SUMMARY:‘In Money We Trust?’ Film Screening and Conversation with Steve Forbes and Elizabeth Ames
DESCRIPTION:In Money We Trust? is an illuminating one-hour public television documentary that answers the question\, “what is money?” In a narrative that begins in ancient times and takes us to the present day\, the film explains how\, 2\,500 years ago\, the invention of money provided a shared measure of value that facilitated trade and cooperation between strangers. Sound\, trustworthy money has throughout history fueled great human achievement—from the emergence of philosophy to the high-tech revolution. The program also explores the destructive consequences that ensue when inflation or other forms of instability cause money not to be trusted. In the most extreme instances\, such as in Weimar Germany or present-day Venezuela\, the economy—and social order—collapses. \nAbout the Speakers \nSteve Forbes is chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media\, which publishes Forbes Magazine. Combined with Forbes Asia\, and the company’s licensee editions\, the magazine reaches over six million global readers. Forbes.com reaches over 65 million unique monthly visitors. Forbes products include iconic lists such as the Forbes 400 and Forbes Global Billionaires\, its noteworthy Women’s Summit and its 30 Under 30 lists and conferences that celebrate young achievers from around the world. He has written or co-authored numerous  books\, is a contributor to countless other publications\, and appears regularly on cable and broadcast outlets. \nElizabeth Ames is writer and co-producer of In Money We Trust?\, as well as producer of the film’s website\, InMoneyWeTrust.org. Ames has co-authored four books with Steve Forbes including Money: How the Destruction of the Dollar Threatens the Global Economy—and What We Can Do About It\, which is the basis of the documentary.

Originally founded as a public/private partnership between the New York State Unified Court System and the Fund for the City of New York\, the Center for Court Innovation creates operating programs to test new ideas and solve problems\, performs original research to determine what works (and what doesn’t)\, and provides expert assistance to justice reformers around the world. \nThe Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES) aims to increase public safety through innovative services that reduce crime and incarceration\, improve behavioral health\, promote recovery and rehabilitation\, and create opportunities for success in the community. \nCCI and CASES will discuss how social workers are integral to criminal justice reform\, how social workers make their programs run\, as well as the challenges and rewards of working in the criminal justice system. They will also discuss current career opportunities at their organizations. \nPresenter Bios: \nGiles Malieckal joined CASES in August 2016 to lead the newly created Manhattan Supervised Release program. He is a clinically trained social worker (LCSW) with over 14 years of experience working in social service settings at the intersections of behavioral health\, child welfare\, homelessness and criminal justice court-based diversion. In addition to currently serving as the Senior Director of Pretrial Services at CASES\, Giles led the Safety Committee of the agency to develop guidelines and procedures to assist both staff and participants. Giles holds a Master’s in Social Work from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service as well as an undergraduate degree in History from Occidental College in Los Angeles. \n** All Professional Development Workshops will be recorded and made available to current GSS students through the GSS youtube channel**

SUMMARY:GSS Conversation on Family Violence: A Focus on Grandparents
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for breakfast\, networking\, and conversation on family violence\, with a focus on grandparents. \nProfessor Amanda Holt is a criminologist and critical psychologist who will be a visiting professor at Fordham University from the University of Roehampton in the U.K. She has focused much of her research on the problem of child violence toward parents. Her most recent work extends to child and teen violence toward grandparents. She suggests the value of a life-course perspective on family violence. \nInvited guests include practitioners and researchers in the elder justice\, domestic violence\, and grand parenting services communities. We hope to create a climate where we can share our different perspectives on supporting and protecting older caregivers/grandparents both within the NYC service community and globally between the U.S. and the U.K. \nThis event is sponsored by the Ravazzin Center on Aging and Intergenerational Studies.

SUMMARY:GSS Professional Development Workshop: Careers in Forensic Social Work—The Legal Aid Society
DESCRIPTION:Fordham GSS alumni Maria Ortiz and Martha Arellano from the Legal Aid Society’s Juvenile Rights Practice will discuss what careers in forensic social work look like and how their practice intersects with child welfare. \nJoin us for a presentation and Q&A to follow. \nPresenters: \nMartha V. Arellano is a recent alumna from Fordham GSS Class of 2019. Prior to her graduate degree\, she worked as a bilingual service coordinator for an early intervention program. While pursuing her master’s\, she interned at the Manhattan office for Legal Aid Society as well as a women’s workforce development program\, Grace Institute. She currently holds the title of forensic social worker at the Brooklyn Legal Aid office for the Juvenile Rights Practice division. Combining her love for social work and the community\, Martha has used her skills and education (Stony Brook ’15\, M.S.W. ’19) to continue empowering NYC’s underserved pockets in all boroughs. \nMaria Ortiz graduated with a B.A. and M.A. in forensic psychology in 2005. Nearly ten years later\, in 2014\, she graduated from GSS with her Master of Social Work degree. While taking classes for her M.S.W.\, Maria continued working in child welfare at the Administration for Children’s Services. In 2016\, Maria got her License in Social Work and took a position in a family shelter as part of the NYC Thrive Initiative. Three years later\, Maria returned to child welfare as a forensic social worker at the Legal Aid Society. \nPrior to graduating from GSS\, Maria joined her local community board and continues to serve in that capacity\, currently as co-chair of housing\, health\, and human services. She has since served on other boards as well.

SUMMARY:James Grant on “Bagehot: The Life and Times of the Greatest Victorian”
DESCRIPTION:During the upheavals of 2007–2009\, the Federal Reserve chairman had the name of a Victorian icon on the tip of his tongue: Walter Bagehot. Banker\, man of letters\, inventor of the Treasury bill and author of Lombard Street\, the still-canonical guide to stopping a run on the banks\, Bagehot prescribed the doctrines that―decades later―inspired the radical responses to the world’s worst financial crises. \nBorn in the small market town of Langport\, just after the Panic of 1825 swept across England\, Bagehot followed in his father’s footsteps and took a position at the local family bank―but his influence on financial matters would soon spread far beyond the county of Somerset. Persuasive and precocious\, he came to hold sway in political circles\, making high-profile friends\, including William Gladstone\, and enemies\, such as Lord Overstone and Benjamin Disraeli. As a prolific essayist on wide-ranging topics\, Bagehot won the admiration of Matthew Arnold and Woodrow Wilson\, and delighted in paradox. He was also a misogynist\, and while he opposed slavery\, he misjudged Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. As editor of The Economist\, he offered astute commentary on the financial issues of his day\, and his name lives on in an eponymous weekly column. \nAbout the Author\nJames Grant\, financial journalist and historian\, is the founder and editor of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer\, a twice-monthly journal of the investment markets. His book\, The Forgotten Depression\, 1921: The Crash That Cured Itself\, a history of America’s last governmentally unmedicated business-cycle downturn\, won the 2015 Hayek Prize of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. His latest book is Bagehot: The Life and Times of the Greatest Victorian (W.W. Norton & Company\, July 2019). \nThis talk is followed by a reception. Doors open at 5:30 pm. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book. \nThis event will be livestreamed via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZM7BgZNGhzs&feature=youtu.be
