SUMMARY:Humanitarian Career Exploration Session with Liwliwa Orcales Agbayani\, of the International Committee of the Red Cross
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs introduces an online series focused on career exploration for Fordham University undergraduate and graduate students interested in social justice and humanitarian careers. Students of all majors and minors are invited to join a one hour Zoom video conference and ask questions during the Q&A to learn about the career journeys\, current work\, and field experiences from humanitarian professionals and Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs Alumni. \nThe host of this session will be Liwliwa “Liw” Orcales Agbayani\, Protection Delegate\, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Liw began her humanitarian career in 2013 as protection legal adviser in the ICRC Philippine delegation where she designed and implemented systemic projects to decrease overcrowding in jails by promoting judicial guarantees and improving criminal justice actors’ response. In this role\, she managed a Supreme Court of the Philippines endorsed-initiative in the city of Manila called “Task Force Katarungan at Kalayaan\,” monitoring and promoting the timely disposal of cases for unsentenced prisoners in lengthy detention. This initiative was institutionalized by the Philippine Government in 2016. \nAgbayani is currently in Maiduguri\, Borno State\, Nigeria where she is on her fourth month of her 12-month mission as child protection delegate. In her current role\, Agbayani participates in\, and contributes to the coherence of the response of ICRC Nigeria to the protection needs of minors affected by the situation of armed conflict in the Northeast\, focusing on identifying and addressing child-protection issues across all other protection files in the Nigerian context. \nAgbayani passed the 2004 Philippine Bar Examinations and has a literature degree. She has attended various international courses in project management\, advocacy and policy influencing\, sexual violence in armed conflict and emergencies among others. In June 2018\, she received her international diploma in Humanitarian Assistance from Fordham University as part of IDHA 52.

SUMMARY:2020 STEM Virtual Fair
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Virtual STEM Fair is open to all undergraduate students (GSB\, FCRH\, FCLC\, PCS) as well as students from GSAS\, GSE\, GRE\, the PCS graduate division and alumni of these programs. This event was rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic. \nThe STEM Virtual Fair will expose students and alumni to careers in the sciences\, technology\, engineering\, and math fields. Employers in these industries will be in attendance to market a variety of positions\, including full-time\, part-time\, internship\, graduate school programs and fellowship. All types of roles will be advertised\, so please come prepared to discuss your interests\, and don’t forget to upload your resume. \nPlease register ahead of time on Handshake. Before the event\, please get familiar with the CareerEco fair platform. \nYou can take an overview video tour of the system here: https://player.vimeo.com/video/106122434 \nThis overview takes you through everything from how employer chat rooms work to how to upload documents to your CareerEco profile. \nAttendees are encouraged to research participating organizations. Learn about the companies and think of questions you’ll want to ask. You can look companies up on Handshake to learn more about the specific positions they have available. You can also mark your interest in a company by clicking the “interest” checkbox on the CareerEco site. This will notify the company that you are interested in speaking with them. \nAttendees should have prepared a resume and have it reviewed by a career adviser. \nBecause you’re going to provide your resume to employers you meet with\, you’re going to want it up-to-date and spotless for the optimal first impression. You can have your resume reviewed virtually by a counselor. Once it is complete you can upload it to your CareerEco profile. \nAlso please make sure sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date. Employers will be searching for you online\, so you want to ensure your virtual profile aligns with your resume and best highlights your experience and skills. \nAttendees should also practice an elevator pitch. How will you introduce yourself? Why are you interested in the company? What types of positions are you seeking? You’ll want to spend some time thinking about questions like these so you’re ready to answer them without hesitation when the time comes. Your well-thought-out responses could impress a recruiter and allow you to stand out from the crowd of applicants. \nPlease make sure your technology is ready. You’ll want to make sure your device is capable of supporting you in the virtual career fair. For the STEM Virtual Fair\, CareerEco recommends using Firefox or Google Chrome as your browser. You may also want headphones if you cannot attend from a quiet\, private location. \nAt the event \nEven if the fair is not in-person you still should dress to impress. Dressing the part helps you feel more confident and gets you in the right mindset to interact professionally. Dressing professionally also ensures you are ready in case a recruiter wants to talk face-to-face via a virtual video call. \nMake sure you plan out where you’ll be attending the virtual career fair from. A quiet location is ideal so you can focus all your attention on interacting with recruiters. \nAt virtual career fairs\, it’s all the more important to exert yourself to make connections. Once an employer engages you in a chat\, make sure you introduce yourself and ask questions about the organization and open positions. Attendees must present themselves to employers and feel confident doing so. \nBeing a virtual career fair\, much of your communication will be done through written interactions in the chat function of the platform. You’ll want to demonstrate articulate written communication by having great grammar and appropriate spelling. \nWhen talking to recruiters at the career fair\, don’t hesitate to be forward and offer to send a copy of your resume! You also can ask about the next steps in the process—whether that means getting in touch with human resources\, filling out a job application or sitting down for a formal interview. Before parting ways with a recruiter\, be sure to take down their contact information. Some employers may have it uploaded and accessible within the virtual career fair platform. If not\, ask how you can stay in touch. You’ll need this information for following up after the virtual career fair. \nAfter the fair \nReach out the next day with a thank you. Make sure you follow-up and reach out to the connections you made at the career fair. Thank them each individually for their time and personalize these thank you notes. This is also a time to further express your interest in the company. You may also want to send them your resume if you haven’t already\, along with your portfolio or work samples if you have any. You can also stay in touch by adding the recruiter on LinkedIn and sending them a message there.

