\, and self. For more information\, visit dhamma.org or contact gsbsaba@fordham.edu.

SUMMARY:Alumni Chapter of the United Kingdom: Charity Brunch at The Passage
DESCRIPTION:Happy new year to the Fordham Alumni Chapter of the U.K.! We hope you had a good time with your families and loved ones over the holidays\, and that you were able to recharge and relax a bit. \nPlease join Frew Long\, Katharina Koch-Duell\, and other Fordham alumni for our fourth annual charity brunch event\, where we will be serving hot breakfast to those who are homeless. The Passage\, located near Victoria Station in London\, is a charity organization that helps homeless and vulnerable people with primary services and advice on housing\, health care\, welfare\, and training. This event is both rewarding and fun. \nRSVP to Katharina at katharina.kochduell@gmail.com by February 7 if you are able to attend. An optional donation is suggested for attendees. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!
