From the Production:
Stories have a funny way of crafting our actions and beliefs, often more than we realize. As Americans, the rhetoric that if we think smart and work hard, good things will inherently come, is as ingrained in our DNA as apple pie and football on Sunday nights.

American mythology revolves around the ‘can do’ spirit, and the persistence of a people that always wanted more. “Why not me?” became the battle cry of generations and the country built itself upon the reputation of the American Dream. In her work, Mona Mansour parallels a family plunging forward, while on the precipice of financial collapse, with the brazen pioneers that roamed the American countryside some 200 years before in search of their own American Dream…

The romanticism and immortalization of the pioneer grit in Mom’s stories (in the play) have become their own means of sustenance. They feed her beliefs and her unrelenting optimism, fully endorsed by a version of American history that was heavily edited.

As we all know, history tends to repeat itself leaving mom and her family to relive the harrowing experience of the determined pioneers who learned the hard way that big dreams and good intentions do not always lead to gold. This play makes us examine where we come from, what we feel entitled to, and the stories that inform who we are as Americans.
