SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Classical New York
DESCRIPTION:Join Fordham’s own Matthew McGowan\, chair of the Department of Classics\, as he guides us on a walk of classical New York. The Fordham University Press recently published Classical New York\, a book edited by Professor McGowan\, so suffice it to say that he’s an expert! The tour will give us a firsthand look at some of the publication’s material. \nWe’ll begin our tour at St. Peter’s Church\, the oldest Catholic parish in New York. We’ll then proceed to St. Paul’s Chapel of Trinity Church\, and we’ll complete our tour at Trinity Church itself. \nPlease Note: The entire tour will be approximately 0.5 miles on mostly flat ground. This event will happen rain or shine! If it does rain\, just remember that we’ll be inside of churches for most of the walk. \nAfter our guided tour\, we’ll head to lunch at a restaurant near Trinity Church. Professor McGowan will share additional insights with us as well as answer any remaining questions. Lunch is also a great opportunity to get to know some of your fellow Rams! \nTickets for the entire event are $60 per person. \nA reminder email with additional information will be sent to you one week prior to the event. \nDon’t miss this special day exploring some of New York’s most iconic churches!

SUMMARY:Tour of the Louis Armstrong House Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour exploring how Louis Armstrong lived! He was one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world when he chose the working-class neighborhood of Corona\, Queens\, to be his home in 1943. “And you take this neighborhood we live in\,” Louis said in 1964. “We’re right out here with the rest of the colored folk and the Puerto Ricans and Italians and the Hebrew cats. We don’t need to move out in the suburbs to some big mansion with lots of servants and yardmen and things.” \nThe Louis Armstrong House Museum sustains and promotes the cultural\, historical\, and humanitarian legacy of Louis Armstrong by preserving and interpreting Armstrong’s house and grounds\, collecting and sharing archival materials that document Armstrong’s life and legacy\, and presenting public programs such as exhibits\, concerts\, lectures\, and film screenings. The museum seeks to educate and inspire people of all ages\, origins\, and locations. \nPlease note: The entire ground floor (which includes the Welcome Center\, Museum Store\, exhibit area\, and restroom) of the museum is wheelchair-accessible. The historic house tour requires the ability to climb two sets of steep stairs and to stand for 40 minutes. Visitors that are unable to take the tour receive a virtual tour instead. \nAfter the tour\, we’ll eat lunch at a nearby restaurant. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet some of your fellow alumni! \nThis event costs $60 per person\, which includes the tour and lunch. \nAn email reminder with meeting details will be sent to all registrants one week prior to the event. Please reach out if you have any questions\, and we hope to see you there!

After the tour\, we’ll walk to the Meatball Shop for our group lunch. \nJoining us for this event is Fordham’s very own Denisha Williams\, a Fordham professor of interdisciplinary courses in environmental and urban design. The tour lasts about 75 minutes\, during which time we’ll walk the 1.45 mile park. We’ll also walk approximately 0.5 miles to lunch. \nAdditionally\, please note that our tour will take place rain or shine! \nA reminder email with final details will be sent to you one week prior to the event. \n  \nAbout the High Line \nBuilt on a historic elevated freight line destined for demolition\, the High Line is an example of how cities can reuse industrial spaces to create beautiful\, hybrid spaces that has inspired millions worldwide! \nConverting each section of the High Line from an out-of-use railroad trestle to a public landscape entailed not only years of planning\, community input\, and work by some of the city’s most inventive designers\, but also more than two years of construction per section. \nThe High Line’s planting design is inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew on the out-of-use elevated rail tracks during the 25 years after trains stopped running. The species of perennials\, grasses\, shrubs\, and trees were chosen for their hardiness\, sustainability\, and textural and color variation\, with a focus on native species. Many of the species that originally grew on the High Line’s rail bed are incorporated into the park’s landscape. \n

SUMMARY:Carousel on Broadway
DESCRIPTION:About the Musical\n“One of the most hallowed works of the American stage” (The New York Times) returns to Broadway for the first time in more than two decades. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s timeless musical Carousel comes to life in a new production starring Tony-nominee Joshua Henry\, Tony-winner Jessie Mueller\, and Renée Fleming in her first-ever appearance in a Broadway musical. \nSet in a small New England factory town\, Carousel describes the tragic romance between a troubled carnival barker and the young woman who gives up everything for him. Elevated to an epic scale with a sweeping musical score and incandescent ballet sequences\, this story of passion\, loss\, and redemption introduced Broadway to a new manner of musical drama — one that “set the standard for the 20th century musical” (Time Magazine) and would captivate theatergoers for generations to come. \nEvent Details\nBefore heading to the show\, we’ll gather for dinner at a restaurant near the theater. This is a great opportunity to meet some of your fellow alumni! We’ll also have the chance to hear from a special guest speaker with a Fordham connection. \nTickets are $210 per person and include both dinner and the show. Our tickets are in the Orchestra section and will be handed out during dinner. \nThe restaurant and guest speaker are TBA. This information will be emailed to you one week prior to the event.

SUMMARY:The Iceman Cometh\, Starring Denzel Washington
DESCRIPTION:About the Play\nFrank Rich of The New York Times raved\, “the word ‘masterwork’ is not invoked lightly. Eugene O’Neill’s tragic vision remains undiminished by time. The Iceman Cometh is a ferocious American classic that has lost none of its power to send one shaking into the middle of the night.” Denzel Washington\, fresh off his extraordinary sell-out runs in both Fences and A Raisin in the Sun\, comes back to the Main Stem in “the greatest American play” (New York Magazine) by “the greatest American playwright” (The Washington Post). \nEvent Details\nJoin Joseph M. McShane\, S.J.\, president of Fordham University\, for this special evening on Broadway\, featuring Fordham’s own Denzel Washington\, FCLC ’77. \nBefore heading to the show\, we’ll gather for dinner at Etc. Etc. Restaurant. This is a great opportunity to meet some of your fellow alumni! We’ll also have the chance to hear from a special guest speaker with a Fordham connection. \nTickets are $235 per person and include both dinner and the show. Our tickets are in the Orchestra section and will be handed out during dinner. \nThe guest speaker is TBA. This information will be emailed to you one week prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Amadeus Live at the New York Philharmonic
DESCRIPTION:About the Performance\nExperience this Oscar-winning movie like never before—projected on a giant screen while the Philharmonic performs its glorious soundtrack\, from the “Gran Partita” to the haunting “Requiem\,” live. This riveting film classic pits the mediocre\, frustrated Salieri (chillingly played by F. Murray Abraham\, who won the Academy Award for his role) against Mozart\, the genius who “seemed to be taking dictation from God.” A not-to-be-missed New York premiere! \nEvent Details\nBefore heading to the show\, we’ll gather for dinner at a restaurant near the New York Philharmonic. This is a great opportunity to meet some of your fellow alumni! We’ll also have the chance to hear from a special guest speaker with a Fordham connection. \nTickets are $135 per person and include both dinner and the show. Our tickets are in the Orchestra section and will be handed out during dinner. \nThe restaurant and guest speaker are TBA. This information will be emailed to you one week prior to the event.
