Columba Stewart\, O.S.B.\, is a Benedictine monk at Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville\, Minnesota. Father Stewart\, professor of theology and director of the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library\, has been involved with the digitization and cataloging of more than 200\,000 endangered Christian and Islamic manuscripts in libraries around the world. He is coming to Fordham as a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar.

DESCRIPTION:About the Keynote Speaker: \nStacey Cunningham is the president of the NYSE Group\, which includes the New York Stock Exchange and a diverse range of equity and equity options exchanges\, all wholly owned subsidiaries of Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: ICE). She is the 67th president and the first woman to lead the NYSE Group in its 227-year history. \nMost recently\, she was the COO of NYSE\, where she was responsible for NYSE’s five equity markets and two options markets\, leading the company’s strategy for its equities\, equity derivatives\, and ETF businesses. Prior to serving as COO\, Cunningham was president of NYSE Governance Services and served as head of sales and relationship management at NYSE. Before joining NYSE\, Cunningham held several senior positions at Nasdaq. \nCunningham began her career on the NYSE trading floor\, where she served as a specialist. \nCunningham earned her B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University. \nAbout the Moderator: \nDoreen Mogavero was founder and CEO of Mogavero\, Lee & Co.\, Inc.\, the first and only floor-based\, direct access firm to be wholly owned and operated by women. Throughout her career\, Mogavero has been an integral part of the Wall Street community. She began in 1975 as the clerk on the American Stock Exchange\, working for her father at Tucker Anthony R.L. Day Inc. and then working for Ivan F. Boesky and Co. She was a clerk on the American Stock Exchange\, then a member of the New York Futures Exchange in 1979\, and then in 1980\, went on to become the 12th woman in history to become a member of the prestigious New York Stock Exchange. Mogavero bought her seat in 1994 and was the second woman to buy her seat on the Exchange with funds earned working on the trading floor. \nHer list of “firsts” are many\, most notably\, she was the first female member from the New York Stock Exchange trading floor to be appointed to a board position in 2003 as a member of the Board of Executives. Her work in financial literacy for students was recognized in 2009 by Wright State University resulting in an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Today\, Doreen is one of the women featured on the wall of tribute to the women of the New York Stock Exchange\, in the recently constructed Muriel Seibert Room at the Exchange. Mogavero has appeared as a regular and guest commentator on CNBC\, Bloomberg TV\, and the Fox Business Network.  She was featured on the cover of Forbes’ Women’s Enterprise Magazine.  \nShe continues to serve on the advisory board of Sloan Women’s Hospital at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and has recently been appointed to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority’s (FINRA) Series 57 committee\, and as an advisory board member of the Feminist Institute\, the most significant depository in the world for the study of feminist documentation.

SUMMARY:2019 Anastasi Lecture: 'The Bayesian Revolution\, And Why You Should Care"'
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: David Kaplan\, Ph.D. \nBayesian statistics has long been overlooked in the training of social and behavioral scientists. Bayesian statistics were considered controversial and\, until recently\, it was not feasible to conduct Bayesian statistical modeling because of its complexity and lack of software. \nRecently\, there has been great interest in the application of Bayesian methods\, due to the availability of powerful (and free) statistical software tools that now make it possible to estimate simple or complex models. This talk provides a conceptual introduction to Bayesian statistics with a focus on its advantages over conventional statistics\, particularly with respect to characterizing uncertainty and addressing the so-called “p-value problem.” \nDavid Kaplan\, Ph.D.\, is the Patricia Busk Professor of Quantitative Methods in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on the development of Bayesian statistical methods for education research\, and is directed toward applications to large-scale cross-sectional and longitudinal survey designs. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Education\, a recipient of the Samuel J. Messick Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award from the APA Division 5\, a recipient of the Alexander Von Humboldt Research Prize\, and an honorary research fellow in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford.

SUMMARY:GSS Professional Development Workshop: Policy\, Homelessness\, and Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:A disproportionate number of young adults who transition out of foster care become homeless. This workshop will focus on the continuing evaluation of an innovative federally funded initiative that has been developed to address this issue in Westchester. Highlighted will be risk and protective factors\, identified by a Fordham GSS research team\, that are helping to inform the foster care/child welfare system’s consideration of new policy and program directions. \nSpeaker Bio:\nRalph Gregory\, L.M.S.W.\, has been a GSS adjunct professor in the social policy area since 2010 and is also a member of the foster care research team. Previously\, he served for almost 30 years as CEO of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam. And before that\, he served as the executive director of two direct service agencies—a residential treatment center and a multi-site senior center operation. \n**All professional development workshops will be recorded and made available to current GSS students through the GSS YouTube channel**

DESCRIPTION:Urban intelligence is the operationalization of data in urban spaces through data analytics\, machine learning\, and artificial intelligence. An ever-growing field\, urban intelligence is transforming urban spaces\, behavior\, and governance. While urban intelligence may empower cities to improve efficiencies in areas such as infrastructure\, sustainability\, and social services\, its increasing use implicates a myriad of rights\, including privacy\, due process\, and equal access. As users and consumers of urban intelligence\, urbanites face inevitable growing pains\, particularly with how the data is used\, which may reflect racial\, gender\, economic\, and ethnic biases of the past and present. \nThe inevitable growth and consequent reach of urban intelligence necessitates increased investigation into the phenomenon’s regulatory and rights-based consequences. The 2019 Fordham Urban Law Journal Cooper– Walsh Colloquium provides such a forum. DESCRIPTION:“The Schools We Need: Lessons Learned From Harlem’s Mothers and Othermothers” \nTerri N. Watson is an associate professor of education leadership at The City College of New York. A Harlem native\, her research examines effective school leadership and is aimed to improve the educational outcomes and life chances of historically excluded and underserved students and families. Watson is the guest editor for a special issue of the Journal of Educational Administration and History (Taylor & Francis Group) titled A Seat at the Table: Examining the Impact\, Ingenuity\, and Leadership Practices of Black Women and Girls in PK – 20 Contexts (Publication Date: Summer 2020). \nWatson will share her research on Mae Mallory and the “Harlem Nine.” She will discuss their class action lawsuit against New York City’s Board of Education and their efforts to desegregate Harlem’s schools. This talk comes from Watson’s current book project\, tentatively titled The Schools We Need: Lessons Learned From Harlem’s Mothers and Othermothers.

The Humanitarian Student Unions of Rose Hill and Lincoln Center and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) are hosting a panel on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and how it affects the world we live in. There will also be speakers from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)\, the UN Mission to Ireland\, PAX No Nukes\, and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). DESCRIPTION:Join GSAS Futures for an intimate discussion with Donna Smolens\, GSAS ’81\, on strategies for career transition and advancement in corporate sector industries. Smolens\, a senior advisor at Insight Venture Partners\, will describe her professional journey as she made the most of a master’s degree she earned from Fordham’s Department of Economics—an experience that afforded her the opportunity to receive close mentorship\, among a range of other opportunities and resources—to pursue a high-powered career in corporate finance. \nSmolens will also advise students on particular areas where they should focus on acquiring knowledge and skill development based on industry trends. A Q&A session following the discussion will leave ample time for students to dialogue with Smolens as they reflect on their own goals and priorities.
