Two Fordham University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences students, both majoring in International Political Economy and Development (IPED), have been awarded Wings of Excellence by the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

The awards will enable first-year graduate students Leilanee Olaño and Andra Tomsa to participate in theSt. Gallen Symposium in May.

“The St. Gallen Symposium is the world’s leading platform for dialogue on key issues in management, the entrepreneurial environment and the interfaces between business, politics and civil society,” said Henry Schwalbenberg, Ph.D., associate professor of economics and director of IPED.

The topic for this year’s symposium at St. Gallen is “Just Power: Aligning to the New Economic Order.” Olaño, a Filipino citizen specializing in international banking and finance, was chosen on the basis of her essay on the importance of servant leadership. Tomsa, a Greek citizen specializing in international economics, was chosen on the basis of her essay on the need to set a maximum international wage.

The St. Gallen conference has been assembling a global target group of entrepreneurs, students, managers, academics and politicians for more than 40 years. This year’s 41st symposium will break down “power” into five topical clusters ranging from issues such as politics and arms, money and ownership, voice, leadership and values and ideas.
