SUMMARY:Exhibit: “Fordham’s Babel: An Exploration of World Languages in the Special Collections”
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit\, featuring centuries-old books and manuscripts\, explores Western interest in languages. At first\, we try to situate the story of Babel in a non-Western context\, highlighting non-European languages. The exhibit then traces the Renaissance study of languages through the lens of the Bible and its translations and of ancient material relics\, such as obelisks\, coins\, and other remains. We also showcase the tools scholars produced to study languages—for example\, medieval and Renaissance-era grammar books and lexicons. The exhibit ends with a reflection on the impact of language study and classification on the formation of identities and prejudices in the Western world. How did early 20th-century Westerners classify languages and peoples? What does it say about their understanding of nationalities and cultures and their place within a society of their own? \nThe exhibit was curated by Gabriella DiMeglio\, Miriam Krakowski\, FCRH ’27\, and Magda Teter.

SUMMARY:“Henna\, Love\, and Light: Jewish Life and Art in Siona Benjamin’s India”
DESCRIPTION:In 2011\, Siona Benjamin\, an intercultural artist born in India to a Bene Israel Jewish community\, returned to her country of birth on a Fulbright India-US fellowship. During her stay\, she traveled across the country\, conducting research and interviewing Jews in India. “Henna\, Love\, and Light: Jewish Life and Art in Siona Benjamin’s India” brings to Fordham several pieces from Siona Benjamin’s series of photo-collage paintings\, “Faces: Weaving Indian Jewish Narratives.” These pieces serve as anchors that link the present and the past. Around Siona Benjamin’s art are photographs taken by the artist’s parents and family members. In the 1950s\, Siona Benjamin’s parents\, Judah and Sophie Benjamin\, traveled across India photographing synagogues and houses of prayer\, capturing the range and diversity of the Indian Jewish community: from splendid metropolitan synagogues to small rural prayer halls. The cache of photographs in Siona Benjamin’s possession thus documents an aspect of Jewish history\, now threatened by oblivion. \nLike Siona Benjamin’s art\, some of the old family photographs underscore how much the life and culture of Jews in India were very much of India. Henna\, saris\, glass lamps of synagogue lights meld with modern suits and classic fedoras becoming one. Indian and Jewish\, traditional and modern–all form a distinct Indian Jewish identity. \nThe exhibit was made possible by the Hadassah Ruth Weiner Jewish Art Fund at Fordham University and was curated by Amy Levine-Kennedy\, Mallory Roof FCRH ‘26\, and Magda Teter. It will be on view from January 30 until March 28\, 2025 in the Henry S. Miller Judaica Research Room on the 4th floor of the Walsh Family Library.

SUMMARY:Trial Stories in Ancient Judaism
DESCRIPTION:The image of the lofty and impartial judge is rooted in biblical and ancient texts; God is often depicted as the ultimate judge on high that human judges must emulate. But in these same collections of texts\, we find counternarratives that challenge this view of judges\, acknowledging their limitations. They are humans with a place in the social and material world\, which comes inescapable relational and emotional entanglements. This talk will explore one trial story in the Babylonian Talmud that leaves us with a new image of the judge: not aloof and impartial\, not biased and corrupt\, but caught somewhere in between. It will end by considering what we can do with this compromised image of justice. \nChaya Halberstam is a professor of Hebrew Bible and Judaism in the department of Religious Studies at King’s University College at the University of Western Ontario. Her research focuses on the legal cultures of Israelite and Jewish antiquity\, with an emphasis on early rabbinic literature. Her work explores the role of legal discourse in shaping cultural attitudes and practices—and its limits. Her first book\, Law and Truth in Biblical and Rabbinic Literature\, came out in 2010 and received the Salo Baron prize for best first book in Jewish studies. Her most recent book\, Trial Stories in Jewish Antiquity: Counternarratives of Justice\, came out in 2024 with Oxford University Press.

