Undergraduate business students who want to treat the entire globe as their stage will have an option do so in the fall of 2014, as the Gabelli School of Business unveils a new bachelor’s degree in global business.

global-businessThe degree will feature four concentrations:

• Digital media and technology;

• Global finance and business economics;

• Management with a focus on health care; and

• Marketing with a focus on consumer insight.

The new degree will be housed at the Lincoln Center campus—another first for the college.

Donna Rapaccioli, Ph.D., dean of the Gabelli School, said the degree was born out of a desire to capitalize on Fordham’s presence in New York City, the strength of its faculty, and employment opportunities that New York-based employers have said exist.

The initial class of 50 students will be required to study abroad and hold an internship, and will be encouraged to learn an additional language—something presently not part of the core curriculum.

“We wanted to keep strong our belief that liberal arts education is at the root of what we’re doing. So when you look at the concentrations we’ve chosen, you’ll see they all pair up with one or more liberal arts disciplines,” she said.

For example, students who choose the marketing concentration will delve into psychology and anthropology classes. Global finance concentrators will seek out history and economics coursework. Students in the management and health care concentration may mix economics and the sciences.

“The students will have the same liberal arts core, and they’ll also be involved in the new integrated business core, but it’s going to have more of a global feel,” Rapaccioli said. “We’ll use more companies based outside the United States as our platform.”
