SUMMARY:Touching the Face of the Cosmos Conference
DESCRIPTION:“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet” —Stephen Hawking (1942–2018) \nJoin us for this one-day series of panels\, presentations\, and papers that explore a missing ingredient in the attempt of humanity to lift itself off this planet and explore the universe. This ingredient both precedes and exceeds science\, and is not about making money or attaining military superiority. It is called sense of wonder\, spirituality\, or religion—the urge of every human being to know what we are doing in this universe. \nThe anthology Touching the Face of the Cosmos: On the Intersection of Space Travel and Religion\, edited by Paul Levinson and Michael Waltemathe (ebook Connected Editions\, paperback and hardcover Fordham University Press\, 2015)\, assembled a group of essays and short stories exploring this issue by leading thinkers and writers\, including one of the last interviews with John Glenn. Our conference continues this exploration. \nSchedule \n2 – 3:45 p.m. | Panels: The Intersection of Space Travel and Religion\nThe Missing Spirit\nPaul Levinson\nFordham University \nOpening the Gates of Heaven: Religious and Philosophical Implications of Space Travel\nMichael Waltemathe\nRuhr-Universität Bochum\, Germany\n \nIn Search of the Meaning of the Meaning of Life: Space Travel as Communication\nAleksandar Bogdanic\nUniversity of Banja Luka\, Bosnia \nCivilization\, Culture\, and the New Frontier\nJames Heiser\nBishop\, Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America\n\n4 – 5:15 p.m. | Science Fiction Looks at Space Travel and Religion\nPaul Levinson\, Alex Shvartsman\, and David Walton\nAuthors\nScience fiction is the only kind of fiction that delves into the quintessentially human characteristic of actively shaping and attempting to improve our future in this universe. Three science fiction authors will look at what science fiction shows us about the role of religion in moving humans off this planet into the cosmos. \n5:30 p.m. | Plenary Session: What Little Children See in Space\nMolly Vozick-Levinson and Brittany Miller\nThe Children’s Learning Center\, New York City  \n7 p.m. | Keynote Address: Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial?\nGuy Consolmagno\, S.J. (AKA The Pope’s Astronomer)\nDirector of the Vatican Observatory \n7:45 p.m. | Book Signing \nThis event is sponsored by the Department of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University. \nFREE ADMISSION

SUMMARY:Inside Out: Dress and Identity in the Middle Ages
DESCRIPTION:38th Annual Conference\, Center for Medieval Studies\nDress was a primary expression of identity in the European middle ages\, when individuals made strategic choices about clothing and bodily adornment (including hairstyle\, jewelry\, and other accessories) in order to communicate gender\, ethnicity\, status\, occupation\, and other personal and group identities. Because outward appearances were often interpreted as a reliable reflection of inner selves\, medieval dress\, in its material embodiment as well as in literary and artistic representations\, carried extraordinary moral and social meaning\, as well as offering seductive possibilities for self-presentation. \nThis conference aims to bring together recent research on the material culture and social meanings of dress in the Middle Ages to explore the following or related questions: \n\nGiven that very little actual clothing survives from the Middle Ages\, how does our reliance on artistic\, documentary\, and literary representations affect the study of dress and its meaning?\nWhat aspects of medieval dress were most effective in communicating identity and what messages did they send? What strategies were served by dress\, either embodied or in representation?\nHow did religious\, cultural\, and economic factors\, such as cross-cultural contact and trade and/or technology influence dress and its uses?\nDid ‘fashion’ or the so-called ‘Western fashion system’ actually begin in the Middle Ages? If so\, what social and cultural changes did it inspire or reflect?

SUMMARY:Humanitarian Blockchain Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Humanitarian Blockchain Summit will bring technology experts\, scholars\, and humanitarian practitioners together for dynamic discussions about the future of blockchain technology in humanitarian operations and in pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. \nBlockchain technology holds great potential for improving these operations—whether it’s used to transfer cash to disaster victims\, coordinate the delivery of supplies\, streamline humanitarian financing\, or make humanitarian projects more gender-inclusive. \nThe summit is designed for those interested in using blockchain for tangible humanitarian impact. Breakout sessions will focus on overcoming challenges to using blockchain\, as well as identifying the best ways to develop humanitarian-friendly blockchain platforms\, among other topics. The sessions will also include collaborative exercises and presentations about how some organizations are using blockchain. \nThe goal of the event is for participants to recommend policies for using blockchain in specific humanitarian interventions.
