He was Co-Editor of the “Journal of the European Economic Association” between January 2019 and December 2023\, and in the Editorial Board of several Academic Journals in Economics. \nEdward Alden is senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)\, specializing in U.S. economic competitiveness\, trade\, and immigration policy. His latest book is When the World Closed Its Doors: The Covid-19 Tragedy and the Future of Borders\, co-authored with Laurie Trautman\, where they argue that even as states are increasingly resorting to border restrictions\, they are inadequate for addressing pandemics\, drugs\, migration and other external challenges.

We will look at these actions through the experience and expertise of Catholic sisters serving the poor around the globe and the work of Catholic Relief Services\, which offers life-saving humanitarian assistance in almost 100 nations. \nSr. Eneless Chimbali\, SBVM is a member of the servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Blantyre\, Malawi and a senior program officer for all Africa Conference : Sister to Sister. She serves on the board of Catholic Relief Services. \nSr. Florence Muia\, ASN is a member of the Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Nairobi and the founder of Upendo village\, a facility in Kenya\, designed to support people living with HIV in low-income communities around Nairobi. \nBill O’Keefe is the executive vice president for mission and mobilization at CRS\, where he overseees CRS effortd to change US foreign policy in ways that promote justice and reduce poverty overseas. \nSr. Dee Smith\, M.M is a maryknoll sister and one of the founders of Proyecto Vida\, an HIV/SIDA education\, prevention and treatment effort in Guatemala.

DESCRIPTION:Third Annual Fall Symposium \nFrom Tokyo Rose to the China Initiative: \nEspionage and AAPIs \nThursday\, November 14\, 2024 \nIn-Person and Online \nCostantino Room\nFordham Law School \nAgenda\n5:30 – 6 p.m. Check-in\n6 – 7:30 p.m. Program\n7:30 – 8:30 p.m. Reception \nAsian Americans have long been accused of spying for foreign countries and engaging in acts of treason. In 1949\, for example\, Iva Toguri D’Aquino was tried for treason in San Francisco—as the infamous “Tokyo Rose.” Years later\, she was pardoned. \nHalf a century later\, Dr. Wen Ho Lee\, a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory\, was accused of stealing U.S. nuclear secrets for China. Although he eventually pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor\, the sentencing judge apologized to him on behalf of the United States. \nAnd more recently\, the U.S. Government’s “China Initiative” targeted academics and scientists\, bringing indictments with great fanfare\, only to see many of the charges dropped\, dismissed\, or drastically reduced. \nThe Third Annual Fall Symposium of the Center on Asian Americans and the Law at Fordham Law School will explore issues presented by the Government’s prosecution over the years of Asian Americans for espionage and treason. We will first examine several historic cases and follow with a panel discussion on the Government’s more recent actions.
