The Associated Collegiate Press presented a second-place Best-in-Show award to The Observer, the student-run newspaper at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus, during the National College Newspaper Convention in San Francisco Feb. 24 through 27. The award recognized overall excellence for the paper’s Nov. 18, 2004 edition.
“This is an all-around competition, and a stiff one at that, which means the paper was judged generally excellent,” said Anahid Kassabian, Ph.D., interim advisor of The Observer. “This year’s editorial staff is extraordinary … and the prize is very well-earned.”
Corinne Iozzio, editor in chief, added, “This award is a testament to the hard work of the entire Observer staff. I hope that we will continue to push ourselves to even greater achievements in the future.”
The Observer received the award in the category of “four-year colleges: less than weekly.” It is the third award for the paper in the past year. In April 2004, it won awards for editorial content and photography from the New York Press Association.
In 2004, The Observer expanded its circulation to include Fordham’s Rose Hill campus in the Bronx, making it available to more than 14,000 students. In Jan. 2006, the paper will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