SUMMARY:From Catalonia to Yemen: Hebrew Manuscript Fragments and Jewish Bookbindings in the NYPL and around the World with Leor Jacobi (Bar-Ilan University)
DESCRIPTION:Hebrew manuscript fragments have recently been discovered in NYPL collection book bindings. These will be presented\, identified and discussed in comparison with book bindings and Hebrew fragments from around the world. Two distinct regions with different book production and binding methods will be analyzed: Sefarad (Spain) and the Mediterranean zone\, culturally linked to the Islamic world\, as opposed to Christian regions of Ashkenaz (Germany) and Northern Europe on the other. \nLeor Jacobi is a researcher of medieval art and rabbinic literature who teaches at Bar-Ilan University\, where he serves as an editor of the Department of Jewish Art’s academic journal: Ars Judaica. He has published and lectured widely around the world on the topic of medieval falconry and maintains a focus on Jewish bookbinding craft in medieval Catalonia and Hebrew manuscript fragments extracted from these bindings. Leor was previously awarded Postdoctoral Fellowships by Humboldt Stiftung and the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. Currently\, his research is supported by the American Philosophical Society.

DESCRIPTION:Join Campus Ministry\, the Center for Religion and Culture\, the Curran Center for American Catholic Studies\, and the Jesuit community at Fordham Rose Hill for a film screening of the movie Cabrini. The film depicts the life of a Catholic missionary sister from Italy named Francesca Cabrini\, who encounters resistance to her charity efforts in NYC. Cabrini explores the sexism and anti-Italian bigotry faced by Mother Cabrini and other immigrants in the United States—and in the Catholic Church itself—in the late 19th and early 20th century. Mother Cabrini died in 1917\, and in 1946\, she was canonized\, becoming the first American saint. In 1950\, she was named the Patroness of Immigrants.

SUMMARY:Sonic Icons: A Conversation with Sarah Bakker Kellogg and Ashley Purpura
DESCRIPTION:To the extent that Middle Eastern Christians register in Euro-American political imaginaries\, they are usually invoked to justify Western military intervention into countries like Iraq or Syria\, or as an exemption to anti-Islamic immigration policies because of an assumption that their Christianity makes them easily assimilable in the so-called “Judeo-Christian” West. \nUsing the tools of multisensory ethnography\, Sonic Icons uncovers how these views work against the very communities they are meant to benefit. Through long term fieldwork in the Netherlands among Syriac Orthodox Christians—also known as Assyrians\, Aramaeans\, and Syriacs—Bakker Kel­logg reveals how they intertwine religious practice with political activism to save Syriac Christianity from the twin threats of political violence in the Middle East and cultural assimilation in Europe. \nIn a historical moment when much of their tradition has been forgotten or destroyed\, their story of self-discovery is one of survival and reinvention. By reviving the late antique Syriac litur­gical tradition known as the Daughters and Sons of the Covenant\, these groups seek a complex form of recognition for what they understand to be the ethical core of Christian kinship in an ethnic and a religious sense\, despite living in societies that do not recognize this unhyphenated form of ethno religiosity as a politically legitimate mode of public identity. \nDrawing on both theological and linguistic understandings of the icon\, Sonic Icons rethinks foundational theoretical accounts of ethnicization\, racialization\, and secularization. \nOrthodox Studies Center events are free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:This talk examines the various depictions of Jerusalem through different poetic traditions and historical periods\, exploring how poets from diverse backgrounds have captured the city’s spiritual significance and political symbolism. Focusing primarily on Mahmoud Darwish’s “In Jerusalem” (2005) and Yehuda Amichai’s “Jerusalem\,” (1992)\, the talk examines how each poet\, from different cultural and historical contexts\, captures the city’s complex combination of spiritual significance and political symbolism. Amichai uses everyday imagery\, like laundry and flags\, to portray Jerusalem as a place of human interaction and shared struggles\, emphasizing the tangible experience of coexistence and division. In contrast\, Darwish’s portrayal is mystical and transcendent\, expressing a sense of spiritual transformation and longing within the city’s sacred space. Through these perspectives\, the talk highlights how Jerusalem is not only a physical location but also a powerful symbol shaped by human dreams and conflicts\, embodying current questions about history and identity. \nThis event is co-presented by Fordham’s Arabic Language Program and the Center for Jewish Studies. Seen as a personal enemy of Vladimir Putin\, Navalny’s unshakable commitment to justice and democracy came at the highest cost\, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire people worldwide. \nDrawing inspiration from Alexei Navalny’s recent book Patriot\, which offers reflections from his final months in court and prison\, this event will explore the profound role of his Christian faith in sustaining his courage and hope. Even amidst unimaginable oppression\, his faith served as a wellspring of resilience and strength. \nOur distinguished speakers include Vladimir Kara-Murza\, a prominent Russian dissident and human rights advocate who himself endured imprisonment and continues to champion democracy\, and Serge Schmemann\, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and member of The New York Times editorial board.
