TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — Careful study of outdoor motifs in the landscapes of places as diverse as New England and Provence unites the works of eight distinguished women artists featured in an exhibition titled “Working from Nature: Violet Baxter, Nell Blaine, Gretna Campbell, Lois Dodd, Jane Freilicher, Loren MacIver, Ruth Miller and Sylvia Plimack Mangold,” on display April 1 through April 29 in Butler Gallery, Butler Hall, Marymount College of Fordham University. A gallery reception will take place April 2, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
“Working from Nature” will include drawings, pastels, watercolors and paintings that provide insights into the artists’ approaches to their subjects. The artists have received numerous honors and share distinguished exhibition and teaching records. Their works can be found in major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum and the National Gallery of Art.
“These painters transform everyday subjects—such as rocks, bodies of water, trees, buildings and fields—into evocative poetic statements,” said David Holt, professor of art and gallery coordinator at Marymount College of Fordham University. “Their works are orchestrated with intelligence, sensitivity and depth of emotion.”
