SUMMARY:Antigonick
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a contemporary woman translates and adapts an ancient woman’s defiance of rigid state power? Anne Carson’s audacious rendering of Sophokles’ classic gives fresh meaning to the term iconoclastic.

SUMMARY:Duo Cantabile: Musical Landscapes for Violin and Piano
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Claudia Schaer and pianist Helen Lin will return to the National Opera Center after last year’s packed-house concert with an evening of vividly evocative recent music\, including the world premiere of a composition by Lawrence Kramer\, Ph.D.\, Distinguished Professor at Fordham University. \nThe program will explore the power of music to conjure up feelings of place and space\, from John Adams’ depiction of the quintessentially American open road\, to Matthew Peterson’s portrait of a spirit-haunted stream\, to Kramer’s evocations of landscapes enlivened by cloud shadows and light on water. The evening will conclude by turning back the clock to Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s festive take on a Shakespeare comedy. \nFree admission. Donations welcome.

SUMMARY:100 Photography Alumni
DESCRIPTION:The current exhibition in Fordham University’s Lipani Gallery features 100 photography alumni from across twenty years. Each photographer was asked to submit four images of their choice\, which were produced as postcards. This deck of cards was shuffled and the images installed from left to right\, repeatedly circling the gallery. The random image sequence has created interesting juxtapositions of content\, geography\, and era. \nThis event was organized by Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock. \nThis exhibition runs from May 31\, 2018 to September 14\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Faculty Spotlight 2018: Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock\, Anibal Pella-Woo\, and Mark Street
DESCRIPTION:The current display of works in Fordham University’s Ildiko Butler Gallery is the 2018 installment of the annual Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. Each spring\, three members from the Department of Theater and Visual Art are asked to share a sampling of their production with the Fordham community. Mark Street represents the film/video concentration; the photography concentration is represented by both Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock and Anibal Pella-Woo. Despite the differences in their mediums and approaches\, their works generate a lively dialogue around narrative strategies\, presentation of history\, and representational methods. \nThis exhibition runs from June 4\, 2018 to September 14\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Aurora Fra Bergen\, or\, Ibsanity: The Third Play in the 2017–2018 MainStage Season—A Season of the American Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Aurora fra Bergen\, or\, Ibsanity by Nina Morrison is a contemporary\, queer\, absurd riff on Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea. Morrison’s hilarious take on this rarely produced Ibsen drama questions our modern conventions of love and marriage. How do you choose between stability and passion? How do you recover from an all-consuming heartbreak\, especially when you have to go to work the next day? \nIbsanity had a workshop production at the University of Iowa\, and the Fordham production is the New York premiere. Performed by an incredibly talented ensemble of students and supported by a professional design team\, this production is 72 minutes of absurd comedy with a meta-theatrical flair and deep heart.

SUMMARY:Join us for the journey of "The Way West"
DESCRIPTION:“The Way West” is the second play in the 2017-2018 Mainstage Season: A Season of the American Landscape. \n“The Way West“\nby Mona Mansour\nDirected by Caroline Wood \nPERFORMANCES\nNovember 8-10\, 16-18\, Pope Auditorium\nAll performances begin at 8:00 PM. \nEVENTS\nOpening Night: Join us for our opening night party\, on 11/8\, immediately following the performance. \nTalkback: Please join the cast\, the creative/production team for a talkback immediately following Friday\, 11/17’s performance. \nFrom the Production:\nStories have a funny way of crafting our actions and beliefs\, often more than we realize. As Americans\, the rhetoric that if we think smart and work hard\, good things will inherently come\, is as ingrained in our DNA as apple pie and football on Sunday nights. \nAmerican mythology revolves around the ‘can do’ spirit\, and the persistence of a people that always wanted more. “Why not me?” became the battle cry of generations and the country built itself upon the reputation of the American Dream. In her work\, Mona Mansour parallels a family plunging forward\, while on the precipice of financial collapse\, with the brazen pioneers that roamed the American countryside some 200 years before in search of their own American Dream… \nThe romanticism and immortalization of the pioneer grit in Mom’s stories (in the play) have become their own means of sustenance. They feed her beliefs and her unrelenting optimism\, fully endorsed by a version of American history that was heavily edited. \nAs we all know\, history tends to repeat itself leaving mom and her family to relive the harrowing experience of the determined pioneers who learned the hard way that big dreams and good intentions do not always lead to gold. This play makes us examine where we come from\, what we feel entitled to\, and the stories that inform who we are as Americans. \nRESERVATIONS\nEmail: fclcboxoffice@gmail.com\nPhone: 212-636-6340\nBox Office Hours: Monday-Friday\, 1-5:30pm\, and 1 hour before the performance.\nWhen emailing or leaving a message\, please provide your name\, the date of the show you wish to attend\, and the number and type of desired tickets. \nTICKET PRICES\n*CASH ONLY*\nGeneral Admission: $15\nFordham Faculty\, Alumni\, Staff: $10\nStudents* and Senior Citizens: $5\nFordham Theater Majors/Minors: FREE\n*must have valid I.D. \nLOCATION\nPope Auditorium\nFordham University At Lincoln Center\n113 West 60th St.\nNew York NY 10023\n(Take the ABCD or 1 to Columbus Circle)

