SUMMARY:IPED Lecture: Legacy of U.S. Policy Response of 1989 in Central Europe
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this lecture by Martin Miszerak\, an investment banker and former adviser to the Polish government. \nShortly after taking office in January 1989\, U.S. President George H. W. Bush faced the urgent task of designing a U.S. response to the brewing political and economic turmoil in Central Europe\, as well as the diplomatic offensive of Soviet leader Michael Gorbachev. Following a comprehensive review\, his administration designed an unprecedented and extremely innovative policy response for delivering U.S. economic assistance to Central Europe. The response relied on establishment of a private equity-type mechanism for not only delivering capital directly to Central European entrepreneurs but also for improving best practices\, providing technical assistance\, and fostering civil society. Miszerak will examine this history and how the legacy of the U.S. policy response of 1989 has made a lasting contribution to Central European business environments.

SUMMARY:Managing Stereotype Threat on the Job Market
DESCRIPTION:Join GSAS Futures in conversation with Rufus E. Jones\, co-founder and president of the James Weldon Johnson Foundation. Jones will discuss a challenge endemic to many new candidates seeking jobs in academic and industry circles alike: stereotype threat. Candidates are often unaware of the capacity for stereotype threat to negatively impact their pursuit of professional success. Stereotype threat involves an individual undermining his or her own performance at a given task because of widespread beliefs that a social group with which he or she identifies—including groups organized by race\, gender\, nation\, or age—do not naturally perform well at that particular task. \nStereotype threat can breed anxiety and create conditions of self-sabotage in which job candidates struggle to perform well on interviews\, to negotiate contracts with new employers\, and to perform new jobs with competence and confidence. Feelings of discomfort may accompany settings where people feel there are few people like them. Nevertheless\, enhanced awareness and understanding of stereotype threat can greatly reduce its effects. \nJones will discuss his own journey as an individual of color who moved from Harvard to Wall Street to roles promoting education and the arts as a teacher\, administrator\, coach\, and fundraiser. Jones will discuss stereotype threat as he draws from his own experience as well as research he is co-facilitating with the James Weldon Johnson Foundation and a lab at New York University. He will discuss challenges that individuals may encounter as they pursue a range of professions and will offer practical coping strategies—including the use of interventions\, language\, and tactics to effectively handle various situations and mitigate the effects of stereotype threat to promote a job candidate’s success. \nLight refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Be an Upstander: The Fred Heyman Story: Screening and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this documentary screening and talk with Holocaust survivor Fred Heyman and producer Howard Goldberg. Refreshments will be served! \nAbout Fred Heyman\nHeyman was born in Berlin\, Germany. He is the only male survivor of his family\, who resided in the city until the end of 1946 and experienced anti-Semitism and the rise and fall of Nazi Germany while Heyman was a teenager. He managed to survive with the help of a Catholic family. Only about 8\,000 Berlin Jews survived the Nazi era out of the 170\,000 Jews who populated the city in the 1920s\, making up a third of the entire Jewish population of Germany or 4 percent of the city’s population at the time. Only 4\,700 were protected from deportation by “mixed marriages” to an “Aryan” partner\, like the Heymans. Only 1\,900 returned from camps\, and an estimated 1\,500 survived underground. But once the war was over\, only a few wanted to remain in Germany. The Heyman family also decided to emigrate to the United States in 1947. Fred Heyman did not want to talk about his experiences for a long time. But after being approached to share his memories\, his current mission emerged: “The opposite of a bystander is an upstander. I want to be an upstander. I want people to be upstanders. In Nazi Germany\, most people did not help\,” he says. \nFor more information\, contact Maria Ebner at mebner1@fordham.edu. \nThis even is being generously supported by Dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill Maura Mast\, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures\, and the Jewish Studies program.

SUMMARY:A Rich Brew—Urban Cafes and Modern Jewish Culture: A Talk by Shachar Pinsker
DESCRIPTION:Shachar Pinsker\, a scholar of Hebrew literature\, argues that coffeehouses anchored a silk road of modern Jewish culture. This lecture will uncover a network of interconnected cafés that were central to the modern Jewish experience in a time of migration and urbanization—in Odessa\, Warsaw\, Vienna\, Berlin\, New York City\, and Tel Aviv. Drawing on stories\, novels\, poems\, newspaper articles\, memoirs\, archival documents\, photographs\, caricatures\, and artwork\, Pinsker will show how Jewish modernity was born in the café\, nourished\, and sent out into the world by way of politics\, literature\, art\, and theater. What was experienced and created in the space of the coffeehouse touched thousands who read\, saw\, and imbibed a modern culture that redefined what it meant to be a Jew in the world. \nShachar Pinsker is an associate professor of Hebrew literature and culture at the University of Michigan. He is the author of Literary Passports: The Making of Modernist Hebrew Fiction in Europe\, which won the 2011 Jordan Schnitzer Book Award from the Association for Jewish Studies. He the editor of Where the Sea and Earth Meet: Israeli Stories in Yiddish (2016) and Meager Gifts from Desert Islands: Women’s Hebrew Poetry on American Shores (2016)\, and the co-editor of Hebrew\, Gender\, and Modernity (2007). He has published numerous articles dealing with Hebrew\, Jewish\, and Israeli literature and culture. His most recent book\, A Rich Brew: Urban Cafés and Modern Jewish Culture\, will be published later on this year.

SUMMARY:Emerging Voices in Jewish Studies: A Talk by Allyson Gonzalez\, Yale University
DESCRIPTION:Scholarship\, Belonging\, and the Politics of A.S. Yahuda’s Forgotten Scholarship\nA Talk by Allyson Gonzalez\, Yale University \nIn the midst of WWI\, the Orientalist Abraham S. Yahuda (1877-1951) served as the first chair of Rabbinic Language and Literature at the University of Madrid\, Spain’s flagship university. Born in Jerusalem to Baghdadi and German parents\, and of distant Sephardi heritage\, Yahuda held a chair in Jewish studies more than a decade before both Harry Wolfson (1925) and Salo W. Baron (1930). This talk asks how an important figure like Yahuda has been all but forgotten and examines his participation in the complex political and academic worlds that surrounded him. \n This is a joint event of Fordham University’s Center for Jewish Studies and Columbia’s Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies.

SUMMARY:Financial Crisis\, Corporate Governance\, and Bank Capital: A Presentation by Author Sanjai Bhagat
DESCRIPTION:The Fordham Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis cordially invites you to a special book presentation by Sanjai Bhaghat\, author of Financial Crisis\, Corporate Governance\, and Bank Capital. \nIn the aftermath of the 2008 crisis\, senior policymakers and the media blamed excessive risk-taking by bank executives—undertaken in response to their compensation incentives—for the crisis. The inevitable follow-up to this was to introduce stronger financial regulation\, in the hope that better and more ethical behavior could be induced. Despite the honorable intentions of regulation\, such as the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010\, it is clear that many big banks are still deemed too big to fail. This book argues that by restructuring executive incentive programs to include only restricted stock and restricted stock options with very long vesting periods\, and by financing banks with considerably more equity\, the potential of future financial crises can be minimized.