SUMMARY:CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: Mervyn King and Rana Foroohar on ‘Radical Uncertainty: Decision-Making Beyond the Numbers’
DESCRIPTION:Some uncertainties are resolvable. The insurance industry’s actuarial tables and the gambler’s roulette wheel both yield to the tools of probability theory. Most situations in life\, however\, involve a deeper kind of uncertainty\, a radical uncertainty for which historical data provide no useful guidance to future outcomes. Radical uncertainty concerns events whose determinants are insufficiently understood for probabilities to be known or forecasting possible. Before President Barack Obama made the fateful decision to send in the Navy Seals\, his advisers offered him wildly divergent estimates of the odds that Osama bin Laden would be in the Abbottabad compound. In 2000\, no one—not least Steve Jobs—knew what a smartphone was; how could anyone have predicted how many would be sold in 2020? And financial advisers who confidently provide the information required in the standard retirement planning package—what will interest rates\, the cost of living\, and your state of health be in 2050?—demonstrate only that their advice is worthless. \nThe limits of certainty demonstrate the power of human judgment over artificial intelligence. In most critical decisions there can be no forecasts or probability distributions on which we might sensibly rely. Instead of inventing numbers to fill the gaps in our knowledge\, we should adopt business\, political\, and personal strategies that will be robust to alternative futures and resilient to unpredictable events. Within the security of such a robust and resilient reference narrative\, uncertainty can be embraced\, because it is the source of creativity\, excitement\, and profit. \nAbout the speakers:\nMervyn King\, former governor of the Bank of England\, is a professor at New York University and emeritus professor at the London School of Economics. He is the author of Radical Uncertainty and The End of Alchemy\, among other books. King will be interviewed by Rana Foroohar\, the global business columnist and an associate editor at the Financial Times. She is also CNN’s global economic analyst and the author of Makers and Takers: The Rise of Finance and the Fall of American Business. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Museum of American Finance. \nConversation followed by Q&A and reception. Registration opens at 5:30 p.m. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book.

SUMMARY:Gregory Zuckerman on ‘The Unlikely Story of How Jim Simons Solved the Market’
DESCRIPTION:Jim Simons is the greatest moneymaker in modern financial history. No other investor can touch his record. Since 1988\, Renaissance’s signature Medallion fund has generated average annual returns of 66%. The firm has earned profits of more than $100 billion—Simons is worth $23 billion. \nDrawing on unprecedented access to Simons and dozens of current and former employees\, Zuckerman\, a veteran Wall Street Journal investigative reporter\, tells the gripping story of how a world-class mathematician and former code breaker mastered the market. Simons pioneered a data-driven\, algorithmic approach that’s sweeping the world. Zuckerman’s most recent book\, The Man Who Solved the Market\, is a portrait of a modern-day Midas who remade markets in his own image\, but failed to anticipate how his success would impact his firm and his country. It’s also a story of what Simons’s revolution means for the rest of us. \nAbout the Author\nGregory Zuckerman is the author of The Greatest Trade Ever and The Frackers\, and is a special writer at the Wall Street Journal. At the Journal\, Zuckerman writes about financial firms\, personalities\, and trades\, as well as hedge funds and other investing and business topics. He’s a three-time winner of the Gerald Loeb award\, the highest honor in business journalism. Zuckerman also appears regularly on CNBC\, Fox Business\, and other networks and radio stations around the globe. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Museum of American Finance. \nTalk followed by Q&A and reception. Registration opens at 5:30 p.m. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book.

SUMMARY:Investing In Financial Research: A Decision-Making System For Better Results with Cheryl Einhorn
DESCRIPTION:Got financial decisions to make? Learn how to invest in financial research with author Cheryl Einhorn at this book lecture sponsored by the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. \nEvery day\, people around the world make financial decisions. They choose to invest in a stock\, sell their holdings in a mutual fund\, or buy a condominium. These decisions are complex and financially tricky—even for financial professionals. But the literature available on financial research is dated and narrowly focused without any real practical application. Until now there’s been a gap in the literature—a book that shows you how to conduct a step-by-step comprehensive financial investigation that ends in a decision. \nThis book gives you that how. \nInvesting in Financial Research is a guidebook for conducting financial investigations and lays out Cheryl Strauss Einhorn’s AREA Method—a research and decision-making system that uniquely controls for bias\, focuses on the incentives of others and expands knowledge while improving judgement—and applies it to investigating financial situations. AREA is applicable to all sorts of financial sleuthing\, whether for investment analysis or investigative journalism. It allows you to be the expert in your own life. \nFirst 100 attendees will receive a free copy of the book. \nAbout the Author: \nCheryl Strauss Einhorn is the creator of the AREA Method\, a decision making system for individuals and companies to solve complex problems. She is the founder of CSE Consulting and the author of the award-winning book Problem Solved: A Powerful System for Making Complex Decisions with Confidence & Conviction. Einhorn teaches as an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and has won several journalism awards for her investigative stories about international political\, business and economic topics. Bishop created a new global institute that brought together diverse voices from around the world to shine a light on big ideas\, and help to rapidly\nimplement scalable solutions to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people. Previously\, he spent more than 25 years at The Economist\, serving in roles such as U.S. Business Editor\, New York Bureau Chief and global business editor. Through a variety of writing\, editorial\, and leadership roles\, he has committed himself to turning good ideas into forceful action. Bishop cofounded the Social Progress\nIndex\, helped to launch the #GivingTuesday campaign\, and was a member of the G8 Taskforce on Social Impact Investing.