SUMMARY:Leave Me Alone With the Recipes: The Life\, Art and Cookbook of Cipe Pineles
DESCRIPTION:October 17-January 21\nOpening reception and book signing with editors Sarah Rich and Wendy \nMacNaughton:\nTuesday\, October 17\, 2017 6-8pm\nCurators: Wendy MacNaughton and Sarah Rich Exhibition Advisor: Debbie Millman\nExhibition Coordinator: Abby Goldstein \nBehind every celebrated work of art\, there are innumerable others that never see the light of day. Such was the case with the hand-painted cookbook of Cipe Pineles\, which sat unopened for decades a er her death until it landed at an antique book fair\, where an artist and an editor spo ed its breathtaking contents and gave it a spotlight in the new book\, Leave Me Alone With the Recipes: The Life\, Art and Cookbook of Cipe Pineles (Bloomsbury\, 2017). \nPineles was a 20th-century art director and graphic designer whose in uence has touched generations\, though few people know her name. In the 1940s\, as the rst female art director at Conde Nast\, Pineles helped launch Seventeen Magazine\, and in doing so\, created an entirely new media category dedicated to young women. She was the rst to hire ne artists for magazine illustration\, among them Andy Warhol\, who once called her his favorite art director. \nConcurrently in 1945\, Pineles was privately painting her mother’s Eastern European Jewish recipes in vibrant gouache on the pages of a sketchbook she kept at home. Borscht\, roast chicken\, goulash and kugel accompany stunning\, hand-lettered instructions—a handmade cookbook that never reached publication\, until now. \nFordham University is pleased to present Cipe Pineles: Leave Me Alone With the Recipes\, an exhibition of selected works from the new book\, along with archival materials that take the viewer along on the process of publication design and art direction under one of the great creative minds of the time. Join us in celebrating Cipe—a woman\, an immigrant\, a hidden gure in the history of design.\nLeave Me Alone with the Recipes will available for purchase at the opening reception. | cipepineles.com Hors d’oeuvres by Russ & Daughters.

SUMMARY:An Opening of an Exhibition of Photography: Chuck Fishman: Roots\, Resilience and Renewal—A Portrait of Polish Jews\, 1975–2016
DESCRIPTION:Fordham University’s Jewish Studies and Derfner Judaica Museum + The Art Collection at Hebrew Home at Riverdale are pleased to announce its latest exhibition\, Chuck Fishman: Roots\, Resilience and Renewal—A Portrait of Polish Jews\, 1975–2016\, on view at the Derfner Judaica Museum from September 17\, 2017–January 7\, 2018. A reception and talk by the photographer will take place on Sunday\, September 17\, from 1:30–3 p.m. \nThis event is free and open to the public. R.S.V.P. 718.581.1596 or art@hebrewhome.org. Photo I.D. required for admission. \nThe exhibition includes 36 black and white photographs made during multiple trips Fishman took to Poland over a period of more than 40 years\, first as a young college student and later as a professional photojournalist. He first traveled to Poland in the summer of 1975 during the Communist era\, accompanied by a writer\, in search of what remained of Jewish life and culture in a country that Jews had inhabited for 1000 years\, a once-vibrant community whose history and legacy lay on the brink of extinction. \nWhat Fishman found were synagogues\, locked\, decaying and/or abandoned\, and cemeteries in ruin; older Jews\, living on pensions\, by and large “underground” and with scant communal resources: the “kosher kitchens” in Warsaw\, Krakow and Wroclaw; a Jewish club in Lodz; Friday night or Shabbat services in Warsaw and Krakow\, and the Yiddish theater in Warsaw. That first journey resulted in the publication of Polish Jews: The Final Chapter (McGraw-Hill and New York University Press\, 1977). Returning several times between 1975 and 1983\, Fishman’s images provide rare glimpses into Jewish life during a period when Jews in the West had little or no access to their Polish forebears in the post-Holocaust era. His more recent images\, made 30 years later upon his arrival in 2013—more than two decades after the fall of Communism—chronicle a spiritual and cultural “return to identity” that Fishman says\, “would have been unthinkable before.” His latest work speaks “to themes of resilience and renewal\, exploring and elucidating the myriad faces and facets of recovery and re-generation\,” he explains\, as younger generations are discovering their Jewish roots\, and what it means “being Jewish.” \nThis jointly organized exhibition is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. \nAdditional funding provided by Joseph Alexander Foundation\, the Jan Karski Educational Foundation\, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. \nFor more information\, contact Magda Teter\, The Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies at 347-364-3472 or JewishStudies@fordham.edu.
